Six Indian Americans Sworn-in as Members of US House of Representatives

In a momentous occasion for Indian Americans, six of their leaders were sworn-in as the members of the US House of Representatives, the largest so far for this minority ethnic community in the United States.
The six Indian Americans are: Ami Bera, Suhash Subramanian, Ro Khanna, Thanedar, Krishnamoorthi and Jayapal.

Johnson Re-elected as House Speaker

Republican Mike Johnson survived a razor-thin vote to remain House Speaker in a drama-filled, highly-anticipated vote that marked the start of complete Republican control in Washington.
Johnson could only afford to lose two votes because of the tight margin of control Republicans have in Congress. While he came close to losing re-election, he survived the vote after some lobbying.
The House Speaker is one of the most powerful posts in Washington, controlling the lower chamber of the US Congress, and second in line to the presidency after the Vice President.

Switzerland Enforces Facial Covering Ban

Switzerland implemented a series of significant changes starting January 1, 2025, which impact various sectors including legal, economic, and social frameworks. These include a ban on facial coverings, reforms to inheritance laws, increased pensions, and measures to strengthen bank solvency and liquidity. The changes reflect a growing alignment with European norms and a response to past financial crises. Here is a detailed overview of these changes.
Switzerland has revised its international inheritance law to better align with the European Succession Regulation.
The reform aims to resolve frequent jurisdictional conflicts between Switzerland and EU/EFTA countries, particularly affecting the Swiss expatriates.

India 2nd most Targeted Nation in Terms of Cyber Attacks

India emerged as the second most targeted nation in terms of cyber attacks in the world as 95 Indian entities came under data theft attacks in 2024, according to a report by cyber intelligence firm CloudSEK.
According to the company's ThreatLandscape Report 2024 based on data monitoring in dark web, the US was the most targeted country, with 140 attacks, due to its economic dominance and digital infrastructure followed by India where data of 95 entities were attacked in 2024.

Pakistan Begins 2-Year Term at UN Security Council

Pakistan replaced Japan for a seat at the world's topmost diplomatic body - the UN Security Council. Islamabad will occupy one of the two seats from the Asia-Pacific region (South Korea being the other) for two years.
Pakistan will also preside over the council in July when it will be the Chair. This will allow Islamabad to set the United Nations Security Council agenda. In addition to this, Islamabad finds itself holding another crucial post after it secured a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, which is responsible for designating individuals and groups as terrorists and imposing sanctions.
This new two-year tenure as a non-permanent member is Pakistan's eighth term at the top UN body.

South Korea Parliament Impeaches Acting President Han Duck-soo

South Korea's political crisis deepened, when parliament voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo. This follows the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol earlier in December 2024, which was triggered by his brief imposition of martial law on December 3. Han had been serving as acting President since Yoon's suspension, but his refusal to appoint three judges to the Constitutional Court led to growing opposition calls for his impeachment. This marks a significant moment in South Korea's political history, as it would be the first time an acting president is impeached.
