Ajay Bhushan Pandey Joins AIIB to Lead 3 Key Departments

  • Former chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) Ajay Bhushan Pandey took charge as vice-president, investment solutions, at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Pandey will lead three departments — the Sectors, Themes, and Finance Solutions Department; the Sustainability and Fiduciary Solutions Department; and the Portfolio Management Department — at the multilateral development bank.
  • Over the last decade, Pandey has been at the helm of several reforms in finance, corporate governance, Aadhaar, digital payments, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and direct tax.
  • His past roles include finance secretary and revenue secretary of India, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (Aadhaar), and Chairman of the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).

Integrated Strategies to Address Tuberculosis and Diabetes WHO & IDF Event 2025 Bangkok

  • World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) jointly hosted a hybrid side event at the IDF World Diabetes Congress in Bangkok, Thailand. Themed 'Bridging gaps: Integrated strategies to address TB and diabetes,'the session highlighted the overlapping global burden of tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes, discussed WHO's latest guidance, and explored country-specific challenges and opportunities for integrated, people-centered care.

Singapore to Hold General Election on 3 May

  • Singapore will head to the polls on May 3, in what will be the first electoral test for its new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
  • The election campaign, which lasts just nine days, is expected to be dominated by the rising cost of living, housing needs, jobs, and a growing demand for healthcare amid an ageing population.
  • Voters are widely expected to return the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) to power. The PAP has won every election since Singapore was granted self rule by the British in 1959.
  • The country's last election in 2020 saw the opposition Workers' Party secure 10 seats - the biggest victory for the opposition since Singapore gained independence in 1965.

  • Sitting centre-right President Daniel Noboa won the run-off round of Ecuador's presidential election, meaning he will now serve a full four-year term.
  • Noboa, who described his victory as historic, has only been in power since November 2023 after winning a snap election.

Pete Hoekstra Confirmed as US Ambassador to Canada

  • The US Senate confirmed the appointment of Pete Hoekstra to be the US ambassador to Canada, as ties between the two traditional allies reached their lowest point in years.
  • Hoekstra, a Republican, is a former ambassador to the Netherlands and represented Michigan in the House from 1993 to 2010.
  • The Senate voted 60-37 to confirm Hoekstra's appointment, with several Democrats voting alongside Republicans to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee.
  • He succeeded David L. Cohen as the US ambassador to Canada.
