Raksha Mantri Participates in SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting in China

  • Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh led a high-level Indian delegation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' Meeting held at Qingdao, China. During the meeting, the Defence Ministers discussed a number of issues, including regional and international peace & security, counter-terrorism efforts and cooperation among the Ministries of Defence of SCO member states.
  • India refused to sign joint statement in the SCO summit
  • SCO is an inter-governmental organisation established in 2001. India became a full member in 2017 and assumed the rotating Chairmanship in 2023. The SCO membership includes Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus, besides India. China assumed the Chair of the SCO for 2025 under the theme 'Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move'.

Operation Bashayer Al-Fath, Iran Answers Operation Midnight Hammer

  • Iran launched Operation Bashayer Al-Fath against the United States in response to Operation Midnight Hammer. As a part of the military operation, Iran attacked the US Al-Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar, a day after Washington bombed its three nuclear sites.
  • The Iranian Armed Forces further stated that the message of this decisive action is clear for the White House that Tehran will not leave its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security unanswered under any circumstances.

China, Pakistan and Bangladesh Hold First Trilateral Meeting

  • China, Pakistan and Bangladesh held their first trilateral meeting involving senior foreign ministry officials and discussed ways to boost cooperation. The meeting took place in Kunming, the capital of China's southern Yunnan province.
  • This was the second trilateral dialogue that China launched in India's neighbourhood, following a similar meeting between the Foreign Ministers of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan last month (May 2025).
  • The meeting in Kunming was attended by China's Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, Bangladesh's Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique and Pakistan's Additional Foreign Secretary Imran Ahmed Siddiqui. Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch took part in the first part of the discussions by video link.

  • The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, now in its 19th edition, remains the world's leading measure of national and regional peacefulness. Developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the index offers invaluable insight into the peacefulness of 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the global population. In a world experiencing an uptick in geopolitical instability, the GPI serves as a crucial indicator of current global trends in conflict, safety, and militarisation.
  • The Global Peace Index is an annual quantitative analysis that evaluates peace based on 23 indicators across three main domains:
  • Societal Safety and Security
  • Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict
  • Degree of Militarisation
  • Top 10 Most Peaceful Countries in 2025 are: Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland.
  • Iceland has retained its position as the world's most peaceful country since 2008, credited to its low crime rates, stable politics, and lack of military forces.

  • The Pentagon execution Operation Midnight Hammer, a highly classified military operation launched by the United States against Iran's nuclear infrastructure. The operation came just days after President Donald Trump scrapped a self-imposed two-week deadline, signaling a dramatic shift in U.S. posture toward Tehran.
  • The operation specifically targeted three key Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The mission was described as deliberate, precision-based, and strategically coordinated, designed to severely degrade Iran's capacity to develop nuclear weapons.

US Senate Passes Stablecoin Bill in Milestone for Crypto Industry

  • The U.S. Senate passed a bill to create a regulatory framework for U.S.-dollar-pegged cryptocurrency tokens known as stablecoins, in a watershed moment for the digital asset industry.
  • The bill, dubbed the GENIUS Act, received bipartisan support, with several Democrats joining most Republicans to back the proposed federal rules. It passed 68-30. The House of Representatives, which is controlled by Republicans, needs to pass its version of the bill before it heads to President Donald Trump's desk for approval.

South Korea Gets Ahn Gyu-back as First Civilian Defence Minister in 64 Years

  • South Korean President Lee Jae Myung nominated, Ahn Gyu-back, a five-term liberal lawmaker as Defence Minister, breaking with a tradition of appointing retired military generals.
  • Ahn Gyu-back, a lawmaker from Lee's Democratic Party, has served on the National Assembly's defence committee and chaired a legislative panel that investigated the circumstances surrounding Yoon's martial law decree.

UN Member Countries Finalise the Compromiso de Savilla Outcome Document

  • UN Member States reached agreement on the outcome document for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, to be formally adopted at an upcoming summit in Sevilla, Spain – though without the participation of the United States, which withdrew from the negotiations and announced it will not attend the conference.
  • Member States at UN Headquarters endorsed the finalised outcome document, known as the Compromiso de Sevilla (the Seville Commitment), following months of intensive intergovernmental negotiations. It is intended as the cornerstone of a renewed global framework for financing sustainable development, particularly amid a widening $4 trillion annual financing gap faced by developing countries.
