IPL 2025: Kevin Pietersen Named Delhi Capitals Mentor

  • Former England captain Kevin Pietersen was named the Delhi Capitals mentor for the IPL 2025 season. Pietersen will be seen in a coaching assignment for the first time in the IPL since last featuring as a player in the league in 2016.
  • Pietersen played for three IPL teams across five seasons from 2009, including Delhi (then Daredevils). He also led in 17 matches in the IPL. After leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru briefly in IPL 2009, Pietersen captained Daredevils in 2014 when they finished at the bottom of the league table with only two wins.

Sports Ministry Introduces New Course to Help Elite Athletes Become Coaches

  • Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched a special 'Capacity Building Course' in collaboration with Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala for current and former elite sports persons in an effort to help India produce more home-grown coaches and officials.
  • The course has been designed and developed for athletes who are currently employed and serving in various central government or autonomous departments, organisations under central government or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
  • The eligibility criteria for this course are participation or medal winner in Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
  • The medal winners of Youth Olympics, Junior World Championship, World University Games, senior National Championship and National Games can enrol for the course.

IOC Grants Provisional Recognition to Global Body World Boxing

  • In a major boost for boxing, the International Olympic Committee granted provisional recognition to World Boxing. It is a major step towards the sport's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
  • The IOC conducted the boxing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics after it de-recognised the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2023 due to problems in governance and finance. IOC banned IBA, run by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, in 2019 over governance, finance, refereeing and ethical issues and did not involve it in running the boxing events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, before stripping it of recognition in 2023, an extremely rare move by the IOC.
  • The IOC has not included the sport in the LA 2028 programme yet, having urged national boxing federations to create a new global boxing body or risk missing out on the Olympics in three years.
  • World Boxing was launched in 2023 and has now 78 members across five continents.

Ibrahim Zadran Breaks All-time Champions Trophy Record

  • Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran broke ICC Champions Trophy's all-time record for the highest individual score when right hander slammed a majestic 177 against England in a crucial Group B fixture at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
  • Ibrahim Zadran surpassed England's Ben Duckett who had scored 165 against Australia earlier in the tournament. In fact, Ibrahim Zadran also became Afghanistan's first-ever centurion in Champions Trophy history.

Mohun Bagan Clinch Back-to-Back ISL Winners Shield

  • Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured its second consecutive Indian Super League (ISL) Winners Shield with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Odisha FC at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. The match remained tense until the final moments when Dimitrios Petratos struck the winning goal in injury time, making Mohun Bagan the first team in ISL history to defend the Shield successfully. This win also ensures their direct qualification for the AFC Champions League 2.
  • With this victory, Mohun Bagan has now won its seventh national league title, reinforcing its reputation as one of India's most successful football clubs.

Rachin Ravindra Becomes New Zealand's Leading Century-scorer in ICC ODI Events

  • Rachin Ravindra became New Zealand's most successful batter in the ICC ODI events by toppling the record of scoring most centuries for the Blackcaps.
  • Rachin now boasts four centuries in ICC ODI events, the most by any New Zealand player. He surpassed icons Kane Williamson and Nathan Astle, who have three centuries each in ICC ODI events.

Saurav Ghosal Marks Triumphant Return with Sydney Title

  • Indian squash legend Saurav Ghosal marked a sensational return from retirement by clinching the Octane Sydney Classic title. The former World No. 10 had retired from the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour in April 2023 but continued to express his desire to represent India. In January 2025, he rejoined the PSA Tour, keeping his aspirations alive. In a dominant performance, the second seed outclassed Egypt's Abdelrahman Nasser in straight sets in the final and claimed victory.

Andreeva Wins Title

  • Mirra Andreeva made history by becoming the youngest player to claim a WTA 1000 title after the 17-year-old won the Dubai Tennis Championships.
  • The Russian beat Clara Tauson 7-6 (7-1) 6-1.
  • Andreeva defeated Grand Slam winners Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina on her way to the final.

Asia Cup Archery: India Tops Medal Tally with 8 Medals, Including 5 Gold

  • India topped the medal standings at the first leg of the Asia Cup World Ranking Archery Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, securing eight medals, including 5 gold, at the conclusion of competitions.
  • In the recurve men's section, India's Vishnu Choudhary and Rahul finished 1-2.
  • The other four gold were won by Basanti Mahato (women's recurve), Kushal Dalal (men's compound), men's recurve team of Vishnu, Goldi Mishra and Rahul, and the men's compund team of Kushal, Manav Ganeshrao Jadhao and Ganesh Mani Ratnam.
  • The recurve mixed team of Basanti and Vishnu also picked up a silver, while the women's compound team of Avneet Kaur, Madhuravarshini Muruganantham and Chikitha Taniparthi clinched a bronze.

Dalibor Svrcina Wins Maha Open ATP Challenger 100 Men's Championship

  • Czech Republic's Dalibor Svrcina beat USA's Brandon Holt and won the men's singles title in the Maha Open ATP Challenger 100 men's tennis championship.
  • It has been a solid run for Dalibor Svrcina in the three ATP Challenger events in India. He made the semi-finals in Chennai and the second round in Delhi.
  • The Maha Open 2025 was an ATP Challenger 100 tennis tournament played on hard courts.

Manu Bhaker to Lead 35-member Shooting Team to World Cups in South America

  • Ace pistol shooter Manu Bhaker is set to lead a 35-member Indian contingent at the ISSF World Cups in South America, starting April 1, 2025 and concluding on 22, marking the beginning of the international shooting season. The squad comprises nearly all the shooters who participated in the Paris Olympics, ensuring a strong representation on the global stage.
  • Almost all the shooters who featured in the Paris Olympics made the cut. A notable member of the team is air pistol ace Saurabh Chaudhary, who returns to the national side after more than three years.
