Gujarat Launches Web Portal, App to Help Unorganised Sector Workers

The Gujarat government launched a web portal and a mobile application to facilitate online registration of workers from the unorganised sector to give them smart cards for availing various welfare schemes.
The 'e-Nirman' portal and its mobile App were launched by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, a government release said, adding that 9.20 lakh workers from the unorganised sector were already registered and given U-WIN cards in the state.
Since workers have to forgo their day's work to get themselves registered after visiting the designated office, the state government decided to launch this online platform.
With the e-Nirman portal and mobile App, the government can monitor a worker's data in real-time and it will be directly linked to the 'CM Dashboard' application.

Telangana High Court Bench Strength Increases

In one of the biggest jumps, the Bench strength of a High Court, the number of judges in the Telangana High Court has been increased with immediate effect from 24 to 42 judges after the Centre agreed to it.
The decision is aimed at dealing with huge pendency of cases in the Telangana High Court where 2.37 lakh cases await disposal.
Out of 42 judges, 32 will be Permanent Judges and 10 will be Additional Judges. Twenty-eight of the judges will be from the Bar quota and the rest 14 will be judicial officers promoted under service category.
The proposal to increase the Bench strength of Telangana High Court – which had been pending for approval with the Centre since February 2019 – was revived by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana after he took over as the CJI on April 24 this year.

BJP Announces Candidates for Mayor, Deputy for Delhi Municipal Elections

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Adesh Gupta announced the names of the party's candidates for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor for municipal elections in the national capital.
Raja Iqbal Singh, Mukesh Suryan and Shyam Sunder Aggarwal are the candidates for the post of Mayor from the north, south and the east corporations respectively.
The names of candidates for the post of deputy mayor are Archana Dilip Singh for North Delhi, Pawan Sharma for South Delhi and Kiran Vaidh for East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The names for the post of chairman and vice-chairman of standing committees in the civic bodies were also announced.
Candidates for Chairman for north, south and east are Jogi Ram Jain, Col (retd) BK Oberoi and Veersingh Panwar respectively and for Vice-Chairman the candidates are Vijay Kumar Bhagat (NDMC), Poonam Bhati (SDMC) and Deepak Malhotra (EDMC).

Ladakh Notifies Recruitment Rules 2021

Ladakh administration has formulated new rules under which jobs would be reserved exclusively for locals.
According to the notification, the rules formulated by Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur shall come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
As per the notification, no person shall be qualified for appointment to the service unless the person is a resident of Union Territory of Ladakh.
The notification also underlined that persons who have already been appointed substantively to a post in the cadre of Jammu and Kashmir Employment (Subordinate) Service and finally allotted for service in the Union territory of Ladakh in accordance with the provisions of section 89(2) of the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019, shall be deemed to have been appointed to the Service at the initial constitution.

Senior Congress Pradesh Jitin Prasada Joins BJP

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader from Uttar Pradesh Jitin Prasada joined BJP in the presence of Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Rajya Sabha member Anil Baluni at party headquarters. The move came as a big jolt to the Congress party at least eight months ahead of the assembly elections in 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Sources in the BJP said that he may be asked to contest the upcoming state assembly polls in 2022 and that he might play a role in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress had earlier in 2019 survived a scare of Jitin Prasada switching sides to BJP after Jyotiraditya Scindia succeeded in stopping him from doing so. However, Scindia later joined BJP in March 2020.

Kannur Congress Veteran K. Sudhakaran to be Party President

Barring any last minute hiccups, decks have been cleared for Kannur Congress veteran K. Sudhakaran to be appointed as the new party president of Kerala.
Mullapally Ramachandran has put in his papers after the April 6 assembly polls debacle.
Sudhakaran is a four time legislator and is presently in his second term as Lok Sabha member from Kannur -- the citadel of the CPI-M.

Swapan Dasgupta, Mahesh Jethmalani, Others Take Oath as RS Members

BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta and three others took oath as members of the Upper House in the presence of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.
Besides Dasgupta, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, journalist John Brittas and CPI(M) leader V. Sivadasan also took oath.
Brittas and Sivadasan are newly elected members whereas Jethmalani was nominated and Dasgupta was re-nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

India's First Mobile CNG Refuelling Unit from IGL-Mahanagar Gas Launched

India's first CNG Mobile Refuelling Unit (MRU) was inaugurated by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The MRU was developed by Indraprastha Gas (IGL) and Mahanagar Gas.
Pradhan also inaugurated 201 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the country during the ceremony which was conducted virtually.

Anup Chandra Pandey Appointed as New Election Commissioner

Former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Anup Chandra Pandey has been appointed as the Election Commissioner. According to the notification, President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed the retired Indian Administrative Service Officer (IAS) of the 1984 batch as the Election Commissioner.
Pandey who retired as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh in August 2019, will join the poll panel as one of the two Election Commissioners, the other is Rajiv Kumar.
The Election Commission comprises a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners. Currently, Sushil Chandra is the Chief Election Commissioner. The vacancy in the Election Commission was created on April 12, when Chandra was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner after the term of his predecessor Sunil Arora came to its end.

TMC to Spread Footprint across India

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that his party aimed to spread its footprint in every nook and corner of the country and a plan to this effect would be ready in a month's time.
Banerjee, nephew of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, also said that his party would take the BJP head-on in every state where it gets to gain a foothold. Banerjee, meanwhile, said party leaders were reaching out to the BJP to facilitate the return of saffron party workers, who had fled their homes fearing attack by TMC workers post-elections.

BJP Wants Dalhousie Renamed as Netaji Nagar

A controversy has erupted in Himachal Pradesh over a proposal to rename Dalhousie, a famous hill station in Chamba district, as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Nagar, a demand made by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and being opposed by the Congress.
Swamy wrote to state Governor Bandaru Dattatreya in this regard. The town is named after Lord Dalhousie, who was the Governor General of India during the British rule.
In 1992, the BJP government under CM Shanta Kumar had even issued a notification renaming the town, but the subsequent Congress regime withdrew it.

India Elected to UN Economic and Social Council for 2022-24 Term

India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, for the 2022-24 term.
The 54-member Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.
It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.
India was elected in the Asia-Pacific States category along with Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Oman.

Rajasthan Govt. Suspends Jaipur Greater Mayor

The Rajasthan government suspended the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation mayor and three councilors for allegedly misbehaving with the local body's Commissioner, a move that angered the BJP.
The Congress government also decided to conduct a judicial inquiry in the matter.
The Department of local self-governance issued the orders suspending mayor Somya Gurjar, and councilors Ajay Singh Chauhan, Paras Jain (all three from the BJP), and Shankar Sharma (independent) for allegedly manhandling, pushing and abusing the Commissioner.

Chhattisgarh Reshuffles 29 IAS Officers, Including 9 District Collectors

In a major reshuffle the Chhattisgarh government transferred 29 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers including nine district collectors.
District collectors of Raipur, Rajnandgaon, Janjgir-Champa, Korea, Balrampur-Ramanujganj, Dhamtari, Korba, Mungeli and Bemetara districts have been changed.

India Slips Two Spots on 17 Sustainable Development Goals

According to a report, India's rank has slipped by two places from last year to 117 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted as a part of the 2030 agenda by 193 United Nations member states in 2015.
The State of India's Environment Report 2021 revealed that India's rank was 115 last year and dropped by two places primarily because major challenges like ending hunger and achieving food security (SDG 2), achieving gender equality (SDG 5) and building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation (SDG 9) remain in the country.
India ranks below four South Asian countries—Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, it said. The overall SDG score of India is 61.9 out of 100.
As per the report, Jharkhand and Bihar are the least prepared to meet the SDGs by 2030, which is the target year. While Jharkhand lags in five of the SDGs, Bihar lags in seven.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

Country's First E-vehicles-only Area in Gujarat's Kevadia

Development and Tourism Governance Authority (SOUADTGA) said it will develop the "country's first electric vehicles-only area" in Gujarat's Kevadia.
The authority said that the area surrounding the 182-metre tall Statue of Unity in Kevadia in Gujarat's tribal-dominated Narmada district will be converted into an electric-vehicles-only area in a phased manner.
The announcement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Kevadia, which houses the world's tallest Statue of Unity, will become the country's first electric vehicle city.
Kevadia-headquartered SOUADTGA is empowered to execute development plans and manage tourism in the area around the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
