Nishad Kumar Wins High Jump Silver

  • Team India athlete Nishad Kumar bagged a silver medal in the men's high jump - T47 category final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • With a leap of 2.04 metres, this is also Kumar's season-best performance. It noted that he bagged a silver medal during the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics as well.
  • United States of America (USA) athlete Roderick Townsend-Roberts extended his lead over Kumar with a season-best jump of 2.08m and won the gold medal, and Russia's Georgii Margiev took the bronze.

Nicholas Pooran Overtakes Chris Gayle for Most T20 Sixes in a Calendar Year

  • West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran is having the year of his life and has broken his fellow countryman Chris Gayle's record of most T20 sixes in a calendar year. Pooran scored 97 while playing for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), hitting nine sixes in his innings.
  • In total, Pooran now has 139 sixes in 58 T20 matches he has played so far in the year 2024. Gayle had hit 135 sixes in 35 T20 matches he had played in 2015.
  • With a quarter of the year still left in 2024, Pooran is sure to have his record improved from the current 139 sixes.

Shakib Al Hasan Becomes Cricket's most Successful Left-arm Spinner

  • Shakib Al Hasan has led the revolution of the left-arm spin tribe between the two contrasting periods in a nearly 17-year active career. In Rawalpindi, the Bangladeshi maverick surpassed Daniel Vettori and became the most successful left-arm spinner, soaring to 707 wickets in 444 international appearances.

Karthik Venkataraman Clinches Second Indian National Title

This is the second victory in a national championship for Karthik, who had also won the tournament in 2022. Surya Ganguly and Neelash Saha scored as many points as the champion, but finished in second and third place on tiebreaks.

  • West Indies pacer Shannon Gabriel announced his international retirement. Having debuted in 2012, Gabriel was an integral part of West Indies' Test line-up and played his last game versus India during the two-match home series in 2023. Gabriel retired from the international level having represented West Indies in 59 Tests, 25 ODIs and 2 T20Is. He accounted for 166, 33 and 3 scalps in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. The speedster was known to hit the deck hard and extract seam movement off the surface.

Zaheer Khan Succeeds Gautam Gambhir as New Mentor for Lucknow Super Giants

  • Former India bowler Zaheer Khan succeeded Gautam Gambhir as the new mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), as announced by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Zaheer, who represented Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during his playing stint, will take the role from IPL 2025.

England Batter Dawid Malan Announces International Retirement

  • England batter Dawid Malan announced his retirement from international cricket as he dropped the curtains on his illustrious career. Having represented England in all three formats, he retired with a unique distinction of having scored a hundred in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. His last international appearance was at the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 and was since overlooked for the international set-up.
  • Malan made his debut in June 2017 when he was 30. He got rewarded for his excellent form during the South Africa series as he made his Test debut. He was part of the England squad during the Ashes in 2017 in Australia and was the fourth-best batter during the tour. Despite his excellent run in the T20I and Test format, it was not until 2019 that he was handed an ODI cap.
