  • India reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready digital development during the 11th BRICS Communications Ministers Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil. Representing the Government of India, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, delivered the country's statement, aligning India's priorities with the overarching theme set by Brazil's BRICS presidency: Universal and Meaningful Connectivity, Space Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, and the Digital Ecosystem.
  • He called upon BRICS nations to deepen collaboration in harnessing digital public infrastructure to drive inclusive growth and build resilient digital economies. He underscored that India's DPI model—built on open, interoperable platforms—serves as a catalyst for financial inclusion, good governance, and digital innovation, while also guarding against monopolistic practices.

Lee Jae-myung Elected South Korean President

  • South Korea elected Lee Jae-Myung as its new President after a snap election held just six months after the country faced one of its most turbulent political periods. His conservative opponent, Kim Moon-soo of the People Power Party, conceded defeat and congratulated Lee.
  • Speaking to supporters in Seoul, Lee expressed gratitude and promised to push for peaceful dialogue with North Korea. He also committed to preventing future military interventions.

Annalena Baerbock Elected President of 80th UN General Assembly Session

  • Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was elected as the President of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Her election marked a significant moment in UN history as she became the first woman from the Western European group to assume the post and the fifth woman overall to lead the UNGA. Baerbock took over at a time when global governance faces multiple crises ranging from geopolitical conflicts to sustainable development setbacks.

Mongolia PM Resigns after Losing Confidence Vote

  • Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene resigned after losing a confidence vote in parliament.
  • The vote followed days of mass protests over corruption allegations - fuelled by social media posts about his son's lavish birthday party and engagement.
  • Oyun-Erdene, who took office in 2021, will remain as caretaker PM until a successor is appointed within 30 days.

Karol Nawrocki Elected Polands New President

  • Conservative Karol Nawrocki won Poland's presidential election, winning 50.89% of the vote over liberal Warsaw Mayor RafaƂ Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw, who got 49.11%. Nawrocki will succeed Andrzej Duda as Poland's President when Duda's second term concludes on August 6.
  • Although Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a former head of the European Council elected by parliament, holds most of the day-to-day power in Poland's political system, the President plays a significant role, wielding influence over foreign policy and holding veto power over legislation. With the President and government belonging to different parties, Poland will remain a bitterly divided country operating between two power centres.

PM Modi Unlikely to Attend G7 Summit in Canada

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to visit Canada for the upcoming G7 summit amid frosty ties between Ottawa and New Delhi. G7 is an informal grouping of the most industrialised economies in the world -- France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and Canada. It is also attended by the European Union (EU), IMF, World Bank and the United Nations are also invited.
  • India is yet to receive any official invitation for the summit, which is being hosted by Canada from June 15-17, nor is the Indian side inclined to attend, said sources, adding that the relationship must improve before any such high-profile visit takes place.

Banka Re-elected for Third and Final Term as WADA President

  • Witold Banka was re-elected for a third and final three-year term as president of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
  • The third term for Banka, a former middle-distance runner, will begin in January 2026 and run until the end of 2028. WADA vice president Yang Yang was also re-elected for a third and final three-year term.

  • An archaeological site in Assam's Dima Hasao district, uncovered but damaged during the construction of an arterial road in the 1960s, has yielded artefacts that establish it as a Neolithic habitation zone dating back to more than 2,700 years.
  • The discovery of a furnace and iron slag, indicating metallurgical activities, has provided "substantial support" for earlier hypotheses that Daojali Hading was a major prehistoric settlement in the northeastern part of India.
