Gustavo Petro Takes Oath as the President of Colombia

Colombia's first leftist President was sworn in, promising to fight inequality and heralding a turning point in the history of a country haunted by a long war between the government and guerrilla groups.
Sen. Gustavo Petro, a former member of Colombia's M-19 guerrilla group, won the presidential election in June by beating conservative parties that offered moderate changes to the market-friendly economy, but failed to connect with voters frustrated by rising poverty and violence against human rights leaders and environmental groups in rural areas.

US Committed to Defending Philippines

Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured the Philippines that the United States would come to its defence if attacked in the South China Sea, seeking to allay concerns about the extent of the US commitment to a mutual defence treaty.
In meetings in Manila dominated by discussion on simmering US-China tensions over the Taiwan visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Blinken said a 70-year-old defence pact with the Philippines was "ironclad".

US, Russia, China Take Part in Talks with SE Asian Nations amid Tensions

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken joined the Foreign Ministers of Russia and China at a meeting with top diplomats from Southeast Asia that came at a time of increased tensions between Washington, Moscow and Beijing.
The East Asia Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings in Cambodia's capital was the first time the three men were scheduled to take part in the same forum.

Japan Calls for Immediate Cancellation of China Military Drills

Japan's Prime Minister condemned China's firing of ballistic missiles during military drills around Taiwan, calling them a serious problem that impacts Japan's national security and the safety of its citizens".
Five Chinese missiles appeared to have fallen in the country's exclusive economic zone, with four of those believed to have flown over Taiwan's main island.
China's actions this time around have a serious impact on the peace and stability of our region and the international community," said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Pelosi was in Tokyo for the final leg of an Asian tour that included a stop in Taiwan, infuriating Beijing, which launched its largest-ever military drills around the self-ruled island in response.

External Affairs Minister Participates in ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting

External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar participated in the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting at Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
Dr. Jaishankar thanked Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and other Foreign Ministers of ASEAN countries for a good discussion.
He said that there was strong convergence on Indo-Pacific, United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea connectivity, COVID-19, terrorism, cyber security, Ukraine and Myanmar. He added that digital, health, agriculture education and green growth would drive the ASEAN-India partnership.
On the sidelines of the event, Dr. Jaishankar met his Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabry and congratulated him on his new responsibility.
The External Affairs Minister also met his Vietnamese counterpart and agreed to keep working to maintain the momentum of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

China to Halt Cooperation with US over Climate and Military Issues

Following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the China government threatened to take counter-measures including severing diplomatic ties with the US.
The foreign ministry asserted that it will cancel military and climate talks with the US. China also said, it will also suspend US-China maritime safety mechanism, US-China anti-drug cooperation and the cooperation in repatriating illegal migrants.
Beijing on Friday announced unspecified sanctions on Pelosi over her visit claiming that she disregarded China's concerns and resolute opposition to her visit to the self-ruled island.
