Mizoram is India's 'Happiest State'

 Mizoram was declared the happiest state in India, as per a study. The research, conducted by Rajesh K. Pillania, a professor of strategy at the Management Development Institute in Gurugram, shared several factors that make the state the happiest in the country.
Mizoram, which is the second state in India to achieve 100 per cent literacy, offers students opportunities for growth even in the most difficult of circumstances.
The study suggested that Mizoram's happiness index is based on six parameters including family relationships, work-related issues, social issues and philanthropy, religion, Covid-19's effect on happiness and physical and mental health.
Researchers stated that Mizoram's social structure also contributes to the happiness of its youth. It has been observed that every child in the Mizo community, regardless of gender, starts earning early.
No task is considered too small and youths typically find employment around the age of 16 or 17. This is encouraged, and there is no discrimination between girls and boys.

India Becomes World's most Populous Nation

  •  With 142.86 crore people, India surpassed China to become the world's most populous nation, according to the latest United Nations data. China, with a population of 142.57 crore, is the second most populous country, the latest statistics showed.
  • As per the data from UN agency UNFP, 25 per cent of India's population is in the 0-14 age bracket and 18 per cent in the 10-19 age group. Twenty-six per cent of India's population is in the 10-24 age bracket and 68 per cent in the 15-64 age bracket. Seven per cent of the country's population is above 65 years of age.
  • Kerala and Punjab have an ageing population, while Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have a younger population.
  • Several studies, carried out by different agencies, have shown that India's population is expected to increase for nearly three decades before it peaks at 165 crore. It will then start to decline, as per reports.

India Contributes $500,000 to UN Entity for Women Empowerment

  •  India contributed USD 500,000 to the UN Women - United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
  • Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, handed over the cheque towards the Government of India's contribution to the core voluntary budget of UN Women. The donation was received by Sima Sami Bahous, the Executive Director of UN Women.
  • As per Kamboj, India's development model is one that is led by women and focuses on entrepreneurship and STEM education.
  • India has been a founding member of the Executive Board of UN Women and is currently serving as a member. Additionally, women-led development is one of the priorities of India's G20 presidency.

Army to Learn Chinese Language in Assam's Tezpur University

  •  Indian Army personnel will learn Chinese at Tezpur University in Assam, where an MoU was signed. "A course in the Chinese language will improve in-house Mandarin expertise and empower army personnel to engage with their Chinese counterparts as needed," said Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat. He stated that with improved Chinese language skills, the army personnel will be able to communicate their points much more effectively.

MoS for Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste Inaugurates India Steel 2023 in Mumbai

  • India Steel 2023, a conference and exhibition on the steel industry began in Mumbai. Union Minister of State for Steel, Mr. Faggan Singh Kulaste inaugurated the conference, jointly organised by the Steel Ministry, the Commerce Ministry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
  • Over the course of the three days, attendees, including industry leaders, policymakers and experts will have the opportunity to discuss topics like logistics infrastructure, demand dynamics and green steel production.
  • The conference at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, will also feature panel discussions and roundtable discussions with key stakeholders and decision-makers in the industry, offering unique insights and perspectives on the future of steel in India.
  • The India Steel 2023 exhibition, showcasing advanced technologies, products, innovations and solutions in the steel sector will also be held concurrently.
  • The exhibition will facilitate business networking and collaboration as well as offer a comprehensive understanding of the latest trends and innovations shaping the steel industry.

Govt. Launches Sangathan se Samridhhi to Mobilise 100 mn Women into SHGs

  • Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh launched 'Sangathan Se Samriddhi' campaign to empower marginalised rural households by bringing all eligible rural women into the fold of Self Help Groups (SHGs). He said that the government is targeting to bring 10 crore women under the purview of SHGs from the existing nine crore.

Karnataka Ex-CM Shettar Gets Congress Ticket

  • Former Karnataka Chief Minister and prominent BJP leader Jagadish Shettar joined the Congress, which immediately nominated him as the party's Hubli-Dharwad Central contestant for the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka.
  • With the induction of Lingayat leader Shettar, the Congress is hoping to win over this numerically strong Lingayat community in the state, as it is perceived to be tilted towards the ruling BJP.
  • Last week, Laxman Savadi, a Lingayat leader of the BJP and former Deputy Chief Minister, joined the Congress and was given ticket to contest from Athani constituency.

Nagaland CM Gets SC Notice for 'Violating' 33% Women Quota Law

  • The Supreme Court issued notices to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, state Chief Secretary and tribal leaders for repealing the Nagaland Municipal Act and violating a undertaking given to the court to roll out 33% reservation for women in local bodies after a gap of more than a decade.
  • The state assembly had on March 29 repealed the 2001 law, leading to cancellation of municipal elections proposed to be held next month. Prior to this, it had given an undertaking to the Supreme Court in a public interest litigation (PIL) proceeding by Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) to abide with Part IXA of the Constitution that provides 33% reservation for women in municipal bodies. This was recorded in an order passed on March 14.
  • Finding the "ingenious" method adopted by the state to be a clear violation of its March 14 order directing elections to 36 town councils and three municipalities, a bench of justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Aravind Kumar said that there is hardly any hesitation to note what is done is in breach of the order of this Court.

Department of Posts Releases Special Cover on Mahila Samman Savings Scheme in Telangana

  • In Telangana, the Department of Posts released a special cover on the Mahila Samman Savings scheme. The scheme is aimed at the financial empowerment of women in the country. Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Jesingbhai Chauhan released the cover in presence of Daaji - Spiritual Guide of Heartfulness and President of Ram Chandra Mission, as part of celebrations of 75 years of India's independence, at Kanha Shanti Vanam - the headquarters of Heartfulness on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The Mahila Samman Savings Scheme was launched this year (2023) as one of the most lucrative investment programmes for women.

Telangana CM unveils 125 ft-tall Ambedkar statue unveiled in Hyderabad

  • Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled the 125-ft tall statue of B R Ambedkar here on April 14, 2023, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the architect of the Constitution, on a grand scale.
  • Flower petals were showered on the statute from a helicopter, paying rich tributes to Ambedkar.
  • The statue was built using 360 tonnes of stainless steel and 114 tonnes of bronze, at a cost of Rs 146.50 crore.Rao had earlier said the India's tallest statue of Ambedkar, which is next to the State Secretariat, and located beside the Telangana Martyrs memorial, will inspire people every day and motivate the entire State administration.

India's Tallest Ambedkar Statue Unveiled

  • Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled a 125-feet-tall statue of Dr. B R Ambedkar on the banks of Hussainsagar, marking the latter's 132nd birth anniversary.
  • The iconic structure of Ambedkar, which set another landmark for the state, is claimed to be the tallest statue in the country ever built for the 'architect of Indian Constitution' – with an overall height of 175-ft, including a 50-ft-high circular base resembling the edifice of Parliament of India.
  • The statue was designed by renowned sculptors, Ram Vanji Sutar (98) and his son Anil Ram Sutar (65) of Ram Sutar Art Creations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, who also designed several monumental sculptures, including the world's tallest statue — the Statue of Unity (597 feet) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat.

BJP Announces Candidates for Elections in Odisha, Punjab

  • Bharatiya Janata Party announced the names of candidates for the upcoming Parliamentary and Assembly bypolls in Punjab and Odisha respectively.
  • Bypolls are scheduled to be held in Punjab's Lok Sabha constituency of Jalandhar (SC) and Odisha's Assembly constituency of Jharsuguda on May 10, the results of which will be declared on May 13, coinciding with those of Assembly elections in Karnataka.
  • The BJP has fielded Sardar Indar Iqbal Singh Atwal for the Jalandhar (SC) bypoll and Tankadhar Tripathy for the Jharsuguda bypoll.
