28 Agreements Signed During the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit

PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met during the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit to discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations, including regional and global issues.
The meeting saw the signing of 28 agreements across sectors from defence to energy to space exploration, science and technology, heavy engineering, to trade and investment.

Maitri Diwas

India and Bangladesh has jointly celebrated the Maitri Diwas on 6th December 2021 to commemorate 50 years of the Bangladesh Liberation War.
During the visit of PM Shri Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in March 2021 to attend the national day of Bangladesh, it was decided to commemorate 06 December as Maitri Diwas (Friendship Day). India had recognised Bangladesh on 06 December 1971. India was one of the first countries to establish bilateral diplomatic ties with Bangladesh.
The Maitri Diwas is being commemorated in 18 countries around the world apart from in Dhaka and Delhi. These countries are Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Qatar, Singapore, UK, Australia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, UAE and USA. The holding of Maitri Diwas is a reflection of the deep and abiding friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh that has been forged in blood and shared sacrifices.

US Boycotted Olympics 2022

The US Government recently announced the boycott of Olympics 2022. The Olympics 2022 is to be held in Beijing.
The US cited that "China's human rights ATTROCITIES" is the main reason for its boycott.
The US is boycotting for the following human rights atrocities of China:
Situations in Taiwan and Tibet.
The crackdown in Hong Kong.
Abuse of minority Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

Russia Annual Summit

The 21st India Russia Annual Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin was held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on December 6, 2021.
First-ever India-Russia '2+2' dialogue held in New Delhi and the participants were Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
India signed an agreement for procurement of 6 lakh AK-203 rifles from Russia for Rs. 5000 crores.

EKUVERIN - Joint Military Exercise Between India and Maldives

The 11th edition of Exercise EKUVERIN between India and Maldives will be conducted at Kadhdhoo Island, Maldives from 6th December, 2021. It will conclude on 19th of December. The exercise will enhance synergy and inter-operability between Armed Forces of both the nations in terms of understanding transnational terrorism both on land and at sea, conducting Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency Operations and sharing best military practices and experiences.
Besides rigorous training, the joint military excercise will also include cultural and sports activities to enhance defence cooperation and bilateral relations.

China Launches its First USD 6 Billion Cross-border BRI Train with Laos

A 1000 km-long high-speed railway linking China and the southeast Asian country of Laos was inaugurated as part of President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global infrastructure project.
The $6 billion railway, connecting the Chinese city of Kunming with Laotian capital Vientiane was built by a Chinese state-owned company, with China bearing 70% of all construction costs.
While both governments hailed the project as mutually beneficial and a win-win initiative, economists have warned that it could complicate Laos' challenges, among the poorer southeast Asian nations, in repaying external debt.
President Xi and his Lao counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith jointly witnessed the opening of the China-Laos railway via video link.

United Airlines Becomes World's First Airline to Fly on 100 per cent Sustainable Fuel

The US-based carrier United Airlines made aviation history when it operated the first-ever commercial flight on 100 per cent sustainable fuel in one of two engines. The flight operated from Chicago's O'Hare Airport to Washington. Sustainable aviation fuels, are jet fuels created from waste products and other sustainable feedstocks that have the potential to reduce emissions by 80 per cent.

Gita Gopinath Named as IMF's First Deputy Managing Director

The International Monetary Fund named its chief economist Gita Gopinath to become its second-ranking official, replacing First Deputy Managing Director Geoffrey Okamoto who will leave the global lender in early 2022.
Gopinath had been scheduled to leave the global lender to return to Harvard University in January, but decided to stay on in the wide-ranging policy role under IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
Gopinath, the first woman to serve as the fund's chief economist, has played a key role in broadening the role of the IMF's research department, creating a new analytical approach to help countries respond to international capital flows, and also worked on a detailed IMF plan to end the pandemic.
