South Africa's New Jurassic Giant

A new species of a giant dinosaur has been found in South Africa's Free State Province. The plant-eating dinosaur, named Ledumahadi mafube, weighed 12 tonnes and stood about four meters high at the hips. Ledumahadi mafube was the largest land animal alive on Earth when it lived, nearly 200 million years ago. It was roughly double the size of a large African elephant.

Ancient Sandstone Sphinx Discovered

Egyptian archaeologists draining water from a temple in the southern city of Aswan have uncovered a sandstone sphinx likely dating to the Ptolemaic era.
The sphinx, a mythical being with the head of a human and the body of a lion, was discovered at the Kom Ombo temple.
Ptolemaic rule spanned about three centuries until the Roman conquest in 30 BC.

World's Oldest Brewery

Researchers have found the world's oldest brewery, with residue of 13,000-year-old beer, in a prehistoric cave near Haifa in Israel.
The discovery was made while they were studying a burial site for semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers.
Brewing beer was thought to go back 5,000 years, but the latest discovery may turn beer history on its head.

Two New Dinosaur Fossils Discovered

Scientists have discovered two new dinosaur fossils in China, shedding light on the evolution of insect-eating dinosaurs.
The scientists found the dinosaurs, Bannykus and Xiyunykus, which show adaptations thought to be related to eating insects that live in colonies.
The dinosaurs are both alvarezsaurs, an enigmatic group of theropod (meat-eating) dinosaurs which have many similarities with birds.

Century's Longest Lunar Eclipse

Skywatchers around the world have witnessed the longest "blood moon" eclipse of the 21st Century.
The "totality" period, where light from the Moon was totally obscured, lasted for one hour, 43 minutes.
At least part of the eclipse was visible from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, most of Asia and South America.
Over the coming days, Mars will be at its closest point to Earth since 2003 - visible as a "bright red star" where skies are clear.
