AIFF Withdraws Bid to Host 2027 AFC Asian Cup

  • India withdrew its bid to stage the 2027 AFC Asian Cup with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) declaring that hosting big-ticket events is not among its strategic priorities at this juncture.
  • India and Saudi Arabia were the only two countries left as bidders to host the 2027 continental showpiece after nations such as Iran and Uzbekistan pulled out of the race in October 2022.
  • India's bid was launched amid much fanfare in 2020 when Praful Patel was the AIFF president but the current dispensation under Kalyan Chaubey feels "building the foundations of football structure" through grassroots and youth development was more important than hosting big events.

Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh Lift Mixed Team Pistol Title at Shooting Nationals

  • Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won the 10m air pistol mixed team title at the 65th National Shooting Championship Competitions (NSCC) at the MP Shooting Academy range in Bhopal, venue of the Pistol shooting events.
  • The Haryana duo trounced Karnataka's Divya T.S. and Imroz 16-4 in the gold medal encounter.
  • Manu and Sarabjot had earlier topped the qualification round as well with a combined score of 575, where the Karnataka pair had finished second with 573 to setup the title clash. Punjab and ONGC shared the bronze medals.
  • In the junior mixed team pistol, the gold was won by Uttar Pradesh's Anjali and Sagar, when they beat Uttarakhand's Yashsavi and Abhinav 18-16 in the gold medal match. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh won the bronze medals.

Arjun Erigaisi, Rameshbabu Vaishali Emerge Champions in Tata Steel Chess India

  • Arjun Erigaisi clinched the Blitz title finishing ahead of Hikaru Nakaumura on the concluding day of the Tata Steel Chess India.
  • The Indian teenager finished with 12.5 points, one ahead of the American wizard after clinching the issue in the penultimate round with a splendid comeback.

Vijay Hazare Trophy Final: Saurashtra Beat Maharashtra by 5 Wickets

  • Saurashtra beat Maharashtra by 5 wickets in the final to win the Vijay Hazare Trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. They restricted Maharashtra at 248/9 in 50 overs as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hit a century, scoring 108 off 131 balls after a slow start. Saurashtra bowler Chirag Jani claimed a hat-trick in the match. Man of the match was Sheldon Jackson.
  • Chasing the target of 249, Saurashtra started off cautiously before the openers stitched a 125-run partnership. Batter Shledon Jackson held one end as wickets tumbled around him. He scored a match-winning 133 off 136 balls to help Saurashtra chase down the target in 46.3 overs, with five wickets to spare. It was Saurashtra's second title triumph in history.

Unnati Hooda First Indian to Enter U-17 Women's Singles Final of Badminton Asia Junior Championships

  • Rising shuttler Unnati Hooda became the first Indian to enter the U-17 women's singles final of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Nonthaburi, Thailand after beating Japan's Mion Yokouchi in straight games.
  • Unnati won 21-8, 21-17 over her Japanese rival in the women's U-17 singles semi-finals. She lost to Sarunrak Vitidsarn of Thailand in the gold medal match.

Third T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament for Blind to be Held in India

  • The third T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament for the Blind is being held from December 5 to 17 in India.
  • The participating nations for World Cup 2022 are Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the host, India. Around 150 players would be participating from all the countries in the tournament, which has a total of 24 matches, will take place in nine cities in India.
  • The tournament is being organised to mark the World Disability Day celebrations universally. The inauguration of the World Cup on December 5 at Tau Devi Lal Indoor Stadium, Gurugram. Former India batter Yuvraj Singh is the brand ambassador of the tournament.
  • The World Cup, an initiative of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) in association with Samarthanam Trust for the disabled, has been organising this championship since 2012.

Netherlands Eliminates US by 3-1 to Enter FIFA World Cup Quarter-finals

  • Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scored in the first half and Denzil Dumfries added a late goal as the Netherlands eliminated the United States from the World Cup with a 3-1 victory Saturday that advanced the Dutch to the quarter-finals.
  • Second-half subsitute Haji Wright cut the U.S. deficit to 2-1 in the 76th minute when Christian Pulisic's cross hit his trailing foot and popped over goalkeeper Andries Noppert and into the net. But Dumfries, who assisted on the first two goals, scored on a volley in the 81st.

Shooter Rudrankksh Patil Clinches ISSF President's Cup in Egypt

  • Indian shooter Rudrankksh Patil concluded the 2022 season with a bang, clinching the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) President's Cup held in Cairo, Egypt.
  • He defeated Italy's Danilo Sollazzo in the 10 m rifle play-off by 16-8.
  • Athletes from 42 nations representing 43 ISSF Member Federations from all continents qualified to take part in this competition. They were all among the 12 top-ranked in individual Olympic events as per the 2022 World Ranking.

Dwayne Bravo Retires from IPL, Appointed CSK Bowling Coach for 2023 Edition

  • Chennai Super Kings appointed Dwayne Bravo as the team's bowling coach ahead of IPL 2023. Bravo called time on his playing days in the IPL, having played the tournament since the inaugural edition in 2008. L. Balaji has taken a break for one year due to personal commitments, but will be available for the Super Kings Academy.
  • Bravo has 183 wickets from 161 matches. The all-rounder has also scored 1560 runs at a strike rate of around 130, playing key parts in many victories for the Super Kings. He was an integral part of CSK's IPL title wins in 2011, 2018 and 2021 and the Champions League T20 victory in 2014. He was also the first player to win the Purple Cap for most wickets in an IPL season twice (2013 and 2015).
  • Bravo has overall played 144 matches for Chennai Super Kings, picking up 168 wickets and scoring 1556 runs.

Malhotra, Paranjape Named in New Cricket Advisory Committee

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a fresh Cricket Advisory Committee. Former selectors Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik were named in the panel, which is expected to take the big call on the new selection panel for men's cricket.
  • The BCCI pulled the plug on the earlier selection panel under the guidance of Chetan Sharma, who were responsible for the selection of the India squad that went to 2021 T20 World Cup, Asia Cup 2022 and the recently concluded T20 World Cup in Australia. India suffered shock 10-wicket defeats in both of their last two World Cup outings, one against Pakistan and one against England.

England Make History in Pakistan by Scoring 506-4 on Day One

  • England posted a world record as they smashed a mammoth 506/4 on Day 1 of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, led by Crawley (122 off 111), Duckett (107 off 110), Pope (108 off 104) and Brook (101no off 81).
  • Crawley and Duckett, stitched together 174 runs in the first session, the most by any team. The previous record was held by India, who posted 158 against Afghanistan back in 2018. The duo went on to add 233 runs for the first wicket, becoming the quickest opening stand to cross 200 runs (off 181 deliveries).
  • First time in England's Test history, both openers scored 50 off 50 balls or less. While Crawley crossed the mark of 38 deliveries, Ben Duckett, who also scored a century on the day, completed his half century off exactly fifty deliveries.
  • England's total of 506 was the first time a team crossed the 500 run mark on day one of a Test match, eclipsing the previous highest first day total which was held by Australia, who posted 494/6 on day one of the Sydney Test against South Africa in December 1910.
