Stubb Wins Finnish Presidential Election

  • Alexander Stubb of the centre-right National Coalition Party narrowly won Finland's presidential election, defeating liberal Green Party member Pekka Haavisto, who conceded defeat.
  • Stubb is pro-European and a strong supporter of Ukraine who has taken a tough stance towards Russia.
  • He declared himself winner in the run-off vote after securing 51.6% of the votes as 99.7% of ballots had been counted, against Haavisto's 48.4%, justice ministry data showed.

Miss World Pageant to Take Place in India

  • The much anticipated 71st edition of Miss World will be held in India from February 18 to March 9.
  • Miss World pageant, which will be held in India after nearly three decades, will attract participants from 120 countries. Festivities will begin on February 18, with early rounds in Delhi, leading up to the grand finale on March 9 in Mumbai. Miss World Organisation CEO Julia Morley expressed her deep affection for India.

S. Jaishankar Attend Indian Ocean Conference in Perth

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the inaugural session of the 7th Indian Ocean Conference in Perth, Australia. The two-day Indian Ocean Conference was held with the theme of 'Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean'. The Conference is a flagship consultative forum for countries in the Indian Ocean Region, organised annually by the Ministry of External Affairs since 2016, in association with the India Foundation.
  • S. Jaishankar was joined by Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his counterparts from Australia and Singapore. The Conference featured ministers from over 22 countries and senior officials from 16 countries and 6 multilateral organisations.

  • El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, won a thumping victory in elections after voters cast aside concerns about erosion of democracy to reward him for a fierce gang crackdown that transformed security in the central American country.
  • This victory saw the biggest difference between first and second place in history.
  • He is serving as President of El Salvador since June 1, 2019.

Sri Lanka Pursues Free Trade Agreements with India to Boost Economic Growth

  • Sri Lanka, facing economic challenges and seeking to spur growth, plans to establish free trade agreements (FTAs) with several countries including India by the end of 2024. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry outlined the government's strategy to address the nation's economic woes.
  • Sri Lanka aims to finalise an FTA with India by the end of 2024, alongside similar agreements with Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and China.
  • These agreements are intended to open new markets for Sri Lankan businesses, contributing directly to economic growth.
  • Talks on the Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement between Sri Lanka and India resumed in Colombo in October last year after a hiatus since 2018.
