Faster, Higher, Stronger and Now 'Together', IOC Adds Fourth Olympic Motto

The Olympic motto was amended to "faster, higher, stronger - together" during the International Olympic Committee's session in Tokyo as the world waited for the pandemic-hit Games to begin on July 23.
The word "together" after a hyphen has been added to the earlier motto, which was made up of three Latin words -- Citius, Altius, Fortius, translating to "Faster Higher Stronger" in English.
The proposal to include the word together was made by IOC President Thomas Bach, which was endorsed by the body's Executive Board (EB) in April.
The motto now reads 'Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communis' in Latin.

Mongolia, Tajikistan and Switzerland New Members of ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) inducted Mongolia, Tajikistan and Switzerland as members at its 78th Annual General Meeting.
The meeting, which was conducted virtually, welcomed Mongolia and Tajikistan as the 22nd and 23rd members of the Asia region, while Switzerland is Europe's 35th member, with the ICC now comprising 106 members in total, including 94 associates.
The Mongolian Cricket Association (MCA) which was established in 2007 became the official national administrator of the sport in 2018.
Cricket was first played in Switzerland in 1817 and Cricket Switzerland (CS) was inaugurated as an association in 2014.

Viswanathan Anand Wins Sparkassen Trophy

In a battle between two former World champions fought over four games in a brand-new format of chess, Viswanathan Anand defeated Vladimir Kramnik to win the Sparkassen Trophy at Dortmund.
Kramnik, who conceived this variant of chess with the intention of making the game less predictable and more dynamic, however, was forced to draw the game by giving perpetual checks. Anand was just one move away from putting a second queen on the board.

Shibaji Banerjee to be Conferred with Mohun Bagan Ratna Posthumously

Former India and Mohun Bagan shot-stopper Shibaji Banerjee, who famously denied Brazil's legendary football player Pele from scoring a goal in an exhibition match in 1977, will be conferred with Mohun Bagan Ratna posthumously.
The friendly match against New York Cosmos at the iconic Eden Gardens ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Banerjee played more than one half of the game, in which he made at least five good saves. Apart from denying Pele the chance to score from a direct free kick, the Bagan goalkeeper also blocked Pele in a one-on-one situation, drawing massive cheers from the crowd.

Lewis Hamilton wins British Grand Prix 2021

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain), won the British Grand Prix 2021, for a record-extending eighth time.
The event was held on July 18, 2021, at the Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom.
This is the 99th career win of seven times world champion Hamilton and the fourth win of the current season after 10 races.
Monaco based Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) stood second. Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas from Finland, finished third.

Punjab Waives off of Rs 590 cr of Loans of Labourers, Landless Farmers

The Punjab government announced waiver of Rs 590 crore worth of loans under the farm debt waiver scheme for labourers and the landless farming community.
The cheques would be issued at a state-level function on August 20, 2021.
The Punjab government will pay off loans to the tune of Rs 520 crore of 2,85,325 members of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS), thus ensuring a relief of Rs 20,000 per member, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said.

India Heads to the Olympics, With a New 'Cheer Song'

India has never had an official OIympic song, and not much reason to have one either. Now there are two, and with good reason. India's largest contingent of athletes for an Olympics head to Tokyo with an unprecedented six athletes ranked No 1 in the world in their fields. They will go to the tune of Hindustani Way, launched on Wednesday as the "official cheer song" for the contingent.
Composed by AR Rahman and sung by Ananya Birla, the song features both Hindi and English lyrics. In typical Rahman fashion, it's heavy on rousing beats. "Ananya came to me and said let's do a song together. She was very excited. Her voice is great, her spirit is great. That's how Hindustani Way happened," Rahman said during the release of the song. The launch was an online event, where Anurag Thakur, the Union minister for youth affairs & sports, released the song.
