England's Stuart Broad Announces Retirement after the Ashes

England pacer Stuart Broad announced his retirement from cricket. He will quit from the game after the ongoing Ashes series. He has played 167 Test matches, picking 602 wickets. He has also featured in 121 ODIs and 56 T20Is.
Broad, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007, will go down as one of the great pacers in the sport – he sits at fifth on the all-time list of wicket-takers, and is one of only two fast bowlers to take over 600 wickets, alongside long-time bowling partner Jimmy Anderson.
He is the only English player with two hat-tricks to his name in Test cricket. His finest hour in Test cricket came against his arch-rivals Australia when put himself in cricketing folklore with a stunning 8/15 at Trent Bridge in 2015.

Taylor Fritz Wins Atlanta Open for his 6th Career ATP Tour Title

Taylor Fritz won his sixth career title, beating Aleksandar Vukic of Australia 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 at the Atlanta Open.
The top seed and highest-ranked American at No. 9 tuned up for the US Open with his second victory of the season on hard courts, having won the Delray Beach title in February.

Shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar Clinches Gold Medal at FISU World University Games

Rifle shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and the mixed compound archery team of Aman Saini and Pragati won gold medals for India at the FISU World University Games 2023 in Chengdu, the People's Republic of China.
Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, competing in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions, scored a total of 461.7 in the final to take the top podium.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, who represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, made the cut for the eight-man final after finishing second in the qualifying round.

Iga Swiatek Wins Home WTA Title in Warsaw

Iga Swiatek achieved a significant achievement by securing her fourth WTA title of the year and her very first on home soil. The Polish tennis player showcased her dominance in the final, defeating Germany's Laura Siegemund with an incredible 6-0, 6-1 scoreline in just 68 minutes, denying her opponent any break points throughout the match.
Before reaching the final, she triumphed in a challenging semi-final match against Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, clinching a well-deserved 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Iga Natalia Swiatek is a Polish professional tennis player who currently holds the position of world No. 1 in singles according to the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. With an impressive record, Swiatek has earned the title of four-time major singles champion, conquering the French Open in 2020, 2022, and 2023, as well as the US Open in 2022.
The WTA Poland Open is a tennis tournament held in Warsaw, Poland, and was first held in 2021.
The WTA was founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King and has evolved into one of the most esteemed and respected sports organizations globally.

Punjab Frames All-encompassing Sports Policy

Aiming to make Punjab number one state in the country in the field of sports and to create a sports culture in the state, Minister of Sports Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer announced new incentives for the sportsmen while releasing the details of the new sports policy passed by the Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
In the new sports policy of the state government, the Sports Minister announced the gifts in the form of cash prizes, paving the way for awards for players as well as coaches and jobs for the players. Starting from the construction of sports nurseries, centres equipped with state-of-the-art facilities will be built in every village of the state.

World Aquatics Championships 2023 Concludes

The 2023 World Aquatics Championships took place in Fukuoka, Japan from 14 to 30 July.
China topped the medal table with 40 medals. Australia was second place with 30 medals, followed by the United States with 44 medals. The US was ranked third because Australia won 15 gold medals, while the UD won 7 gold medals. The US was followed by Japan, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain and Canada, respectively.

BWF Japan Open 2023

Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen won the Japan Open 2023 title, beating Indonesian star Jonatan Christie in the men's singles final.
World number one Axelsen of Denmark - who had retained his European title in Poland - won in straight games, 21-7, 21-18.
This was Axelsen's third BWF title of the year.
In the women's singles, world number two An Se Young of the Republic of Korea claimed the title by beating world number five He Bing Jiao of the People's Republic of China.
The men's doubles title went to Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Li of Chinese Taipei.
Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan won the mixed doubles.

Formula 1: Max Verstappen Secures Eighth Straight Win

Formula One leader Max Verstappen raced from sixth on the grid to a crushing eighth win in a row at the Belgian Grand Prix with Sergio Perez a distant second to seal the Belgian Grand Prix one-two for rampant Red Bull. Red Bull's 13th consecutive victory made the team the first in the sport's 73-year history to win the opening 12 races of a season, one more than McLaren managed in 1988 with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Indian Women's Team Wins 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation Tournament

The Indian women's hockey team reigned supreme in the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation International tournament, beating hosts Spain 3-0 in a one-sided contest in Barcelona. Goals from Vandana Katariya (22'), Monika (48'), and Udita (58') helped the Indian women's team stand tall in the end and remain unbeaten in the tournament.

Indian Boxer Ashish Wins ABF Continental Heavyweight Title

Indian pugilist Ashish Bhandor defeated crowd favourite Aekkaphob Auraiwan 5-1 and clinched the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Continental Heavyweight title in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ashish won the fiercely competitive bout in 10 rounds.
The judges' scores of 93:96, 95:96 and 95:94 reflected the intensity and tightness of the bout, with Ashish ultimately claiming the title by a split decision from the three judges.

Ireland Secures Spot in ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024

Ireland became one of the two teams to seal an ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 berth from the Europe Qualifier following a washout against Germany. The match between Ireland and Germany was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. Ireland remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, having registered victories against Italy, Denmark, Austria, and Jersey before their clash against Germany resulted in a washout, as per ICC.
Following their 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier heartbreak, Ireland made a strong comeback in the Europe Qualifier as they secured a spot in next year's T20 World Cup to be held in USA and the West Indies in June 2024.

Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurates Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship...

Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Greater Noida. The event is being held in India for the first time. The international event will see the participation of more than 30 Indian weightlifters, including many Khelo India Athletes who in the past month alone gave India its best-ever performance at the Weightlifting Commonwealth Championships by winning 61 medals in total.
Thakur expressed happiness that India is hosting this prestigious event where more than 15 nations from the Asian region, 200 athletes, and more than 50 technical staff and coaches are participating.
The Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships will conclude on the 5th of August.

Indian Men, Women Football Teams to Participate in Asian Games in China

The Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs permitted the Indian men's and women's football teams to participate in the Asian Games 2023 which will be held in Hangzhou in China from September 23, 2023 to October 8, 2023.
The Sports Ministry had earlier refused to grant clearance to the Indian football teams to take part in the quadrennial competition as they are not ranked amongst the top eight teams in Asia at present. However, Stimac and other stakeholders of the game in India demanded exemption from this regulation citing the promising form of the men's team recently coupled with the fact that similar reliefs have been provided to other sports.

India's Nidhi Buley and Ritika among Four Females to Enter BCCI Umpiring Panel

The Indore-based Buley sisters, Nidhi and Ritika Buley, were among the four retired female cricketers who made their way into the BCCI umpires' panel with a distinction. Nidhi played a Test and ODI for India back in 2006 while her younger sister Ritika represented Madhya Pradesh in 31 First-Class games. The BCCI conducted the exam for retired cricketers and the result was declared.
Apart from them, V. Kritika from Tamil Nadu and Ankita Guha of Vidarbha were the other females who passed the exam and were elevated to the BCCI panel.

Sports Ministry Accords Recognition to Handball Association of India

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports granted official recognition to the Handball Association of India (HAI) as the National Sports Federation (NSF) responsible for promoting and regulating the sport within the country with immediate effect.
Handball Association of India was formed on June 15, 1972 by Jagat Singh Lohan. His contributions during the Munich Olympics played a crucial role in laying its foundation.
HAI serves as the governing body for handball in India and has been a member of the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) and the International Handball Federation (IHF) since 1974. Additionally, it is also a member of the Commonwealth Handball Association and the South Asian Handball Federation.

Aditya Samant Becomes India's 83rd Chess Grandmaster

Aditya Samant became India's 83rd Grandmaster after earning his third GM norm at the Master Tournament (MTO) in the Biel International Chess Festival in Switzerland.
The Maharashtra player had earned his first norm to become a grandmaster at the Abu Dhabi Masters in August 2022.
His second norm was achieved in December 2022 at the 3rd El Llobregat Open.
According to Chessbase India, Aditya has already crossed 2500 in the live ratings, to achieve his third norm, he just needed to play his 9th round game against Aryan Chopra.
Aditya is the third Indian to achieve their final GM norm at the Biel Chess tournament. In 2021, Harshit Raja had earned his 3rd GM norm in Biel, while Pranav Anand had done the same in Biel in 2022.
