Vinesh Listed for Best Sportswoman Award

  • Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, who staged a protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and accused him of sexual exploitation and intimidation, were among five athletes nominated for the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award.
  • The others nominees are weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, shuttler P. V. Sindhu and boxer Nikhat Zareen.
  • The nominees were selected by a panel of jury consisting of sports journalists and writers.
  • The winner will be chosen by a public vote, and the winner will be announced on March 5.

Women's Premier League to be Held in Mumbai from 4th to 26th March

  • The much-awaited inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will be played from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai.
  • The Brabourne Stadium and the D. Y. Patil Stadium will host all the matches with the tournament opener expected to be played between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians-owned franchise.

Nepal Cricket Association Appoints Former Indian Cricketer Monty Desai as Head Coach

  • The Nepal Cricket Association appointed former Indian cricketer Monty Desai as the head coach of the Nepal national cricket team. He replaced another former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, who resigned from his post in December 2022. Nepal Cricket Association signed a two-year deal with Monty Desai. Monty was the head coach of teams like West Indies, Canada, UAE. Monty also served as the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

National Ice Hockey Championship: ITBP Wins 3rd Consecutive Time

  • The central ice hockey team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) won the 12th edition of the Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) National Ice Hockey Championship for men- 2023 organized in Leh, Ladakh. The ITBP team defeated the Ladakh Scouts by a score of 1-0 at the final. This was the third time in succession that the mountain trained Force won this premier national ice hockey championship.
  • Top teams of the country participated in this national tournament organized at the Ice Hockey Rink in Ladakh which is located in one of the highest altitude regions of the world. The ITBP is a pioneer in the adventure sports in the country and possesses an unparalleled record of mountaineering and allied sports in the country.

Australia's Aaron Finch Retires from International Cricket

  • Aaron Finch, who led Australia to their first ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2021, called time on his international cricket career.
  • Finch, Australian Men's T20 captain, announced his retirement from all international cricket, 12 years after making his debut.
  • Having retired from One-Day Internationals in September 2022 after playing 146 matches, Finch has now decided to step away from T20 Internationals after playing 103 matches, where he averaged 34.28 at a strike rate of 142.5. He also played five Test matches in 2018.
  • Finch first represented Australia in the U19 World Cup in 2006 -- alongside current internationals Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade and David Warner.
  • Finch captained Australia in 76 T20 Internationals, more than any other men's player, leading the team to a maiden ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2021.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar Handed 21-month Ban after Failing Dope Test

  • Star gymnast Dipa Karmakar was handed a 21-month ban for failing a dope test conducted by the International Testing Agency, contrary to claims made by Indian officials that her "suspension" last year was not related to doping offence. Karmakar's dope sample collected out-of-competition by the ITA, an independent organisation that manages the anti-doping programme of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), was found to contain Higenamine, which is a prohibited substance under World Anti-Doping Agency Code.
  • Her ban period will however, end on July 10, 2023 as it was counted from the day (October 11, 2011) the sample was collected.

Sports Minister Launches Mascot for 3rd Khelo India Winter Game

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur and the LG of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha launched the third Khelo India Winter Games mascot, theme song and jersey.
  • The Winter Games are scheduled to be held from February 10 to 14. Approximately 1500 athletes across the country will participate in the games that will take place in Gulmarg and will be played across nine sports events.
  • The Khelo India Winter Games started in 2020 and it is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is organized by the J&K Sports Council as well as the Winter Games association of the J&K.

Ranji Trophy: Bhut Knocks Out Punjab

  • Parth Bhut capped off a dream game with a five-wicket haul after a game-changing century and a half-century as Saurashtra won a memorable Ranji Trophy quarter-finals against Punjab by 71 runs to set up a semi-finals date with Karnataka.
  • Needing 252 to win, Punjab started the day at 52/2 and was all out for 180 in 89.1 overs with veteran Mandeep Singh's 45 being the highest score.

Raphael Varane Announces Retirement from International Football

  • France defender Raphael Varane announced retirement from international football, ending a 10-year career with Les Bleus in which he won the World Cup in 2018 and was a runner-up four years later.
  • Varane who has 93 caps after making his debut in 2013, also helped Didier Deschamps's side win the UEFA Nations League in the 2020-21 season.
  • Varane's decision came just weeks after France's World Cup-winning goalkeeper and captain, Hugo Lloris, announced his retirement from international football.

Wrestler Aman Wins Bronze at Zagreb Open

  • Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat clinched a bronze medal in the men's 57 kg category at the Zagreb Open Championships in Croatia.
  • Sehrawat defeated USA's Zane Raye Rhodes Richards 10-4 in the bronze medal contest to finish on the podium of the ranking tournament.
  • Aliabbas Rzazade of Azerbaijan bagged the gold, beating Yuto Nishiuchi of Japan 2-0 in the final. The other bronze was won by Beka Bujiashvili of Georgia, who beat Islam Bazarganov of Azerbaijan.

Saudi Arabia to Host 2027 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup

  • Saudi Arabia was declared the host of the 2027 Asian Cup by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at the 33rd AFC Congress.
  • The AFC's executive committee had earlier shortlisted bids from India and Saudi Arabia in October 2022 after Qatar pulled out of the process following their successful bid to host the 2023 edition in place of original hosts China.
  • Iran, Qatar and Uzbekistan were the other countries to have initially bid for the hosting rights.
  • But the Indian federation withdrew its bid in December 2022, effectively sealing the tournament for the Saudis.

Babita Phogat Joins Oversight Committee Panel Formed against WFI

  • Babita Phogat, a former wrestler, joined the oversight committee established to look into the claims made against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The Oversight Committee is also looking into claims of sexual misbehaviour, harassment, and/or intimidation, as well as financial and organisational irregularities made by well-known athletes.
  • The committee was established during the IOA's emergency Executive Council meeting earlier this month, which was also attended by IOA President P. T. Usha, joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey, and people like Yogeshwar and Abhinav Bindra.
  • Babita Phogat is the sixth member of the Oversight Committee, which is led by M. C. Mary Kom, Chairperson of the Athletes Commission and recipient of the Khel Ratna Award.
