China Breaks US Space Record with 9-Hour Long Spacewalk

  • China broke the US-held record for the world's longest spacewalk after two of its astronauts completed a nine-hour spacewalk. Chinese astronauts Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, aboard the Tiangong space station, wrapped the nine-hour extravehicular activity (EVA), also known as a spacewalk, at 9.57 pm.
  • The earlier record was held by US astronauts James Voss and Susan Helms, who spent eight hours and 56 minutes outside the space shuttle Discovery during a mission to the International Space Station on March 12, 2001.

Japan-India Collaboration on Space Debris Removal

  • Two space start-ups, namely India's InspeCity and Japan's Orbital Lasers, partnered to explore using lasers on satellites to clear space debris.
  • Their goal is to develop system where a laser removes or moves old and dangerous space junk to keep space safer.
  • The collaboration will examine Orbital Lasers' technology, which employs laser energy to stabilise space debris by vaporizing small portions of its surface.

EU Launches Iris2 Space Programme to Challenge Elon Musk's Starlink

  • The European Union launched a €10 billionn (£8.3 billion) space programme called Iris2, aiming to build a network of 290 satellites to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink. This ambitious project is designed to strengthen Europe's control over its communications and offer secure connections for governments and military operations amidst rising cybersecurity threats.
  • Using advanced technology, Iris2 will provide a system equivalent to 1,000 satellites, operating in both medium Earth orbit and low Earth orbit. This will ensure widespread coverage for defence, internet services, TV, weather updates, and border surveillance across Europe.
  • Leading European companies like Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space, and Telespazio will be key contributors to the project.

Google's Quantum Leap: Unveiling the Revolutionary 'Willow' Chip

  • Google introduced Willow, a groundbreaking quantum chip poised to revolutionize computing and scientific discovery. This chip achieves two significant milestones: exponential error reduction with more qubits and completing a computation in five minutes that would take current supercomputers 10 septillion years—exceeding the universe's age. Willow marks a major advance in Google's decade-long pursuit of a scalable quantum computer capable of addressing complex global challenges.
  • Willow addresses a critical challenge in quantum computing—qubit error correction. By scaling up qubits, the chip reduces errors exponentially, a problem researchers have struggled with for three decades.
