Alteration in Canada's PR Norms

  •  The Government of Canada has slightly enhanced its reserve settlement funds (show money) for the permanent residence (PR) category.
  • All PR aspirants will now have to show more reserve funds to the Canadian authorities at the time of filing their applications as well as during landing in Canada.
  • The Canadian authorities have also urged the Express Entry candidates to ensure that their profiles are updated and must reflect their financial position change vis-à-vis fund requirement.
  • The change involves an increase in the requisite minimum settlement funds (known as show money) by over 1.5 per cent for each family.
  • The Canadian immigration norms stipulate that all federal skilled workers and federal skilled trades class aspirants or candidates must show a proof of settlement funds.

President Donald Trump to meet Kim Jong Un

  •  US President Donald Trump will hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in late February on Pyongyang dismantling its nuclear and missile programmes.
  • The two leaders had met on June 12 last year in Singapore for the first summit.
  • While the White House did not identify a location for the second summit between the two leaders, preparations were under way to host the summit, most likely in Vietnam's capital Hanoi or coastal city of Danang.

Trump, N.Korea's Kim to hold second summit in late February

  • U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in late February but will maintain economic sanctions on Pyongyang, the White House said on January 18, after Trump met Pyongyang's top nuclear negotiator.
  • The first summit produced a vague commitment by Mr. Kim Jong Un to work towards the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, but he has yet to take what Washington sees as concrete steps in that direction.

Hitachi Freezes UK Nuclear Project

  •  Japan's Hitachi decided to freeze a 3 trillion yen ($28 billion) nuclear power project in Wales as Britain scrabbles for a way to exit the European Union, dealing a blow to UK plans for the replacement of ageing plants.
  • The suspension comes as Hitachi's Horizon Nuclear Power failed to find private investors for its plans to build a plant in Anglesey, which was expected to provide about 6% of Britain's electricity.
  • Hitachi had called on the British government to boost financial support for the project to appease investor anxiety, but turmoil over the country's impending EU exit limited the government's capacity to compile plans.
  • Hitachi had banked on a group of Japanese investors and the British government each taking a one-third stake in the equity portion of the project.
  • The project would have been financed one-third by equity and rest by debt.

Brexit Deal Rejected

  •  British lawmakers defeated Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit divorce deal by a crushing margin, triggering political upheaval that could lead to a disorderly exit from the EU or even to a reversal of the 2016 decision to leave.
  • Parliament voted 432-202 against her deal, the worst parliamentary defeat for a government in recent British history. Scores of her own lawmakers -both Brexiteers and supporters of EU membership - joined forces to vote down the deal.
  • Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn promptly called a vote of no confidence in May's government, to be held within 24 hours.
  • With the clock ticking down to March 29, the date set in law for Brexit, the United Kingdom is now ensnared in the deepest political crisis in half a century as it grapples with how, or even whether, to exit the European project that it joined in 1973.
  • May's crushing loss, the first British parliamentary defeat of a treaty since 1864, marks the collapse of her two-year strategy of forging an amicable divorce with close ties to the EU after the March 29 exit.
