Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to expel the U.S., German and eight other Western Ambassadors after they issued a rare joint statement in support of a jailed civil society leader.
Parisian-born philanthropist and activist Osman Kavala, was in jail without a conviction since 2017, becoming a symbol of what critics see as Mr. Erdogan's growing intolerance of dissent.
The 10 Ambassadors issued a highly unusual joint statement on their Turkish social media accounts — saying Mr. Kavala's continued detention "cast a shadow" over Turkey.
Turkey Joins Pakistan in FATF Grey List
Global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan on its 'Grey List' of countries. In a briefing, FATF president Marcus Pleyer also said that three new countries Turkey, Jordan, and Mali have also been added to the Grey List. In June this year, the FATF had retained Pakistan on its 'Grey List' for failing to check money laundering, leading to terror financing.
The FATF asked Islamabad to investigate and prosecute UN-designated terror terrorists including Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar. It also asked Pakistan to work to address its strategically important deficiencies.
Pakistan was placed on the Grey List by the FATF in June 2018. Since then, Pakistan continues to be in the list due to its failure to comply with the FATF mandates. Due to its placing on the Grey List, it has become increasingly difficult for Pakistan to get financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Union.

The World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index 2021 report shows that Pakistan is among the lowest ranked countries in its adherence to the rule of law, ranking 130th out of 139 nations. Scores range from 0 to 1, with 1 indicating the strongest adherence to the rule of law. Pakistan managed a poor 0.39 score.
Even in South Asia, Pakistan's position is second last. Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh all have performed better than Pakistan in the rule of law category whereas only Afghanistan is rated below Pakistan in the region.
The report shows Pakistan doing badly in the areas of corruption, fundamental rights, order and security and regulatory enforcement. In these areas Pakistan is the second worst in the region.
Pakistan to Stay on 'Grey List'
Pakistan will continue to be on the 'Grey List' of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) as it needs to "further demonstrate" that action is being taken against UN-designated terrorists like India's most wanted Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, and groups led by them, the global body against terror financing said.
FATF president Marcus Pleyer said that the decision has been taken at the conclusion of the virtual plenary of the organisation. On the action plan of Pakistan, Paris-based FATF requires it to demonstrate terror financing investigation and prosecution of leaders and commanders of UN-designated terrorist groups and their associates.
The Financial Action Task Force, is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1989 on the initiative of the G7 to develop policies to combat money laundering. In 2001, its mandate was expanded to include terrorism financing.
The FATF Secretariat is located at the OECD headquarters in Paris.

Biden Picks Donald Armin Blome as Pakistan Envoy
The United States will have a full-time ambassador in Pakistan for the first time in over three years as President Joe Biden named Donald Armin Blome, a career diplomat, as the country's new envoy to Islamabad.
The appointment of Blome, currently serving as the US ambassador to Tunisia, as top US diplomat to Pakistan suggests a positive development in the context of Pakistan-US ties that has often been marred by mistrust.
The absence of a full-time ambassador was seen as an effort by the US to downgrade its ties with Pakistan, which are considered crucial for Afghanistan and the overall regional security.
However, the appointment of Blome marks a shift in US policy towards Pakistan. This also indicates that there may be some positive movement in the relationship, following the recent contacts between the two countries.
The nomination of the new ambassador comes just days after US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman visited Pakistan, underlining the fact that despite differences on certain issues the US still considered Pakistan important at least in the context of Afghanistan.
