Mini-Super massive Black Hole in Star-Forming Dwarf Galaxy

  • According to new research led by Dartmouth College astrophysicists, a super massive black hole with 200,000 solar masses is located in the middle of the dwarf galaxy Markarian 462 (Mrk 462).
  • Mrk 462 lies approximately 110 million light-years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici.
  • Otherwise known as ECO 6421, IRAS Z13493+4027 and LEDA 49191, this dwarf galaxy contains only a few hundred million stars, which means it holds about a hundred times fewer stars than a massive galaxy like the Milky Way.
  • Black holes are notoriously hard to find in dwarf galaxies because they are usually too small and dim for optical light telescopes to track the rapid motions of stars in the centers.
  • The black hole in Mrk 462 is among the smallest of the super massive, or monster, black holes.

China's Chang'e 5 Lunar Probe Finds First on-site Evidence of Water on Moon's Surface

  • China's Chang'e 5 lunar lander found the first-ever on-site evidence of water on the surface of the moon, lending new evidence to the dryness of the satellite.
  • The study revealed that the lunar soil at the landing site contains less than 120 parts-per-million (ppm) water or 120 grams water per ton, and a light, vesicular rock carries 180 ppm, which are much drier than that on Earth.
  • The presence of water had been confirmed by remote observation but the lander has now detected signs of water in rocks and soil.
  • A device on-board the lunar lander measured the spectral reflectance of the regolith and the rock and detected water on the spot for the first time.

  • China's "artificial sun" set a new world record after superheating a loop of plasma to temperatures five times hotter than the sun for more than 17 minutes.
  • The EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a temperature of 158 million degrees Fahrenheit (70 million degrees Celsius) for 1,056 seconds. The achievement brings scientists a small yet significant step closer to the creation of a source of near-unlimited clean energy.

BMW Unveils Car that Changes Colour

  • BMW unveiled a chameleon car that changes colour, in the latest attempt by automotive firms to combine their vehicles with cutting-edge technology.
  • At the touch of a button, a driver can change the shade of the car's exterior, allowing the colour to shift between black and white or even light and dark stripes by activating electronic ink in the wraparound shell.
  • According to BMW, the effect is created by applying an electrical charge to microcapsules – which contain particles of white and black pigments – suspended within a liquid encased in the wrap. The colour alternates depending on whether a negative or positive charge is applied, causing either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule.

Technicians Successfully Deploy James Webb Telescope Giant Sunshield

  • NASA technicians successfully fully deployed the massive sunshield protecting the James Webb Space Telescope.
  • The sunshield - about the size of a tennis court at full size - was folded to fit inside the payload area of an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket's nose cone prior to launch. The Webb team began remotely deploying the sunshield on Decemebr 28, 2021, three days after launch.
