Newly Elected MLAs Take Oath in Punjab Assembly

  • The oath-taking ceremony of the 117 newly-elected MLAs began with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann being sworn in as a member of the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
  • Inderbir Singh Nijjar, who was appointed protem speaker of the assembly, administered the oath to the legislators, most of who are first-time members.
  • Among Congress MLAs who were administered oath included Sukhjinder Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Bajwa and Partap Singh Bajwa.

Delhi Metro Employee Enters Guinness World Records for Fastest Time to Travel across Network

  • In March 2022, Prafull Singh, a Delhi Metro employee set Guinness World Records for clocking "the fastest time to travel across all metro stations," and becoming the first person to cover 348-km-network of the Metro in 16 hours and two minutes.
  • "I have been using the Delhi Metro for a long time so I am aware of all the lines. My planning was from which station and line I should start and end to set the record," said Singh.

Bihar: Sharad Yadav Says His Party to Merge with RJD

  • Sharad Yadav announced the merger of his party Loktantrik Janata Dal with Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal on March 20.
  • Claiming that the BJP government has been a failure and people are seeking a strong opposition, Sharad Yadav said that this step (merger) was necessitated as an initiative of my regular efforts for bringing together scattered Janata parivar in view of the current political situation in the country.
  • This merger marks Yadav joining hands with Lalu Prasad after over three decades.

India's First 'World Peace Center' Will be Established in Gurugram

  • Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti organisation established by Ambassador of Peace, Eminent Jainacharya Dr Lokeshji will establish India's first World Peace Center in Gurugram, Haryana. 'World Peace Center' will work for the establishment of peace and harmony in the world.
  • World Peace Center' will be a major world-class centre for personality building, where various dimensions such as Personality Development of Youth, Empowerment of Women and Sanskar Development in Children through Meditation, Yoga, Indian Culture and Jain lifestyle based scientific programs will also be conducted here.
  • The voice of this centre of Gurugram will be heard all over the world by its work, including the United Nations and the World Religion Parliament.

Chair of Excellence at United Service Institution of India in Memory of General Bipin Rawat

  • On the 65th birthday former Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, the Indian Army dedicated a Chair of Excellence in his memory at the United Service Institution of India (USI).
  • The formal announcement was made by Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane. A cheque of Rs. 5 lakh was handed over to Major General BK Sharma (retd), Director, USI which will be paid as honorarium to the nominated Chair of Excellence.
  • Called the 'Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Chair of Excellence', it will focus on the field of 'Jointness and Integration' of the forces.
  • The aim of the proposed Chair of Excellence will be to conduct research on 'strategic issues of significance' pertaining to the Armed Forces. The topic for this year's research was chosen as "Jointness and Integration in the Context of Land Warfare in India".

  • Several leaders from Haryana including former MLAs, ministers, and social activists from the state joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the national capital in the presence of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain.

Bhagwant Mann Sworn-in as 25th CM of Punjab

  • Bhagwant Mann took oath as the 25th CM of Punjab at Khatar Kalan, the birthplace of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Mann had announced his oath-taking ceremony date and invited the people of Punjab to attend the ceremony at Khatkar Kalan.
  • The swearing-in ceremony of Bhagwant Mann was a low-profile event with the absence of big political leaders. Mann invited Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to the oath-taking ceremony.

Motor Vessel Ram Prasad Bismil Becomes Longest Vessel ever to Sail on Brahmaputra River

  • The longest vessel ever to sail on river Brahmaputra was anchored at Pandu Port in Guwahati after completing its pilot run of heavy cargo movement from Haldia Dock in Kolkata.
  • The 90-metre long vessel, MV Ram Prasad Bismil, is loaded with a draft of 2.1 meter. The vessel along with two barges - DB Kalpana Chawla and DB APJ Abdul Kalam - carrying 1,793 metric tonne of steel rods was flagged off from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Haldia by the Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • The pilot run laid down the path for commencement of barging operation from Kolkata to Guwahati through Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBRP).

Sonia Gandhi Fires Navjot Sidhu, 4 other State Congress Chiefs

  • Congress president Sonia Gandhi cracked the whip for embarrassing election losses in the recent cycle, asking party chiefs Navjot Singh Sidhu in Punjab, Ganesh Godiyal in Uttarakhand, Ajay Kumar Lallu in UP, Girish Chodankar in Goa and Nameirakpam Loken Singh in Manipur to resign. Moments later, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said that the presidents of all five state units had resigned taking moral responsibility for the losses.
  • Sonia's firing orders for five state chiefs today is a step towards party revamp. AICC general secretaries in charge of the five states could be next in the line of fire.

Wearing of Hijab Not Essential Religious Practice in Islam, Rules Karnataka High Court

  • The Karnataka High Court ion 15th March, 2022 upheld the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions in the state, saying wearing hijab is not an essential practice of Islam.
  • Upholding the government's power to issue 'Government Order' (GO) on the issue, the high court said prescribing school uniforms was a reasonable restriction on the fundamental right to freedom of expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution and students couldn't object to it.
  • The Supreme Court had refused to intervene in the hijab controversy even as it asserted that it will protect the constitutional rights of everyone and will take up the matter at the appropriate time.

Govt. Formation: BJP Appoints Shah, Rajnath as Observers for UP, Uttarakhand

  • Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh were appointed as the BJP's observers for government formation in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  • Shah will be assisted by BJP vice president Raghubar Das as co-observer and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi will assist Rajnath Singh for selection of the leader of the legislature party in Uttarakhand.
  • Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Narendra Singh Tomar were appointed as observers for selection of the leader of the legislature party in Manipur and Goa.
  • Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is the co-observer for Manipur and his cabinet colleague L Murgan is the co-observer for Goa.
