West Indies Batter Lendl Simmons Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • West Indies batter Lendl Simmons announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The right-hand batter from Trinidad made his debut for the West Indies in 2006, and went on to play 136 One-Day and Twenty20 international matches. Simmons was a part of West Indies' T20 World Cup winning sides in 2012 and 2016.
  • His last appearance for the team came during the T20 World Cup in the UAE in October 2021.
  • Simmons averaged 31.58 in the 50-over format, and 26.78 in T20Is. His figure in Tests is an unimpressive 17.37.

Asian Games Delayed by 12 Months to Avoid Conflict with other Sporting Events

  • China will host the 2022 Asian Games in autumn 2023, after postponing the event in Hangzhou because of Covid-19.
  • The Games were originally scheduled for September this year, but organisers postponed them in May as China tried to stamp out a large Covid resurgence in several parts of the country.
  • The event will now be held in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8 2023, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said.
  • Hangzhou lies less than 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the country's biggest city Shanghai, which endured a months-long lockdown earlier this year as part of the ruling Communist Party's zero-tolerance approach to the virus.

Former Supreme Court judge Vineet Saran Appointed BCCI Ethics Officer

  • Former Supreme Court judge Vineet Saran took over as the BCCI's ethics officer and ombudsman, filling the dual posts lying vacant for a year.
  • Saran succeeded Justice (Retd) D. K. Jain, whose term ended in June 2021.
  • Saran is a former Chief Justice of Odisha High Court, and also served as a judge in Karnataka and Allahabad High Court.

Former West Indies Captain Ramdin Retires from International Cricket

  • Former West Indies skipper Denesh Ramdin announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.
  • Ramdin played his last match for West Indies in a T20I in December 2019. However, he will continue to play franchise cricket.
  • He has played 74 Tests, 139 ODIs and 71 T20Is. He started out in Test cricket, making his debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2005.
  • Ramdin led West Indies in 17 matches – 13 Tests, three T20Is and an ODI after he was named West Indies' Test captain in 2014, taking over from Daren Sammy, who had retired from the format. Jason Holder replaced him at the helm in 2015.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan of India Writes History by Winning gold Medal in Skeet

  • Two-time Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan created history and became the first Indian shooter to win the gold medal in the men's skeet event at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea.
  • Mairaj Ahmad Khan recorded 37 hits out of a possible 40 in the final to win gold. South Korea's Minsu Kim struck 36 for silver while Ben Llewellin of Great Britain won bronze with 26 hits.

Dutch Domination Continues in Women's Hockey

  • The Netherlands women's hockey team beat Argentina 3-1 in the final to win its ninth World Cup title. It was the third consecutive title for the Dutch, who also have four Olympics gold. Australia beat Germany 2-1 to win bronze.
  • Heading into the fifteenth edition of the World Cup, Netherlands were the reigning champions and had won more women's World Cups than any other nation.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Wins 5th World 100m Title in Eugene, Oregon

  • Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her record fifth world 100m title in Eugene, Oregon, leading an unprecedented Jamaican clean sweep of the podium.
  • Fraser-Pryce had an electric start and led from gun to tape, winning in a championship record of 10.67 seconds.
  • Shericka Jackson took silver in a personal best of 10.73sec, with four-time Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah claiming bronze (10.81).
  • Fraser-Pryce is also the first athlete to ever win five gold medals in a track event at the World Championships in the same discipline, with this win following 100m gold in 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2019.

England All-rounder Ben Stokes Announces Retirement from ODI Cricket

  • Star England all-rounder Ben Stokes made a surprise announcement to retire from ODI cricket.
  • He played his last ODI against South Africa at his home ground in Durham.
  • Stokes' ODI career would forever be remembered for his Player-of-the-Match performance in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord's.
  • His unbeaten 84 helped to send the match into a Super Over as England claimed their first 50-over World Cup title in the most thrilling of circumstances.
  • Stokes, who is England's Test captain, has scored 2919 runs in 104 ODIs and taken 74 wickets.

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Announces Retirement from T20 Internationals

  • Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from T20 Internationals following his side's 50-over series win against the West Indies.
  • He played 78 T20 Internationals, scoring 1758 runs at 24.08.
  • In January, Tamim had taken a six month break from the shortest format but he did feature in a domestic tournament during that period.
  • Tamim is one of the best openers to have come out of Bangladesh, having scored 5082 runs in Tests and 7943 runs in ODIs.

P.V. Sindhu Wins Singapore Open 2022

  • India's badminton star P.V. Sindhu thrashed China's Wang Zhiyi in the final of the Singapore Open 2022. She defeated Zhiyi 21-9 11-21 21-15 in the summit clash.
  • Sindhu is the second Indian women's shuttler, and third Indian overall, to win the Singapore Open title. Saina Nehwal (2010) and B. Sai Praneeth (2017) have earlier lifted the title in women's and men's singles, respectively.

Nithya Wins Gold, Bhagat Silver in Para Badminton

  • India's Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan won the gold medal in the women's singles SH6 class, while world No. 1 Pramod Bhagat finished runner-up in the men's singles SL3 category in the 4 Nations Para Badminton International in Dublin. The mixed doubles pairing of Chirag Baretha and Mandeep Kaur settled for silver in the SL3-SU5 classification.

Tokyo to Host 2025 World Athletics Championships

  • Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, the sport's governing body announced.
  • The event would return to the site of last year's Olympic Games in the year that the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) celebrates its centenary.
  • Nairobi, Silesia and Singapore had also bid for the championships, while Budapest will host the 2023 version.
  • Tokyo held the event in 1991, highlighted by the incredible world-record-breaking long jump duel between gold medallist Mike Powell and Carl Lewis, while it was also held in Japan in 2007 with Osaka hosting.
  • This year's (2022) Championships, delayed from 2021, begin in Oregon.

  • India topped the medals tally at the ISSF Shooting World Cup after a string of fantastic performances by its shooters.
  • India finished the tournament with eight medals, three gold, four silver and a bronze, were way ahead of hosts South Korea and Serbia on the medals table.
