US Joins 90-odd Nation Coalition to Protect 30% Earth by 2030

The US officially announced to join the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People, a group of more than 90 countries, encouraging the adoption of the global goal to protect and conserve at least 30 per cent of the planet -- land and sea -- by 2030, commonly referred to as "30x30."
Scientists have issued repeated warnings that nature is in a state of crisis, threatened by habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change.
The announcement follows the Biden administration's launch this week of a $1 billion program, called the America the Beautiful Challenge, to advance its national 30x30 goal.

After Hyderabad, Mumbai Recognised As A 'Tree City Of The World'

Mumbai was recognised as '2021 Tree City of the World' by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (UN) jointly with Arbor Day Foundation.
Mumbai received recognition for its "commitment to growing and maintaining urban trees and greenery in building healthy, resilient and happy cities.
The United Nations' 'Tree City of the World' programme provides direction, assistance, and worldwide recognition for communities' dedication to its urban forest, and provides a framework for a healthy, sustainable urban forestry.
Meanwhile, tree activists expressed surprise over Mumbai bagging the 'Tree City of the World' tag as it has lost significant green cover in the last few years.

First Ever NTCA Meeting Outside National Capital Held at Arunachal Pradesh

The 20th Meeting of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held in Pakke tiger reserve in Arunachal Pradesh under the chairmanship of Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav.
For the first time in history the NTCA meeting happened outside the national capital. In order to get first hand information about reserve, local issues etc. the Union Minister had directed that henceforth these meetings will be held outside Delhi in forest areas or in tiger reserves.
On the occasion around 100 air guns were surrendered by the local villagers. Rampant use of Air gun was a problem in north eastern states. Arunachal Pradesh in March 2021, had started the Air Gun Surrender Abhiyaan which has so far yielded great results.
India harbors about 70% of the world's tiger population in wild. The tigers occupy different landscapes in the country. While some landscapes have rich and viable populations in accordance with the habitat and prey-base, there are some habitats that are under occupied for various regions but have potential to support better tiger population.

India Needs $12.4 Trillion for Net-zero Transition

India will need investments worth $12.4 trillion, nearly half of US GDP, from developed nations and investors to help its economy transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, says a report
Without capital inflows and grants from the developed world, emerging economies including India's will see household consumption fall by 5% on average each year, according to a study by Standard Chartered Plc.
Eight emerging markets -- India, China, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, UAE, Nigeria and South Africa -- will together need $94.8 trillion in transition finance from developed markets if they are to meet climate goals without affecting their citizens' cost of living, the report said. China alone will need $35.1 trillion, the calculations show.

Union Environment Minister Launches Awareness Mascot 'Prakriti'& Green Initiatives for Effective ...

The Union Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav launched 'Prakriti', a mascotto spread greater awareness among masses about small changes that can be sustainably adopt in our lifestyle for a better environment, and various green initiatives taken by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to ensure effective Plastic Waste Management (PWM) in the country.
To tackle the challenge of plastic pollution, the Prime Minister,Shri Narendra Modi announced India's pledge to phase out Single Use Plastics (SUPs) by 2022. Taking the momentum forward and stressing on the need for active public participation, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Changealso administered 'Swachh Bharat Harit Bharat Green Pledge' to the gathering.
Plastic has become one of the most pressing environmental issues that we are facing today. India is generating about 3.5 Million Tonnes of plastic waste annually and the per capita plastic waste generation has almost doubled over the last five years. Plastic Pollution adversely affects our ecosystems and is also linked to air pollution.

99% World's Population Breathes Poor-quality Air: World Health Organisation

As per the UN health agency, nearly everybody in the world breathes air that doesn't meet its standards for air quality, calling for more action to reduce fossil-fuel use, which generates pollutants that cause respiratory and blood-flow problems and lead to millions of preventable deaths each year.
The World Health Organisation, about six months after tightening its guidelines on air quality, issued an update to its database on air quality that draws on information from a growing number of cities, towns, and villages across the globe now totaling over 6,000 municipalities.
WHO said that 99 per cent of the global population breathes air that exceeds its air-quality limits and is often rife with particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the veins and arteries, and cause disease. Air quality is poorest in WHO's Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asia regions, followed by Africa.
