Centre Extends Tenure of DCGI Dr. V. G. Somani by another Three Months

  • The tenure of Dr. V. G. Somani as the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) was again extended by another three months, according to an order issued by the Union Health Ministry.
  • He was earlier given an extension in August 2022.
  • Dr. Somani was appointed the DCGI for a term of three years on August 14, 2019.
  • The DCGI heads the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which is responsible for ensuring quality drugs supply across the country.It also has authority to give approval to new drugs and regulate clinical trials.

Assam Govt. Launches Mission Basundhara 2.0

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the much-awaited Mission Basundhara 2.0 in an official ceremony held at Shrimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Auditorium in Guwahati.
  • Sarma launched Basundhara 2.0 in Guwahati. Apart from formal launch of the service under Mission Basundhara 2.0, the Chief Minister also launched the National Generic Documents Registration System (NGDRS) and e-stamping facilities in the state.
  • It is worth mentioning that under Mission Basundhara 2.0, a total of eight services would be provided to the public in digital mode. The new services under Mission Basundhara 2.0 are the settlement of government Khas and ceiling surplus land, conferring ownership rights to occupancy tenants, settlement of transferred annual Patta land, settlement of village grazing reserve and professional grazing reserve, settlement of land for indigenous special cultivators, settlement of hereditary land of tribal communities, composite land transfer service and online payment of land revenue.
  • The first phase of Mission Basundhara was launched in 2021 to provide a time-bound solution to several services under the revenue department. It had wound up in May 2022, with six lakh people benefiting from it.

NCW Launches Digital Shakti Campaign 4.0 to Empower Women in Cyberspace

  • With a view to make women aware to stand against any illegal or inappropriate online activity, the National Commission for Women (NCW) launched the fourth phase of Digital Shakti Campaign, a pan-India project on digitally empowering and skilling women in cyberspace.
  • The NCW launched the campaign in collaboration with CyberPeace Foundation and Meta.
  • NCW mentioned the continuous efforts of the Commission for empowering women in every sphere across the nation.
  • Digital Shakti started in June 2018 to help women across the nation to raise the awareness level on the digital front, to build resilience, and fight cyber-crime in the most effective ways.

India, Finland Agree to Explore New Areas of Cooperation

  • India and Finland agreed to enhance partnership in areas such as digital partnership in Future ICT, Future Mobile Technologies and digital education.
  • Both the countries also emphasised on having institutionalised joint working groups on areas of mutual interest.
  • The decision was taken during a meeting between Finland's Minister of Education and Culture Petri Honkonen and Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh at North Block in New Delhi.
  • He was accompanied by a high level delegation which later held a separate meeting with the Indian delegation in the presence of the two Ministers.
  • Honkonen's visit came in the wake of the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Finnish counterpart Sanna Marin during a Summit meeting on 16 March, 2021.

Power Minister R.K. Singh Launches Green Energy Open Access Portal

  • With an aim to ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable, and green energy for all and in continuation of several initiatives to promote clean and green energy by the Government of India, the Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh launched the Green Energy Open Access Portal.
  • The Minister of State for Power Krishan Pal, also graced the occasion. Secretary (Power), Chairperson, CEA and CMD, POSOCO along with other senior officers were also present on the occasion.

PM Modi Unveils 108-feet Tall 'Statue of Prosperity' in Bengaluru

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 'Statue of Prosperity', the 108-feet tall bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda on the premises of the Bengaluru International Airport, Karnataka.
  • It has been built to commemorate the contribution of Kempegowda towards development of the city.
  • No other airport in the world has such a tall statue of its founder and this goes as a record in the World Book of Records, Karnataka Higher Education Minister Ashwathnarayan said.
  • The project comprising the Kempegowda statue and a 23-acre theme park has been built at a cost of around Rs. 84 crore.

India, Cambodia Sign Four MoUs in Areas of Culture, Wildlife and Health

  • India and Cambodia signed four MoUs in the areas of culture, wildlife and health. The MoUs were inked following bilateral talks between Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on the sidelines of the ongoing ASEAN Summit at Phnom Penh. During the meeting, wide-ranging discussions were held on several issues.
  • Mr. Dhankhar extended warm appreciation to the Cambodian Prime Minister for the country's very successful chairmanship of the ASEAN Summit.

PM Gati Shakti Multimodal Waterways Summit Held in Varanasi

  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the two-day PM Gati Shakti Multimodal Waterways Summit. The PM Gati Shakti Multimodal Waterways Summit was held at the Deendayal Hastkala Sankul (Trade Centre and Museum) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The primary objective of the summit was to bring together greater awareness about the PM Gati Shakti National Masterplan with a focus on infrastructure development in the waterways.
  • PM Gati Shakti Multimodal Waterways Summit is a transformative approach for improving logistics efficiency and reducing logistics costs to ensure first and last-mile connectivity.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat releases Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment

  • Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat released the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report for the entire country for the year 2022 in New Delhi.
  • As per the 2022 assessment report, the total annual ground water recharge for the entire country is 437.60 billion cubic meters (BCM) and annual ground water extraction for the entire country is 239.16 BCM.
  • The report further said that, out of the total 7089 assessment units in the country, 1006 units have been categorized as over-exploited.
  • The assessment was carried out jointly by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), States and Union Territories, which can be used for taking suitable interventions by various stake-holders.

Kochi Hosts 18th International Telemedicine Conference

  • The 18th International Telemedicine Conference, organised by the Telemedicine Society of India (TSI) in association with TSI Kerala Chapter was held at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, Kerala from November 10-12.
  • The inaugural ceremony was felicitated by S. Somnath, Chairman of ISRO, Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice Chancellor, of Kerala University of Health Science, and Rethan Kelkar, IT Secretary of Kerala. The Chief Guest of the event was S. Somnath, Chairman, of ISRO.
  • Telemedicon 2022 was an annual global conference for healthcare professionals, providers, health insurance providers, online pharmacy chains, industrialists, academic scientists, research scholars and scientists, and medical and engineering stakeholders from various fields of telemedicine, telehealth, e-health, m-health, and digital health. The conference was held in collaboration with government agencies, private organizations, and national and international professional societies.
  • The core theme of the Telemedicon 2022 was 'Strengthening Health Systems Through Sustainable Telemedicine and Digital Health'.
  • It aimed to build platforms involving healthcare regulators, health funding authorities, service providers, and international experts.

PM flags off South India's First Vande Bharat Express in Bengaluru

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the inaugural special of south India's first Vande Bharat Express at Krantiveera Sangolli railway station, Bengaluru.
  • The train connects Mysuru and Chennai via Bengaluru.
  • The Prime Minister also flagged off the 'Bharat Gaurav Kashi Darshan' train, which is operated by Karnataka's Muzrai Department, under the 'Bharat Gaurav' train policy of the railways.
  • The train offers an eight-day tour package at discounted rates for pilgrims.

Kerala to Replace Governor as Varsity Chancellor amid Clash with Arif Mohammad Khan

  • Amid the ongoing clash between the government and the governor, the Kerala government said that it will pass an ordinance through which the Governor will no longer serve as the chancellor of state universities. Instead, an academic will become the chancellor. The decision to issue the ordinance was taken in a cabinet meeting. Kerala Higher Education Minister R. Bindu has confirmed the move.
  • However, the ordinance will have to be signed by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan with whom the government is at loggerheads over many issues, including the functioning of the varsities. Minister R. Bindu said she hopes that the Governor would sign the ordinance, once the government brings it, according to his constitutional duties.
