Indian Women's Compound Archery Team Strikes Gold, Mixed Team Bags Silver in World Cup

  • The Indian women's compound trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Swami grabbed their third successive Archery World Cup gold medal, while the mixed team added a silver at the stage two event in Yecheon (South Korea). The world number one Indian compound women's team dominated Turkey's Hazal Burun, Ayse Bera Suzer and Begum Yuva right from the first end and sealed the gold without dropping a set, maintaining a healthy six-point margin (232-226) in a lopsided final.
  • Asian Games champion Jyothi, however, failed to add a second gold to her kitty as she along with Priyansh squandered an opening round lead to go down to the USA's Olivia Dean and Sawyer Sullivan by two points (155-153) in the compound mixed team final.

PV Sindhu Enters Semifinals of Malaysia Masters Badminton Tournament

  • In Badminton, PV Sindhu stormed into the Women's Singles semifinals of Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur today morning. The two-time Olympic medalist defeated Han Yue of China, 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 in the quarter-final.
  • However, in another women's singles quarter final, Ashmita Chaliha of India bowed out losing to Zhang Yi Man of China, 10-21, 15-21.
  • In other categories, India's campaign has already ended in the Round of 16. Kiran George lost to Malaysia's Zii Jia Lee in Men's Singles, while in the Men's Doubles, Sai Pratheek and Krishna Prasad Garaga also lost to Chinese pair of Ren Xiangyu and Ji Ting He. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were defeated by Sung Shuo-yun and Chen Yu of Taiwan in Women's Doubles.

Sachin Khilari Defends Gold at World Para Athletics, India Surpasses Best-ever Tally

  • India's Sachin Sarjerao Khilari defended his gold medal in the men's shot put F46 category with an Asian record at the World Para Athletics Championship as the country surpassed its best-ever haul in the global competition.
  • India, now have 11 medals, five of them gold. They bettered their previous best tally of 10 (3 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze) in the 2023 edition in Paris.

Chandru G Wins WBC India Cruiserweight Championship

  • Chandru G from Tamil Nadu recently beat Jaskaran Singh from Punjab and won the WBC India National title in the Cruiserweight Division. At the Pro Boxing Fight Night in Hyderabad, the fight, which ended with a knockout in the fourth round, was the main event.

Virat Kohli Becomes First Batter to Reach 8000 Runs in IPL History

  • Virat Kohli broke yet another record in Indian Premier League (IPL) history as he became the first batter to score 8000 runs in the Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals.
  • Kohli, who enjoyed his second-most prolific season in the league with over 700 runs after that iconic 2016 season where he scored 973, has scored one century and 5 fifties in the 2024 edition. His batting form is also one of the biggest reasons that RCB came back from the abyss to qualify from the play-offs and is also the current Orange Cap holder.

Archery World Cup: Compound Archers One Win Away from WC Stage II Glory

  • The world No. 1 Indian women's compound team stormed into the final of the archery World Cup Stage II in Yecheon, South Korea but the men's team will return empty-handed after losing the bronze medal clash to Australia.
  • The trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Swami, which had clinched gold medal in the World Cup Stage I in the Shanghai leg last month (April), knocked out world No. 4 USA 233-229 in their semi-final.

T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan Announce Former CSK Star as Bowling Consultant

  • Afghanistan announced former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo as their bowling consultant for the T20 World Cup 2024. The T20 WC, scheduled to start from June 1, is being hosted jointly by the USA and Caribbean. Afghanistan is placed in Group C with New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and West Indies.

World Para Athletic C'ships 2024: Ekta Wins Gold with Season's Best Effort in Club Throw

  • India's Ekta Bhyan secured the gold medal with a season's best throw of 20.12m in the women' F51 club throw competition at the World Para Athletic Championships.
  • A day after Deepthi Jeevanji clinched the gold medal in women's 400m T20 category race, Indian athletes continued their impressive run with Ekta producing the goods to finish in the top, while Kashish Lakra took the silver with an effort of 14.56m.
  • Ekta, a Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer, had won a bronze medal in the Asian Para Games China.
  • She who took up sports after her selection in the Haryana government as HCS officer, also won gold medal in the club throw event at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. She had also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Deepthi Jeevanji Wins Gold with World Record Time in World Para

  • Deepthi Jeevanji won India's first gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships 2024 in Kobe, Japan when she won in the women's T20 400 m event. She clocked a world record of 55.07 seconds.
  • Earlier Deepthi qualified for the finals setting a new Asian record with a time of 56.18 seconds and secured a Paris 2024 Paralympics quota.
  • Deepthi smashed American Breanna Clark's earlier world record of 55.12 seconds set during last year's edition of the championships in Paris.

Zverev Wins 6th Masters Title at Italian Open

  • Alexander Zverev warmed up for the French Open by winning his sixth Masters title when he beat first-time finalist Nicolas Jarry 6-4 7-5 in the Italian Open showpiece. It was a second title in Rome for Zverev, having won his first in 2017 when he was 20, and his first trophy since he broke his ankle in the French Open semi-finals in 2022.
  • The 27-year-old will also climb to fourth in the rankings as he slowly returns to his best ahead of Roland Garros. "Obviously winning my first ever (Masters title) here and winning my first after injury, so Rome is a very special place for me. It is a very, very special week," third seed Zverev said.

No Trials for Wrestlers, All Six Quota Winners to Participate in Olympics

  • The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) decided to not hold the trials to select the Indian team for the Paris Olympics. Many of the wrestlers who have earned the quotas for the country requested the federation to avoid holding the trials as it may lead to injuries.
  • Among those who have written to the WFI are Aman Sehrawat (57kg), the lone freestyle wrestler to qualify, Anshu Malik (57kg) and Nisha Dahiya (68kg). Significantly, the WFI officials led by new president Sanjay Singh had all but decided to hold the trials following in the footsteps of the previous body.

Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Clinch Gold Medals at Elorda Cup in Kazakhstan

  • Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi clinched gold medals as the Indian team concluded their Elorda Cup 2024 campaign with 12 medals in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Besides Nikhat and Minakshi's gold medals, Indian boxers won two silver and eight bronze medals to better their last edition's record of five medals.
