First Ever White Card Shown in a Football Match

  • Most football fans must be aware of the red and yellow cards in football. But history was scripted in Portugal when a white card was shown for the first time in a women's cup quarter-final match between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.
  • The card was initiated by Portugal to try and improve ethical value in the sport. It is in contrast with yellow and red cards which are used to discipline players for misconduct. The exact purpose and consequence of the card are yet to be announced.
  • During the match, a fan fell ill in the stands. The medical teams from both the teams rushed to the spot and the referee Catarina Campos showed the white card to them. It received a positive reception from the crowd at the Estadio da Luz, with many cheering and applauding the decision.
  • The card was shown as an appreciation to the medical teams for their spirit.

ICC Announces All-female Panel of Match Officials for Women's T20 World Cup

  • In a significant first for world cricket, the ICC named an all-female panel of match officials, including the Indian trio of G. S. Lakshmi, Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa.
  • Three match referees and 10 umpires make up the 13-woman team in what is a landmark moment and is in part of the ICC's strategic ambition of advancing the involvement and visibility of women in cricket. The panel includes seven first timers, and the announcement came after a constant rise in the number of women officiating in global tournaments.

SuryakumarYadav Becomes First Indian Men's player to Clinch T20I Player of the Year Award

  • India's star batsman SuryakumarYadavwas selected as the best T20 International Cricketer of the Year by the ICC. SuryakumarYadav has had a stellar year with the bat, where he broke several records and set records. SuryakumarYadav became the second batsman to score 1000 or more runs in a calendar year. He ended the year 2022 as the highest run-scorer. Surya scored 1164 runs at an excellent strike rate of 187.43.
  • The ICC said that the winner of the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year had one of the best years for any player in the history of the format.

Women's IPL Auction Attracts Rs. 4,670 crore in Winning Bids

  • The auction for five teams in the women's Indian Premier League, now called the Women's Premier League (WPL), concluded, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) walking home with nearly Rs. 4,670 crore, beating estimates of Rs. 4,000 crore. The auction of teams was for a 10-year period (2023-32).
  • The Adani Group entered the Indian cricketing arena with the highest bid of Rs. 1,289 crore for the Ahmedabad franchise, followed by the Reliance-backed Indiawin Sports, which bought the Mumbai franchise for Rs. 912.99 crore. The other three winners were Royal Challengers Sports for Bengaluru at Rs. 901 crore, JSW GMR Cricket for Delhi at Rs. 810 crore, and Capri Global for Lucknow at Rs. 757 crore.

India Becomes No.1 ODI Team

  • India became the No. 1 team in the ICC ODI rankings after defeating New Zealand by 90 runs in Indore, thereby clean sweeping the Kiwis 3-0 in the series. The Men in Blue had won the first match by 12 runs in Hyderabad and the second match by 8 wickets in Raipur. This was India's second consecutive clean sweep, having beaten Sri Lanka last week.

ICC Reveals Men's & Women's T20I Team of Year

  • The International Cricket Council Team of the Year recognises 11 outstanding individuals who have impressed one and all – be it with the bat, the ball or their all-round exploits in a calendar year. Indian players who made the cut in the shortest format of the gameare Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the men's team and in the woman's team were Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh.

Mary Kom to Lead Oversight Committee to Probe against WFI President

  • Boxing great MC Mary Kom was selected to lead a five-member Oversight Committee that will probe sexual harassment charges against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
  • The government-appointed Committee will also run the day-to-day affairs of WFI for the next one month.
  • The other members of the panel are Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director Radhika Sreeman.
  • Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had decided to form the Committee following a three-day sit-in protest by some of the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya against WFI and Singh.
