Preeti Janghiani Chosen Vice President of Asian ArmWrestling Federation

  • Preeti Jhangiani, president of the People's ArmWrestling Federation India (PAFI) etched her name in history by becoming vice-president of the Asian ArmWrestling Federation.
  • The announcement was made at the Asian Arm Wrestling Federation Congress which took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, during the World Arm Wrestling Cup. Preeti was unanimously voted by all the countries present at the Congress and is now part of the executive council of the Asian ArmWrestling Federation.
  • Preeti has worked for the growth of ArmWrestling in India by collaborating with state governments and sports associations in all corners of India and conducting various state championships and mega matches in association with the Pro Panja League.

India's Only ICC Elite Umpire Opts out of Champions Trophy in Pakistan

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a list of 15 match officials, including three match referees and 12 umpires for the Champions Trophy 2025.
  • However, the tournament will have no Indian match official. India pace great Javagal Srinath was the only Indian in the ICC Elite panel of match referees, while Nitin Menon was the lone Indian in the ICC Elite panel of umpires.
  • The ICC wanted to put him (Menon) on the Champions Trophy roster. But he decided against travelling to Pakistan due to personal reasons.

Former Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep Announces Retirement

  • Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, announced her retirement from competitive tennis. The Romanian player ended her career after attempting a comeback that was affected by injuries following a doping ban.
  • Halep's remarkable career highlights encompass victories at Wimbledon 2019 and the French Open 2018, along with 24 WTA singles titles and over $40 million in prize money.

WPL 2025: Ash Gardner Replaces Beth Mooney as Gujarat Giants Captain

  • Gujarat Giants appointed Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner as the team captain for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 season.
  • Gardner took over from her compatriot Beth Mooney who led the side in the first two seasons of the WPL. In both editions, Gujarat finished bottom of the five-team league, winning only two games apiece in 2023 and 2024.

Jonathan Clinches air Pistol Gold at National Games

  • Fifteen-year-old Bengaluru shooter Jonathan Antony delivered a grand performance on the biggest domestic stage when he outwitted Paris Olympics bronze-medallist Sarabjot Singh and the more fancied Saurabh Chaudhary to clinch the 10m air pistol gold at the National Games in Uttaralkhand.
  • Jonathan, whose shooting career took wings when he won gold in the CBSE South Zone Rifle Shooting Competition in 2022 while studying in eighth standard, shot a superb 240.7 for Karnataka in the final and overcame the challenge of Services veterans Ravinder Singh (silver, 240.3) and Gurpreet Singh (bronze, 220.1) and Sarabjot, who won a bronze in the Paris Olympics' 10m air pistol mixed team event with Manu Bhaker last year (2024).

Tripura Announces Bhagwan Birsa Munda Tournament

  • To promote sports, curb drug addiction and acknowledge tribals' contributions to the nation, the Tripura government announced the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2025, an inter-hostel competition with the slogan "football is game, drugs are shame".
  • Tribal Affairs Minister Bikash Debbarma said that this tournament is being organised to stop tribal youths from going wayward, especially since our government is working with the slogan 'nashamukt Tripura'.
  • The tournament, which runs from February 5 to 8, features 16 teams, eight each of boys and girls.
  • The tournament offers a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a trophy for the champions in both boys and girls categories, while the first and second runners-up will receive Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000, respectively. A cash prize of Rs. 25,000 will be awarded for fair play, along with awards for the best player, best scorer and best goalkeeper.

Rashid Khan Becomes Highest T20 Wicket-taker

  • Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan climbed to the top of the wicket-taking charts in all T20 cricket when he scalped his a record 632nd wicket in the format during the SA20 Qualifier 1 match for MI Cape Town against Pretoria Capitals.
  • Rashid dismissed Dunith Wellalage and surpassed former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo's tally of 631 wickets in 89 fewer innings in his 461st T20 match since making his format debut in a T20I for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in October 2015.

Hina Munawar Appointed First Female Manager for Pakistan Men's Cricket Team

  • In a historic move, the Pakistan Cricket Board or PCB appointed Hina Munawar as the first-ever woman operations manager for the national men's cricket team.
  • Munawar, an experienced police officer with a strong background in operations and security, will oversee team operations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Tri-Nation Series.
  • While senior retired bureaucrat Naveed Akram Cheema will continue as team manager, Munawar's appointment has sparked curiosity amongst cricket fans, experts, and the media.
  • Munawar, who joined the PCB last year (2024), was also appointed manager of the Pakistan women's under-19 team for the Asia Cup.

  • Travis Head and Annabel Sutherland won Australian cricket's top individual honours for the first time, with momentous Test knocks punctuating their outstanding years.
  • Head convincingly won the Allan Border Medal, becoming the first South Australian to claim the award.
  • Sutherland won the Belinda Clark Award days after becoming the first woman to score a Test ton at the MCG.

R. Praggnanandhaa Wins Tata Steel Chess Masters

  • Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa won the Tata Steel Masters 2025, beating World Champion D. Gukesh in a thrilling tiebreak in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand in 2006 to win the top prize at the Tata Steel Masters.

Fixing Allegations Leads to Removal of Taekwondo Competition Director from National Games

  • Two days before the taekwondo competition was to start at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, the competition director was removed because of fears of alleged competition manipulation.
  • The Prevention of Manipulation of Competition Committee (PMC) had also received complaints that some officials of the Taekwondo Federation of India had already fixed the result in 10 of the 16 weight categories. "The asking price is Rs. 3 lakh for a gold medal, Rs. 2 lakh for silver and Rs. 1 lakh for bronze," the IOA said that it was informed.
  • The Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) based on strong recommendations of a three-member PMC removed T. Praveen Kumar as director of competitions. He was replaced by S. Dinesh Kumar.
