Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty Create History

  • The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty created scripted history as they became the first ever Indians to lift a Super 1000 title after winning the final of Indonesia Open 2023 badminton championship against Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
  • Satwik and Chirag, who are ranked sixth in the World, beat Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-17, 21-18 in the men's doubles final to claim their first ever Super 1000 title.
  • The Indian pair had earlier cruised into the final, defeating South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in three hard-fought games 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 in the first semi-finals.

K.M. Deeksha Clinches Gold in the 1,500m National Inter-state Athletics Championships

  • K.M. Deeksha upset 1,500m National record holder Harmilan Bains for the gold in the
  • National Inter-state Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium, Odisha.
  • Deeksha clocked 4:06.07 for her personal best. She led a pack of four athletes, including Chanda (4:09.39) and Pooja (4:09.52), who breached the Asian Games qualifying mark. Deeksha overtook Harmilan in the last 200m to rewrite the meet record.

First Women's Kabaddi League in Dubai

  • The inaugural edition of India's first-ever Women's Kabaddi League (WKL) commenced with great fanfare in Dubai.
  • This historic event marked the first time that women kabaddi players from across India were given the opportunity to exhibit their skills and prowess on a global stage. The league consists of eight teams, featuring a total of 96 players, each representing Indian states. These teams bear the names of various states, including the Delhi Dynamites, Gujarat Angels, Great Marathas, Haryana Hustlers, Punjab Panthers, Rajasthan Riders, Uma Kolkata, and Bengaluru Hawks.
  • The victorious team will be awarded a prize of approximately half a million dirhams (equivalent to 1 crore INR). The opening ceremony of the IPL-style women's kabaddi league was graced by the presence of Bollywood actor Govinda, who unveiled the coveted trophy. APS Sports, the primary organizer of the WKL, highlighted that this substantial reward exemplifies the league's commitment to acknowledging and appreciating the relentless efforts, dedication, and exceptional talent exhibited by these outstanding athletes.
  • The Women's Kabaddi League will conclude on June 27, at the Shabab Al Ahli Sports Club in Dubai. The league's overarching objective is to enhance the prominence of kabaddi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and empower female athletes from India. It provides a robust platform for these exceptional talents to exhibit their prowess, ultimately inspiring a new generation of kabaddi enthusiasts.

Egypt Wins World Squash Championship

  • Top-ranked Egypt defeated Malaysia 2-1 in the final to emerge champion in the SDAT WSF Squash World Cup in Chennai.
  • In a thrilling final, Egypt fought their way back from 1-0 down to win 2-1.
  • Second-seeded India finished joint third with Japan after losing to Malaysia in the semi-finals.
  • The World Cup was revived this year (2023) after last being held in 2011, in Chennai. It marked the first time that teams were fully gender balanced, with two men and two women competing for each side.

National Championship: Himachal's Seema Wins 10,000 m Gold

  • The top four finishers in the men's 10000 m race at the National Inter-State Championship breached the Asian Games qualifying mark. The qualifying time for the Asian Games is 29 minutes, 30 seconds. Uttar Pradesh's Kartik Kumar (29:01.84) and Gulveer Singh (29:03.78) won gold and silver, respectively, while Delhi's Pritam Kumar (29:22.36) and Madhya Pradesh's Harmanjot Singh (29:26.86) finished third and fourth, respectively. Chief national coach Radhakrishnan Nair said that the federation will pick the top-two as a country can send only two athletes per event. Himachal Pradesh's Seema stunned defending champion Maharashtra's Sanjivani Jadhav to win gold in the women's 10000 m race but failed to breach the Asian Games qualifying time. Seema, who had won gold at the National Games in 2022, clocked 34:20.01, while Jadhav clocked 34:34.10. The Asian Games qualifying time is 32:30.24.

First Janjatiya Khel Mahotsav Concludes in Bhubaneswar

  • The first Janjatiya Khel Mahotsav concluded with Odisha emerging as the overall champions in both the men's and women's categories. The grand sporting extravaganza was hosted by KIIT and was a joint initiative of the Ministry of Culture and the Odisha Government.
  • The first edition attracted the participation of 5,000 tribal athletes and 1,000 officials from 26 states, with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik describing the games as a historic event. The event provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the athletic prowess of the tribals and promote their cultural heritage and traditional sports on the national stage.
  • Karnataka emerged as the 1st runners up and Jharkhand as the 2nd runners up in the overall.

Indian Archer Aditi Gopichand Swamy Breaks the under 18 World Record

  • Indian archer Aditi Gopichand Swamy scored 711/720 during the 72-arrow compound qualification round and broke the Under 18 world record during the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Colombia.
  • Swamy bettered the previous best of 705/720 set by USA's Liko Arreola. Swamy's score fell just two short of the senior record of 713 held by Colombian Sara Lopez.

Total Prize Money on offer at Wimbledon Rises

  • The total prize money on offer at Wimbledon has risen to a record 44.7 million pounds ($56.52 million) for the Championships this year (2023), the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said.
  • Winners and runners-up of the men's and women's singles finals will also see their prize money rising to previous levels in 2019, where they received 2.35 million pounds and 1.175 million pounds, respectively.
  • The prize money for winners had fallen to 1.7 million pounds in 2021 before it was increased to 2 million pounds in 2022.

Amid Wrestlers' Protest, Wrestling Federation of India to Hold Elections

  • Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections would be held on July 6 amid the ongoing protest by wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, this was announced by the newly-appointed returning officer for WFI elections Mahesh Mittal Kumar.
  • The announcement came after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed retired high court judge Mahesh Mittal Kumar as the returning officer to set the poll process in motion.
  • Each state unit can send two representatives and each representative shall have one vote. So, the Electoral College for the WFI elections will consist of 50 votes. But it is learnt that a few state bodies, dissolved by the WFI in the past, have also staked their claim to participate in the elections.
  • The returning office after going through the credentials of the representatives of the factions will decide who can vote and who cannot.
  • The WFI elections will be held for the post of president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members.

ICC Player of the Month for May 2023

  • Harry Tector was selected as the ICC Men's Player of the Month for May 2023, marking Ireland's first-ever recipient of the award. He emerged victorious in a tough competition against the renowned Pakistani cricketer Babar Azam and Bangladesh's promising young batter Najmul Hossain Shanto. On the other hand, the ICC Women's Player of the Month for May 2023 was awarded to Thipatcha Putthawong (Thailand), a talented 19-year-old player.
