Dipa Fourth at World Cup

Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar signed off with another creditable fourth place finish in the women's vault final at the FIG Apparatus World Cup, a Paris Olympics qualifying event, in Doha, Qatar.
Dipa who had finished fourth at the Apparatus World Cup in Baku in March, once again missed out on a medal by a whisker after coming up with a score of 13.333. Navas Karla (13.850) claimed the gold medal, while An Chang Ok (13.833) and Georgieva Valentina (13.466) won the silver and bronze, respectively.
Dipa thus failed to qualify for the Paris Games in vault. The Asian Championships, scheduled to be held in Uzbekistan in May, are the final Olympics qualifying event.

Olympics: Long Jumper Sreeshankar Murali Out of Paris 2024

Sreeshankar Murali's dream of competing at the 2024 Olympic Games is over as the long-jumper said a knee injury suffered during training requires surgery.
With less than 100 days to go for Paris 2024, Sreeshankar is the sole long jumper to have made the automatic cut in men's long jump. At Asian Athletics Championships, Supachalasai National Stadium, Bangkok in July last year (2023), Sreeshankar clinched silver with a best jump of 8.37m, going past the automatic qualification mark of 8.27m.

Nepali Cricketer Dipendra Singh Airee Joins Elite Club with Six Sixes in an Over

Nepal's 24-year-old all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee etched his name in the history books by smashing six sixes in a single over during the ACC Men's T20I Premier Cup clash against Qatar in Al Amerat. Airee's incredible display of power and precision joined the elite company of Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard, who had previously achieved the same feat in Men's T20Is.
Airee's six sixes in an over followed in the footsteps of two cricketing legends. Yuvraj Singh was the first to achieve this feat, doing so during the 2007 ICC Men's T20 World Cup against England, where he smashed Stuart Broad for six consecutive maximums. Years later, in 2021, Kieron Pollard joined Yuvraj in the elite club when he unleashed his power against Sri Lanka's Akila Dananjaya in a T20I match in Coolidge.

Paris Olympics 2024 Flame Lit at Olympia

The torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics was lit in ancient Olympia, Greece the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, in a traditional ceremony. The flame marked the final stretch of the preparations for the Games and will now begin its journey that culminates in the French capital when the fire cauldron at the Stade de France will be lit using the flame during the opening ceremony.

Dharamsala to Get India's First "Hybrid Pitch"

The picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium became the first BCCI-accredited venue to install a state-of-the-art 'hybrid pitch' and future international and IPL matches will be held on this track.
The Netherlands-based 'SISGrass', a part of the SIS Pitches group of companies, was roped in for the first-ever hybrid pitch installation.

England's Nat Sciver-Brunt Named Wisden's Top Women's Cricketer

Pat Cummins and Nat Sciver-Brunt were named as the Leading Cricketers in the World in the 2024 edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
He is the first Australian man to be named as Wisden's Leading Cricketer since Michael Clarke in 2012, and succeeds his England counterpart Ben Stokes, who had claimed the honour three times in four years, in 2020, 2021 and 2023.
Sciver-Brunt, meanwhile, was recognised as the pre-eminent women's cricketer of the moment, particularly in light of her starring role in the Women's Ashes, in which she produced back-to-back ODI centuries to take the multi-format series to the wire.

Mumbai Stunned, Mohun Bagan Win League Shield

A dominant Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1 and won their maiden ISL League Shield.
Liston Colaco and Jason Cummings struck for Mohun Bagan, while Lallianzuala Chhangte struck for Mumbai City FC.
This was Mohun Bagan's first victory over the two-time shield winners across four seasons as the Mumbai heavyweights were also unbeaten over them in previous eight matches, winning six of them.
The win also sealed their berth in the AFC Champions League 2 for the first time.

Rohit Sharma Becomes First Indian to Hit 500 T20 Sixes

India and Mumbai Indians star batter Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to smash 500 sixes in T20 cricket.
The 'Hitman' achieved this milestone during his side's Indian Premier League match against Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit Sharma is the 5th player overall to attain the milestone of 500 sixes. Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Colin Munro have reached the milestone of 500 sixes before him.

Rashmi Kumari Wins National Women's Carrom Title for the 12th Time

Rashmi Kumari etched her name deeper into the annals of Indian carrom history by claiming her 12th National Carrom Championship title. The three-time World Champion overcame a tough challenge from K. Nagajothi in the women's final, emerging victorious with a score line of 25-8, 14-20, 25-20.
As the Chief Manager at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Rashmi has seamlessly balanced her professional responsibilities with her passion for the sport, cementing her status as one of the most decorated carrom players in the country.
The 51st National Carrom Championship, sponsored by the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) and SYNCO carrom company held in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, attracted a strong field of 237 men and 174 women participants from across the country. The tournament showcased the depth and diversity of talent in the sport, with the semiofinals and quarterfinals providing a glimpse into the future of Indian carrom.

Lithuania's Mykolas Alekna Breaks Discus Throw World Record Set in 1986

Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna broke the men's discus throw world record with a 74.35m effort at the Oklahoma Throws Series competition.
Mykolas, son of former two-time Olympian gold-medal-winning discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna, eclipsed a record set in 1986. Utilising windy conditions, Mykolas broke the record throw of German athlete Jurgen Schult, who achieved a best of 74.08m in June 1986.
Mykolas' throw was originally measured at 74.41m but was later revised by World Athletics. WA also rated Mykolas' performance as "the best discus throw series in history", with throws 72.21m, 70.32m, 72.89m, 70.51m, 74.35m (WR) and 70.50m to his name.
