World's Thinnest X-ray Detector Created

  • The structural characteristics of biological specimens, such as wet proteins and living cells, can be conveniently probed in their host aqueous media using soft X-rays. Conventional X-ray detectors in this area have low spatial resolution, limited sensitivity, and require complex fabrication procedures. Many of these limitations are overcome by introducing a direct soft X-ray detector based on nanosheets of tin monosulfide (SnS).
  • The SnS nanosheets respond very quickly, within milliseconds.
  • You can scan something and get an image almost instantaneously. The sensing time dictates the time resolution.
  • The soft X-ray detector created by Professor Jasieniak and colleagues is less than 10 nanometers thick.
  • Previously, the thinnest X-ray detectors created were between 20 and 50 nanometers.

SpaceX Capsule with 4 ISS Astronauts Returns to Earth, Ending 200-day Flight

  • Four astronauts returned to Earth, riding home with SpaceX to end a 200-day space station mission that began last spring.
  • Their capsule parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida.
  • Their homecoming — coming just eight hours after leaving the International Space Station — paved the way for SpaceX's launch of their four replacements.

First Chinese Woman Walks in Space Scripts History

  • Wang Yaping became the first Chinese woman astronaut to walk in space as she moved out of the under-construction space station and took part in extravehicular activities for over six hours along with her male colleague Zhai Zhigang.
  • The two moved out of the space station core module called Tianhe and spent 6.5 hours of the spacewalk and successfully returned to the module.
  • This marks the first spacewalk in Chinese space history involving a woman astronaut.

NASA Picks Landing Site at the Moon's South Pole for Ice-drilling Robot

  • NASA has set its sights on the moon's South Pole in its quest for ice.
  • The space agency and the company Intuitive Machines announced Shackleton Crater landing site at the South Pole of the moon for a small lander set to launch next year. The location is called the "Shackleton connecting ridge" and NASA data hint at ice lurking below the surface.
  • The robotic mission includes NASA's Polar Resources Ice-Mining Experiment-1 (PRIME-1) that requires solar power and a view of Earth for communications. The ridge zone should provide both.

China Launches 3 New Remote Sensing Satellites

  • China successfully launched three new remote sensing satellites from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre located in southwestern Sichuan province.
  • The satellites belong to the Yaogan-35 family.
  • They were launched by a Long March-2D carrier rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully.
  • This was the 396th mission for Long March series carrier rockets of China.

China Launches Earth Science Satellite

  • China sent an Earth science satellite into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in the northern Shanxi Province.
  • The satellite, called Guangmu, was launched by a Long March-6 carrier rocket and entered the planned orbit.
  • It was the 395th flight mission of the Long March rocket series.
  • Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the satellite (SDGSAT-1) is the world's first space science satellite dedicated to serving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

DoT Forms Innovation Group for 6G Technology

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) formed a technology innovation group on the next frontier, the sixth generation (6G), hoping to take the lead in the development of the technology globally.
  • Telecom secretary K. Rajaraman was named chairperson and the forum aims to create vision and objectives as well as develop a roadmap for research and development (R&D), pre-standardisation, development of applications and products, and action plans for 6G technology.
  • The 22-member group includes additional secretary Anita Praveen, member (Technology) Ashok Kumar Tiwari, member (Services) Deepak Chaturvedi, executive director Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) Rajkumar Upadhyay in addition to directors of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, as well as industry body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) chairman Ajai Puri who is also the chief operating officer (India and South Asia) of Bharti Airtel.

Nokia, Vodafone Idea Partner for Trial of 5G Services Using E-band

  • Nokia announced its partnership with Vodafone Idea to trial 5G services through E-Band in areas where fiber is challenging to deploy.
  • For the trial, the brand has connected small cells and macrocells with "fiber-like" speed through the E-band (60GHz to 90GHz) spectrum.
  • Vodafone Idea is currently conducting 5G trials in India using the trial spectrum in the 3.3GHz-3.6GHz band and mmWave band (24.25GHz-28.5GHz).
  • Vi has been allocated mmWave high bands like 26 GHz by the DoT, along with the traditional 3.5 GHz spectrum band, for 5G network trials.
