Won't be Part of Turf War in Indian Ocean: Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe

  • Sri Lanka will not take part in any "big power rivalry" in the Indian Ocean and it is unfortunate that his country has been made the "punching bag" for Hambantota, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said, weeks after India and China clashed over the docking of a high-tech Chinese ship at the country's southern port. Wickremesinghe said that the Indian Ocean region needs to be open to all to ensure freedom of navigation.

Swedish PM Magdalena Andersson Announces Resignation after Losing Election

  • Sweden's Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced her resignation after losing the election.
  • Andersson, also leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, conceded defeat at a press conference following the election.
  • She handed in her resignation notice after it emerged that the opposition blue bloc consisting of the Moderate Party, the Christian Democrats, the Liberal Party and the Sweden Democrats, had won 176 of the 349 seats in parliament.
  • Meanwhile Andersson's red bloc, consisting of her Social Democratic Party, the Left Party, the Green Party, and the Centre Party, won 173 seats.

Iran Signs Formal MoU to Join SCO

  • Iran signed a memorandum of commitments to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), giving boost to India's focus on an inclusive connectivity agenda in the Eurasian region that would function parallel to China's Belt and Road Initiative.
  • Iran and the SCO started a formal process for Tehran's accession to the bloc in March. Iran's membership was later approved by the Iranian administration. Iran would attend the SCO as a full member from the Summit to be hosted by India in 2023.
  • Iran is central to India's plan to increase engagement with Russia and Central Asia, besides the remaining part of Eurasia.

World Water Congress and Exhibition 2022 Held in Copenhagen

  • The 2022 World Water Congress & Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark, engaged stakeholders and key contacts within the conventional water sector and beyond. Held from 11-15 September, 2022, the event brought together core water sector groups, such as those focused on urban water and urban water services, as well as participants from industry and agriculture, architects and urban planners, soil and groundwater experts and hydrologists, social scientists, the ICT sector, the financial sector, and others.
  • The Congress reported on the water sector progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The emphasis was on SDG6, which is dedicated to water and sanitation. The event also highlighted and explored the interwoven relation of water with all 17 of the global SDGs. The World Water Congress was organised by the International Water Association (IWA).

President Murmu to Join 500 World Leaders at Queen's Funeral in London

  • President Droupadi Murmu will be among an estimated 500 world leaders and foreign dignitaries, including kings and queens and heads of state and government, who will attend Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 19.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the President's three-day UK visit as India's head of state invited for the state funeral in London. It marks the first state funeral in the UK in 57 years, last held at the Abbey for Britain's war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965.

Dr. Renee Wegrzyn Appointed as the Director of ARPA-H

  • The US President Joe Biden appointed Dr. Renee Wegrzyn as the inaugural director of the ARPA-H (Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health).
  • Dr. Renee Wegrzyn, is a biologist and former government scientist.
  • The ARPA-H Director's tenure would last for five years.
  • The purpose of the ARPA-H is to seek innovative solutions to biomedical problems.

'Village Boy' William Ruto Sworn in as Kenya's President

  • William Ruto was sworn in as Kenya's President after narrowly winning the August 9 election in East Africa's most stable democracy.
  • The Supreme Court had rejected a challenge by losing candidate and long-time opposition figure Raila Odinga of the official results, completing a markedly peaceful election in a country with a history of troubled ones.
  • Ruto had been the deputy to outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta.
