Indian-Americans Feature in TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI 2024

TIME Magazine unveiled its prestigious 'TIME100 Most Influential People in AI 2024' list, showcasing the individuals who are shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
This year's (2024) list proudly features several Indian-American innovators and leaders who are making significant contributions to the field. Among the notable names are Sundar Pichai, the visionary CEO of Google and Alphabet; Satya Nadella, the pioneering CEO of Microsoft; Rohit Prasad, the SVP and head scientist of Artificial General Intelligence at Amazon; and many more.

French President Macron Appoints Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier as New Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Michel Barnier, the European Union's former Brexit negotiator, as his new Prime Minister, in a bid to put an end to political paralysis following an inconclusive snap election.
The leftwing alliance that won June's election accused Macron of ignoring the result by picking a conservative. It called for demonstrations against Barnier's selection but did not have enough seats to block the choice on its own.
The far-right National Rally (RN), parliament's biggest single party, indicated it would not block Barnier for now, but could do so later if a range of demands were not met.
At 73, Barnier is the oldest Prime Minister in France's modern political history, taking over from Gabriel Attal, who was the youngest.

UAE Unveils 2025 Vision: Enhancing Families, Identity, and AI Development

In a crucial move to shape the future of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has announced a nationwide action plan for 2025. This ambitious plan focuses on three pivotal areas: strengthening the family unit, promoting Emirati identity, and driving advances in artificial intelligence.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasised the importance of these three key priorities. He called on all parties to contribute to shaping the country's strategies in these sectors for the year ahead.

Dhulikhel Becomes Nepal's First 'Healthy City' and Second Healthiest City in Asia: WHO

WHO declared Dhulikhel Municipality of Kavrepalanchok district as Nepal's first 'healthy city' and second healthiest city in Asia. Since 2014, Dhulikhel Municipality has implemented various programmes to achieve the status.
Dhulikhel Municipality, which initiated a campaign to become a healthy city, has been monitored by the World Health Organisation since 2021 to achieve the feat of becoming Nepal's healthiest city. Dhulikhel scored 65.48 points on various indicators for healthy cities, joining the WHO Healthy City Network.
The evaluations were made on various indicators, including citizens' access to health, their participation in health policy-making, political commitment to health, nutrition, child health and innovative health initiatives such as tuberculosis-free and nutrition-friendly programmes, among others. The municipality is awarded USD 5,000 for implementing various programmes under the Healthy City initiative.

UN Allocates $100 Million for Humanitarian Crises in 10 Countries

The United Nations allocated $100 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to address critical humanitarian needs in 10 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean. Acting UN humanitarian chief Joyce Msuya emphasised the dire need for this funding, noting that a lack of resources is hindering aid agencies from providing essential life-saving assistance.
Yemen ($20 Million) and Ethiopia ($15 Million): These countries are receiving over one-third of the total funding. Yemen is in its 10th year of civil war, while Ethiopia faces internal conflicts and ethnic insurgencies.
Myanmar ($12 Million), Mali ($11 Million), Burkina Faso ($10 Million), Haiti ($9 Million), Cameroon ($7 Million), and Mozambique ($7 Million): Funds are designated for humanitarian operations in these regions plagued by long-term conflict and climate-related issues.
Burundi ($5 Million) and Malawi ($4 Million): These countries are experiencing severe food insecurity due to El Niño-induced drought and flooding.

Pakistan Invites PM Modi for SCO Meet in Islamabad

Pakistan invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Council of Heads of Government meeting to be held in Islamabad in October.
Pakistan holds the rotating chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) and in that capacity, will be hosting the two-day in-person SCO Heads of Governments Meeting on October 15-16.
The SCO, comprising India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, is an influential economic and security bloc that has emerged as one of the largest trans-regional international organisations.
