US House Passes Quad Bill

  • The US House of Representatives passed the Quad bill, aiming to enhance collaboration among the United States, Australia, India, and Japan. This legislative move signifies a significant step toward fostering closer ties and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The Quad bill directs the Biden administration to establish a Quad Intra-Parliamentary Working Group to facilitate closer cooperation among the four nations.
  • This group will serve as a platform for strategic discussions and coordination on various regional and global issues.
  • The bill was passed by a roll call vote of 379 to 39 votes.
  • Within 180 days of the bill's enactment, the State Department is required to submit a strategy to Congress outlining plans to increase engagement and cooperation within the Quad. This strategy will address key areas such as pandemic preparedness, technological innovation, and economic integration.
  • The bill also established a US group, comprising a maximum of 24 members of Congress, to represent the United States in the Quad Intra-Parliamentary Working Group. Guidelines for annual meetings and group leadership are also outlined to ensure effective coordination and communication.

India-Poland Sign Pact for Issuing Summons, Search Warrant, Taking Evidence of Witnesses

  • India signed an agreement with Poland for issuing summons, search warrant to any person or taking the evidence of witnesses residing in either country in relation to criminal matters.
  • In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (ii) of Sub-section (1) of Section 105 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (2 of 1974), the central government hereby specifies that – a summon to an accused person; or a summon to any person requiring him to attend and produce a document or other thing, or to produce it; or a search-warrant, may be issued by a court in India in duplicate to the court, Judge or Magistrate in the government of the Republic of Poland having authority under the law for the time being in force in that country, through the competent authority, that is, the Minister of Justice or the Prosecutor General or a person who he or she authorises of the government of Republic of Poland to serve such summons or execute such warrant on the person or place named therein.
  • The home ministry said the concerned court, judge or magistrate in India, while issuing summons are required to comply with the comprehensive guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019 in this regard.

Stubb Wins Finnish Presidential Election

  • Alexander Stubb of the centre-right National Coalition Party narrowly won Finland's presidential election, defeating liberal Green Party member Pekka Haavisto, who conceded defeat.
  • Stubb is pro-European and a strong supporter of Ukraine who has taken a tough stance towards Russia.
  • He declared himself winner in the run-off vote after securing 51.6% of the votes as 99.7% of ballots had been counted, against Haavisto's 48.4%, justice ministry data showed.

Miss World Pageant to Take Place in India

  • The much anticipated 71st edition of Miss World will be held in India from February 18 to March 9.
  • Miss World pageant, which will be held in India after nearly three decades, will attract participants from 120 countries. Festivities will begin on February 18, with early rounds in Delhi, leading up to the grand finale on March 9 in Mumbai. Miss World Organisation CEO Julia Morley expressed her deep affection for India.
