India's First Dark Sky Reserve to Soon Come up in Ladakh

  • A part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary at Hanle in Ladakh is all set to become India's first Dark Sky Reserve. The site will also promote astronomy-tourism, giving a boost to local tourism through science.
  • Being a cold desert region, Ladakh holds great potential for undertaking uninterrupted astronomical observations.
  • At a height of 4,500 metres, Hanle is already home to optical, gamma ray and infrared telescopes at the Indian Astronomical Observatory complex operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru. These telescopes are in use for studying stars, galaxies, exoplanets and the evolution of our universe.
  • Hanle is pristine for the dry weather for most months of the year, remains cloudless during nights and offers dark skies – making it a perfect natural setup for sky gazing.

Scientists Discover Tsunami-Like 'Starquakes' In Milky Way

  • Scientists discovered that stars (or planets) in the galaxy experience "starquakes" that ripple through their surfaces like tsunamis on Earth. The discovery was made by European Space Agency's (ESA's) Milky Way-mapping Gaia mission.
  • These starquakes are so powerful that they can even change the shape of a star.
  • The phenomenon was discovered based on data of nearly two billion stars collected by the Gaia space observatory. "Previously, Gaia had found radial oscillations that cause stars to swell and shrink periodically, while keeping their spherical shape. But Gaia has now also spotted other vibrations that are more like large-scale tsunamis.

Ashwini Vaishnaw: India to have 5G Services by March 2023

  • India will get a full-fledged 5G services by March 2023, said Union Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Viva Technology 2022 event.
  • Vaishnaw said that the auction of the 5G spectrum will be completed by July end, adding, "Telecom is the primary source of digital consumption and it is very important to bring trusted solution in telecom. India has its own stack of 4G like radio, equipment and handset. 4G is ready to deploy in the field and 5G is ready in the lab, and 5G will be ready to deploy in March 2023.
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally approved the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)'s 5G spectrum auction through which spectrum will be assigned to bidders to provide 5G services to the public as well as enterprises.

ISRO to Launch 3 Singapore Satellites by End of June

  • Space PSU NewSpace India (NSIL) will launch a batch of satellites from Singapore by June-end, and another mission involving a west Asian country is in the pipeline. NSIL will launch two missions involving foreign satellites this year, and that the first was expected to happen in a matter of weeks onboard ISRO's workhorse PSLV.
  • Sources said the three satellites from Singapore, including the main earth observation satellite, will together weigh around 500 kg, which is about half the capacity ISRO's PSLV can put into orbit.

A Celestial Loner Might be the First Known Rogue Black Hole

  • A single celestial body – more massive than the Sun, yet much smaller – is moving in a galaxy a few thousand light-years away from Earth. It may be the first isolated stellar-mass black hole found in a galaxy. Or it could be one of the heaviest neutron stars known. The interstellar wanderer first revealed itself in 2011, when its gravity briefly magnified light from a more distant star. But at that time, its true nature was not found by the researchers. Now, two teams of astronomers have analyzed Hubble Space Telescope images to uncover the identity of the traveler — and come to somewhat different conclusions.
  • For greater than a decade, researchers have been scanning the heavens for solitary black holes. The searches have hinged on Einstein's theory of general relativity, which states that any large object, even an unseen one, bends area in its neighborhood.
