CM Yogi Adityanath Participates in Campaign to Create World Record

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath participated in a campaign to create a world record for Vande Mataram singing and uploading its video on YouTube. As many as 1.5 lakh people became part of this campaign, according to the district administration. So far, the record is in the name of an England-based organization that uploaded 20,000 videos. 
  • ADM Finance and Revenue Rajesh Singh told Zee News that the scrutiny of the video has started from the Guinness Book of World Records. As per the standard practice, the exact number of videos being uploaded will be announced officially.

India Slips Two Positions in EIU's Democracy Index

  • India slipped two places to 53rd position in the 2020 Democracy Index's global ranking, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit, which said the "democratic backsliding" by authorities and "crackdowns" on civil liberties has led to a further decline in the country's ranking.
  • However, India is ranked higher than most of its neighbouring countries. India's overall score fell from 6.9 in 2019 to 6.61 in the index that provides a snapshot of the current state of democracy worldwide for 167 countries. "With mounting pressure on India's democratic norms, India's score fell from a peak of 7.92 in 2014 to 6.61 in 2020 and its global ranking slipped from 27th (in 2014) to 53rd as a result of democratic backsliding" under the current regime.
  • Norway topped the report titled "Democracy in sickness and in health?", with Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Canada making up the top five.

India at UNSC Backs a Balanced Approach on Myanmar

  • India has called for a balanced approach on Myanmar at the United Nations Security Council meeting that took place on Tuesday even as the UK-backed draft is still being considered. New Delhi's balanced approach, which has been perceived as a very constructive one, calls for support for the democratic process in the country, given it is a neighbouring country. 
  • The UNSC has not yet been able to come up with any statement on the coup in the country when the meeting took place on February 2. In the aftermath of the bloodless coup staged by the military in Myanmar, India's Ministry of External Affairs in a statement had expressed its "deep concern", calling for upholding of the "rule of law and the democratic process".

BJP Appoints Election in-charges for Puducherry, 3 Poll-bound States

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced election in-charges for three poll-bound states and Union Territory of Puducherry that will pick new assemblies in the next few months.
  • Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar has been appointed the election-in-charge for Assam while Union minister of state (MoS) in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh has been given the additional charge.
  • The BJP leadership also appointed MoS for home affairs G. Kishan Reddy as the in-charge for Tamil Nadu and Dr. VK Singh as the deputy in-charge.
  • Prahlad Joshi, Union minister for parliamentary affairs will oversee elections in Kerala and deputy CM of Karnataka, Ashwath Narayan will be the deputy in charge. For Puducherry, the party has named Union minister of state for Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and parliamentary affairs Arjun Singh Meghwal as in-charge and national spokesperson Rajeev Chandrasekhar as the deputy.

PFRDA Allows Aadhaar-based Online, e-KYC to Open NPS Account

  • The Pension Funds Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) allowed online Aadhaar e-KYC process for onboarding of new subscribers under the National Pension System (NPS).
  • The permission given by Dept of Revenue to perform online e KYC shall further simplify the process of account opening since the process offers the Subscribers a unique experience of NPS Digital Journey.
  • Last year in May, the regulator had allowed Aadhaar-based offline paperless KYC (Know Your Customer) for onboarding of new subscribers under the pension plan. The process helped in immediate activation of NPS accounts following instant KYC verification and also immediate deposit of NPS contribution by the subscriber.

AAP Launches Campaign "Uttarakhand me bhi Kejriwal"

  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) senior leader and deputy chief minister of Delhi launched a mass outreach campaign named "Uttarakhand me bhi Kejriwal (Kejriwal in Uttarakhand too)" to prepare for the 2022 assembly polls in the state.
  • During the event, Sisodia flagged off 70 vans with five party workers each. The vans will travel to each of the 70 constituencies and AAP members will hold a total of 6,500 public meetings in the next 45 days with a target to add one lakh new party members in the state.
  • The senior AAP leader alleged that the BJP and Congress have taken turns to exploit the state in the last 20 years while depriving its people of development.

  • The Binoy Tamang faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which is in charge of Darjeeling's autonomous administrative body, demanded the formation of a national statutory body, to be named All India Gorkha Assembly, for the development of Gorkhas across India.
  • The Tamang faction of the GJM is an ally of West Bengal's ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC).
  • The All India Gorkha Assembly should be formed by amending the Constitution. The proposed body will not operate within any designated geophysical area. It will be a pan-India statutory development body and all elected people's representatives from the community should be its members.
  • "The Indo Bhutan Treaty of 1949 and Indo Nepal Friendship Treaty of 1950 should be reviewed to grant constitutional justice to Gorkhas," said Tamang.

Ramesh Pokhriyal Addresses the ASEAN India Hackathon

  • The Union Education Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal addressed the ASEAN India Hackathon.
  • Pokhriyal highlighted that, The ASEAN-INDIA Hackathon was inaugurated to further strengthen the India and ASEAN ties.
  • The background of the India-ASEAN hackathon lies in the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's call during the India-Singapore hackathon in the year 2019.
  • The common challenges of the countries are categorsed under two themes namely the "Blue Economy" and "Education".
  • The hackathon provides an opportunity to take forward the economic and cultural ties of both ASEAN and India through their collaboration in education, science and technology.
  • The hackathon will help in the enactment of six fundamental virtues of our civilisation namely, dialogue, respect, peace, cooperation, prosperity and innovation.
  • The ASEAN-INDIA Hackathon initiative is undertaken by the Ministry of Education. In the year 2021, the hackathon is being organized online from February 1 to 3, 2021. The hackathon will offer new opportunities for all the 10 ASEAN countries and India to strengthen their economic and cultural ties by collaborating into the fields of education, science and technology.

Maharashtra Tops Justice Delivery in India Justice Report 2020

  • The second edition of the India Justice Report, India's only ranking of states on delivery of Justice to people, was announced. Maharashtra once again at the top of the 18 Large and Mid-sized states (with a population of over one crore each) in the 2nd Edition of the India Justice Report, an initiative of Tata Trusts, followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Punjab, and Kerala.
  • Through a rigorous 14-month quantitative research, the India Justice Report 2020 once again tracks the progress states have made incapacitating their justice delivery structures to effectively deliver services to all. It takes account of latest statistics and situations as they existed prior to March 2020. It brings together otherwise siloed statistics from authoritative government sources, on the four pillars of Justice delivery–Police, Judiciary, Prisons and Legal Aid.
  • The India Justice Report (IJR) is an initiative of Tata Trusts in collaboration with Centre for Social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, DAKSH, TISS–Prayas, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and How India Lives. The maiden IJR was announced in 2019.

Nadda Affirms BJP-AIADMK Poll Alliance in Tamil Nadu

  • The BJP announced the pre-poll alliance with the AIADMK and like-minded parties in Tamil Nadu.
  • BJP chief JP Nadda made the announcement regarding formalisation of the alliance in Madurai.
  • The Assembly elections are expected in April or early May.

Rajasthan ULB Polls

  • The ruling Congress has won 1,197 out of 3,034 wards in 90 urban local bodies in Rajasthan for which the results were announced. 
  • The elections were held in 3,035 wards of 90 urban local bodies across 20 districts. The results have been announced in 3,034 wards.
  • The opposition BJP won 1,140, BSP 1, CPI(M) 3, NCP 46, RLP 13 wards while 634 independent candidates won the elections.
  • Polling in the local bodies was held in Ajmer, Banswara, Bikaner, Bhilwara, Bundi, Pratapgarh, Chittorgarh, Churu, Dungarpur, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jalore, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Pali, Rajsamand, Sikar, Tonk and Udaipur districts.

Delhi Congress Unit Passes Resolution to Make Rahul Gandhi Party President

  • The Delhi Congress has passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi president of the party with immediate effect and in the process become the first state unit to start the campaign "Rahul Returns". 
  • AICC Incharge Shakti Singh Gohil passed a resolution in a meeting consisting of the senior leaders. In a meeting held at PCC Office, the resolution was passed unanimously which was proposed by Delhi Congress Chief Anil Chaudhary.
  • After the resolution was passed, Chaudhary said that being a president of the Delhi Unit he has seen the sentiments of Delhi Congress workers and supporters for Rahul Gandhi that only he can fight against the ruling party, BJP.

Kunwar Manvendra Singh Acting Chairman of UP Legislative Council

  • Kunwar Manvendra Singh administered the oath of office as the acting chairman of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. The oath was administered by Governor Anandiben Patel at a function held at Raj Bhavan.
  • The tenure of incumbent chairman Ramesh Yadav ended on January 30.
  • Singh was among the 10 BJP and two Samajwadi Party candidates who were elected unopposed to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on January 21.
  • Kunwar Manvendra Singh was earlier the acting chairman of UP Legislative Council from May 2002 to August 2004.

SC Collegium Withdraws Approval for Appointment of Justice Pushpa Ganediwala as Permanent Judge

  • The Supreme Court Collegium has withdrawn its approval to a proposal for the appointment of an additional judge of the Bombay High Court, Justice Pushpa Ganediwala, as a permanent judge of the court following her two controversial verdicts in sexual assault cases.
  • The decision was taken after the judge faced flak for her interpretation of sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
  • The collegium headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, at a meeting held on January 20, had okayed the proposal for making Justice Ganediwala a permanent judge.
  • She was a panel advocate for various banks and insurance companies and was also an honorary lecturer in various colleges of Amravati and gave lectures to the MBA and LLM students of the Amravati University.
  • She was directly appointed as a district judge in 2007 and was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on February 13, 2019.
