Pakistan President Alvi dissolves Parliament at PM Shehbaz Sharif's advice

  • Pakistan President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on August 9 at outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's advice, marking an end to the current government's tenure and paving the way for next general elections.
  • The notification for the dissolution of the Parliament was issued by the Aiwan-i-Sadr, which said the National Assembly was dissolved under Article 58 of the Constitution.
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif on Wednesday wrote to President Alvi and sought dissolution of the National Assembly three days before the end of its five-year constitutional term.
  • President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly at midnight on Wednesday at outgoing Prime Minister Sharif's advice, the Dawn newspaper reported.
  • With the dissolution of the Lower House, the current government's tenure will also end prematurely.

What is ECOWAS, the West African bloc that could intervene in Niger's coup?

  •  In a July 26 coup, soldiers in the West African nation of Niger installed Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani as head of state after ousting President Mohamed Bazoum, who said he was held "hostage". Along with the difficult economic conditions already prevailing in the country, what has added to the concern for some in the West are the Nigerien calls for assistance from Russia's Wagner Group.
  • A mercenary organisation that was also active in the Ukraine war and maintained a footprint in Africa, the Group has fallen out of favour with Russian President Vladimir Putin after its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin attempted a coup in Moscow in late June this year. However, its presence in Africa pre-dates its involvement in Ukraine.
  • Apart from the expected international players, such as Russia and the United States, the regional bloc ECOWAS or the Economic Community of West African States has been playing an active role. Its heads of state will meet on Thursday (August 10) to discuss their next steps, after Niger's military junta defied their August 6 deadline to reinstate the country's ousted president and the soldiers closed the country's airspace. There is also apprehension that ECOWAS may choose to intervene militarily.

India to support clean water project at school in Tuvalu with 700,000 USD

  • According to a statement from India's Permanent Mission to the UN, the country will contribute 700,000 USD from the India-UN Development Partnership Fund to the Tuvalu project to store and provide clean water in schools. Notably, the only public school in Tuvalu is called "Motufoua Secondary School." With a 760 metric cube capacity, the proposed concrete water cistern will store and supply clean water to students, teachers, and school staff, fostering good hygiene and lowering the incidence of water-borne illnesses.
  • "India will provide funding support of 700,000 USD from the India-UN Development Partnership Fund for the project, "Motufoua concrete water cistern" as requested by the Government of Tuvalu," the statement read.May this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the "Sagar Amrut Scholarship" scheme for the Pacific Island countries, at the Summit of the Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation.

Iraq bans media from using term 'homosexuality', says they must use 'sexual deviance'

  • Iraq's official media regulator on Tuesday ordered all media and social media companies operating in the Arab state not to use the term 'homosexuality' and instead to say 'sexual deviance,' a government spokesperson said and a document from the regulator shows.
  • The Iraqi Communications and Media Commission (CMC) document said that the use of the term 'gender' was also banned. It prohibited all phone and internet companies licensed by it from using the terms in any of their mobile applications.A government official later said that the decision still required final approval.The regulator "directs media organisations ... not to use the term 'homosexuality' and to use the correct term 'sexual deviance'

Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni Appoints Hun Manet- as the New Prime Minister

  • Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni appointed former Prime Minister Hun Sen's son - Hun Manet- as the new Prime Minister of the country. A royal decree was issued by the King stating that he appointed Hun Manet as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia for the 7th mandate of the parliament.
  • While the King appointed Hun Manet as the PM, the leader and his cabinet must win the confidence vote to assume office.
  • During the Cambodian Elections 2023, Hun Sen's party - the Cambodian People's Party, won with a landslide victory.

  •  Hiroshima Day is observed on August 6 to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, at the end of World War II.
  • The horrific incident took place on August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb named "Little Boy", on the town of Hiroshima in Japan. 2023 marks the 78th anniversary of the world's first atomic bombing.
  • The day, which is observed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Japan, highlights the effects of nuclear wars, pays respect to those who got killed, discourages nuclear proliferation and promotes world peace.

Pak court ordered Ex-PM Imran be put in Adiala Jail not Attock Prison.

  •  Imran Khan awoke on Sunday as an inmate in the high-security Attock prison in Attock city but should have been in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, according to the order issued by an Islamabad trial court that found the former Pakistan Prime Minister guilty in a corruption case.
  • Mr. Khan, 70, was arrested from his home in Lahore on Saturday shortly after being convicted and sentenced to three-year imprisonment in the Toshakhana corruption case.
  • According to the court order, additional district and sessions judge Humayun Dilawar ordered the Islamabad police chief to arrest the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, instead it was the Punjab police that arrested Mr. Khan.
  • The court also ordered the Adiala jail superintendent to receive Khan, who was taken to Attock jail amid tight security.
  • The court order issued for the inspector general of police (IGP) Islamabad said: "This is to authorise and require you the I.G. Islamabad Police to arrest the convict Imran Khan Niazi son of Ikramullah Khan and to send him to Central Prison Adyala, Rawalpindi, for serving out the stated sentences," the Dawn newspaper reported.
  • "This is to authorise and require you the said superintendent to receive the said convict Imran Khan Niazi into your custody in the said jail, together with this warrant for serving out the stated sentences," said another court order issued for the Adiala jail superintendent.
  • However, Mr. Khan was neither arrested by the capital police nor detained at Adiala jail, the report said.

Pakistan Approves New Security Pact with US

  • Pakistan's Cabinet approved the signing of a new security pact with the US, a move that indicates a fresh start in defence cooperation after years of distrust between the two nations and may open avenues for Islamabad to get military hardware from Washington.
  • Through a circulation summary, the Cabinet gave its seal of approval to sign the Communication Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement, known as the CIS-MOA, between Pakistan and the US.
