In an Election Year, West Bengal Topped in Fake News Cases on Social Media

  • West Bengal recorded the highest number of recorded cases against fake news on social media in 2021, accounting for about one-fourth of the total such cases across the country, according to NCRB data.
  • West Bengal reported 43 cases of fake news on social media with Kolkata alone recording 28 of these cases, according to data published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
  • Bengal witnessed a high decibel electoral battle in 2021 between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP with the two sides leaving no stones unturned in reaching out to the people.

Vasudha Gupta Assumes Charge as DG, AIR News

  • Senior Indian Information Service officer Vasudha Gupta assumed charge as the director general of the News Services division of the All India Radio (AIR).
  • A 1989-batch IIS officer, Gupta has served in various capacities in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during her career spanning more than 32 years.
  • Before her appointment as the director general of the News Services division of the AIR, she served as the DG, Press Information Bureau (PIB).

  • Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia founder Shivpal Yadav announced the formation of a new organisation for the Yadav community, and said that it will fight for the cause of social justice.
  • The organisation -- Yadukul Renaissance Mission -- is not for or against any political party.
  • While Shivpal is the patron of the organisation, former MP from Sambhal DP Yadav is its president while writer Vishwatma is founder member of the Mission.

Govt. Approves Signing of MoU with Nepal on Biodiversity Conservation

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an environment ministry proposal for signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Nepal on biodiversity conservation.
  • The MoU would help in promoting cooperation between India and Nepal in the field of forests, wildlife, environment, biodiversity conservation and climate change, including restoration of corridors and interlinking areas, and sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • The region along the Indo-Nepal border hosts some of the best wildlife habitats remaining in the Indian subcontinent.

Inter-ministerial MoU Inked for Promotion of 'One Herb, One Standard'

  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (Ministry of Ayush) and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (Ministry of Health) for inter-ministerial cooperation for the promotion and facilitation of "One Herb, One Standard".
  • The primary objective of this MoU is the development of cooperative efforts between the PCIM&H and the IPC to promote public health by facilitating the development of harmonised herbal drug standards. Since both the PCIM&H and the IPC are working with the common cause, it is logical and meaningful to harmonise the standards to achieve 'One Herb, One Standard'."

Indian Railway Installed 'Meghdoot' Machines at Mumbai Stations

  • Indian Railways have set up 'Meghdoot' machines at Dadar, Thane and other stations of the Mumbai Division. The unique 'Meghdoot' machines use innovative technology to convert water vapour in the air into potable water. The contract for setting up 17 'MEGHDOOT', Atmospheric Water Generator Kiosks' over Mumbai Division of Central Railway under NINFRIS policy for a period of 5 years has been awarded to Maithri Aquatech Pvt Ltd.

Nagesh Singh is India's Ambassador to Thailand

  • Nagesh Singh was appointed as India's next ambassador to Thailand.
  • Singh will be replacing ambassador Suchitra Durai and is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
  • Nagesh Singh is a 1995 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) who has served as Consul General of India in Atlanta.
  • He holds a master's degree from the Delhi School of Economics.

Rajasthan Registers Highest Number of Rape Cases in 2021: NCRB Report

  • According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Rajasthan recorded the highest number of rape cases in the country in 2021.
  • As per the numbers, the crime rate in the country increased by more than 19 per cent compared to the previous year (2020). While it ranks second after Uttar Pradesh in overall crime against women, it continues to be ahead in rape cases.

Shah Faesal Appointed Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Culture

  • Shah Faesal, a 2010 batch IAS topper of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre, now AGMUT, was appointed as the Deputy Secretary in the Union Ministry of Culture under the Central Staffing Scheme.
  • As per report, his appointment will be for a period of four years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until further orders.

Cybercrime against Women up 28% Since 2019, Karnataka's Share Highest

  • As per data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of cybercrime incidents in 2021 went up by 18.4 per cent since 2019, but the number of such cases against women rose at a significantly steeper 28 per cent.
  • Of the 52,974 incidents reported in 2021, 10,730 — 20.2 per cent — were reported as cases of crime against women, the data revealed.
  • The top five states accounted for 61 per cent share of cybercrimes against women. Karnataka had the highest share with 2,243 cases in 2021, followed by Maharashtra with 1,697, and Uttar Pradesh with 958 cases.

President Droupadi Murmu Meets with Queen Máxima of Netherlands

  • Queen Máxima of the Netherlands called on President Droupadi Murmu and they discussed deepening of bilateral ties between the two countries.
  • The two leaders also discussed in detail several aspects of universal financial inclusion which has been one of the main agenda of the Government of India.
  • President Murmu said that the Government of India is committed to connect every Indian with formal banking channels through various means and to ensure that the benefits provided by the government reach the last mile and the intended beneficiary without any pilferage. Queen Máxima appreciated the progress made in India in this direction in the last few years.
  • Queen Máxima visited India from in her official capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development and G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion honorary patron.
