J&K to Host G-20 Meeting in 2023

  • In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir will be hosting the 2023 meetings of G-20, an influential grouping that brings together the world's major economies, with the Union Territory government setting up a five-member high level committee for overall coordination.
  • This will be the first major international summit to be held in Jammu and Kashmir after the erstwhile state's special status guaranteed under Article 370 of the Constitution was withdrawn and it was divided into two union territories in August 2019.
  • India will hold the G20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and will convene the G20 leaders' summit in 2023 for the first time.

Rajasthan Takes Pole Position for Health Insurance Coverage

  • The Rajasthan government's focus on the health sector took the state to top position in the country in regard to health insurance coverage.
  • The National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21) states 88 per cent of the households have at least one member covered by a health scheme or health insurance in Rajasthan. The national figure is 41 per cent.
  • In NFHS-4 (2015-16), the health insurance coverage of households in Rajasthan was 19 per cent while it was 29 per cent for India.
  • This happened mainly due to the initiative of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, whose priority is to ensure all citizens of the state can avail themselves of free treatment at a hospital near them. He launched a health insurance scheme called Mukhyamantri Chiranjeevi Swasthya Bima Yojna on May 1, 2021.

Suspend Fencing: Manipur to Centre after Protests on Myanmar Border Demarcation

  • The Manipur government asked the Union Home Ministry to suspend the border fencing project on a stretch of the Indo-Myanmar border after fresh protests near Kangla Fort in state capital Imphal over the boundary demarcation between border pillars (BP) 81 and 82.
  • He also asked the Centre to depute a team of officials from the home ministry and Survey of India to hold a thorough discussion regarding position of the disputed BPs while border fencing continues in other undisputed areas.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Vanijya Bhawan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new premises of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Vanijya Bhawan in the national capital. The Vanijya Bhawan, which is constructed near the India Gate, is designed as a smart building which incorporates the principles of sustainable architecture with a special focus on energy saving. It will serve as an integrated and modern office complex that will be used by the two Departments under the Ministry, the Department of Commerce and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
  • As per reports, the Prime Minister also launched a new portal-- National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade (NIRYAT).
  • NIRYAT is developed as a one-stop platform for the stakeholders to get all the necessary information related to India`s foreign trade.

Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena Suspends Deputy Secretary in CM Arvind Kejriwal's Office, 2 SDMs

  • Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena ordered the suspension of the deputy secretary in Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal`s office and two sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) over corruption charges. Prakash Chandra Thakur posted as deputy secretary in the Chief Minister`s office, Vasant Vihar SDM Harshit Jain, and Vivek Vihar SDM Devender Sharma were suspended and disciplinary proceedings were ordered against them. The lieutenant governor had ealier also suspended two assistant engineers of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) after finding lapses in the construction of EWS flats in Kalkaji Extension.

Ration Card Portability Implemented across India with Assam Being Last to Operationalise

  • The government's 'One Nation, One Ration Card' (ONORC) programme was successfully implemented across the country, with Assam being the last state to operationalise the service. Under ONORC, beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) can get their quota of subsidised foodgrains from any electronic point of sale device (ePoS)-enabled fair price shops of their choice by using their existing ration cards with biometric authentication.
  • According to the Food Ministry, ration card portability has significantly contributed in ensuring subsidised foodgrains to NFSA beneficiaries, especially migrant beneficiaries, during the last two years of Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Currently, a monthly average of about 3 crore portable transactions are being recorded, delivering the subsidised NFSA and free PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana) foodgrains with anywhere flexibility to the beneficiaries.

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Heading Towards Dissolution

  • Amid the intensifying political crisis in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut hinted at the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.
  • Back-to-back meetings of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are taking place in Mumbai over the rapidly changing political developments in the state.
  • This came after 40 Maharashtra MLAs including 33 Shiv Sena and seven independent MLAs exhorted their support to rebel Shiv Sena leader and state Cabinet Minister Eknath Shinde by signing a letter.

R. Kavita Rao Appointed as Director of NIPFP

  • Eminent economist R. Kavita Rao took charge as the director of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) for a five-year term.
  • Rao replaced Pinaki Chakraborty.
  • Rao was working as a professor at NIPFP. She holds a Masters in Economics degree from Delhi School of Economics and a PhD from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta.

Draupadi Murmu is the NDA's Candidate for the Upcoming Presidential Elections

  • After hectic deliberations, the BJP central leadership picked Draupadi Murmu as the NDA's candidate for the upcoming presidential elections 2022 which will be held on July 18. Murmu, a former Governor of Jharkhand and a former Odisha minister, is pitted against the opposition's joint candidate Yashwant Sinha, a former BJP leader and a former Union Minister who quit the saffron party several years ago after being apparently sidelined.
  • The Narendra Modi-powered BJP is comfortably placed in the electoral college with a vote value of 10.86 lakh although it lacks nearly 2 per cent of votes for a majority.

MoHUA NIPUN Initiative

  • An Innovative project called "National Initiative for Promoting Upskilling of Nirman workers (NIPUN) was launched by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri.
  • The NIPUN Initiative was launched for skill training of 100,000 construction workers.
  • It was launched under the flagship scheme of "Deendayal Antyodaya-Yojana National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM)".
  • Under the scheme, construction workers would be trained through fresh skilling and upskilling programs. This move will provide work opportunities to them in foreign countries also.
  • Implementation of NIPUN project is divided into the following three parts: Training by means of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at construction sites, Training through Fresh skilling by Plumbing and Infrastructure SSC and International Placement through builders, industries, and contractors.

Ruchira Kamboj Appointed as Next Permanent Representative of India to UN

  • Ruchira Kamboj, currently Indian ambassador to Bhutan, was named as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York. She will succeed T.S. Tirumurti.
  • T.S. Tirumurti, who was given a three-month extension in service after his retirement in March in view of his key role in dealing with the fallout of the Ukraine crisis at the UN Security Council. India is in the second year of a two-year term as a non- permanent member of the Security Council.
  • Kamboj was the all India women's topper of the 1987 civil services batch and the topper of the 1987 IFS batch. She has served in various capacities in Indian missions in France, Mauritius and South Africa and as the high commissioner to South Africa during 2017-19.

Presidential Election: Yashwant Sinha is Opposition Candidate

  • Yashwant Sinha, a former Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, was named the joint opposition candidate for President polls. The BJP is yet to announce its pick for the July polls.
  • Opposition leaders, who gathered at the Parliament annexe for the meeting convened by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, unanimously agreed on Mr Sinha's name.
  • The joint statement appealed to the BJP and its allies to support the candidature of Mr. Sinha so that the nation can have a "worthy Rashtrapati elected unopposed".
  • A committee has been formed to steer Yashwant Sinha's campaign.
  • Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had earlier declined to run for President.

Presidential Poll: Gopalkrishna Opts Out

  • The Opposition was back to the drawing board on the issue of fielding a joint candidate for the July 18 presidential election with Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, opting out of the race saying a candidate for the highest office must inspire national consensus besides opposition unity.
  • Gopalkrishna pulled out on the eve of a key Opposition meeting NCP chief Sharad Pawar hosted to finalise the presidential election nominee of the non-BJP camp.
  • The TMC is now said to be mulling the name of its vice-president Yashwant Sinha as a probable candidate after Gopalkrishna and NC patron Farooq Abdullah opted out.

PM Inaugurates Fully Electrified KRCL Rail Network

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi remotely inaugurated the 741-km electrified Konkan Railway Corporation rail network from Bengaluru. Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje said in Udupi that the project is a step towards 100% electrification of the Indian Railway network.
  • Ms. Karandlaje, who is the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and also MP from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency, led the celebrations at the Udupi Railway Station under KRCL.
  • Speaking after flagging off an electric loco-hauled freight train, the Minister said that with the complete electrification between Thokur near Mangaluru and Roha in Maharashtra, KRCL will save close to Rs.300 crore annually, apart from saving Rs.150 crore on fuel and a further Rs.120 crore on maintenance cost.

New Delhi Hosts National Summit on Cyber Security and National Security

  • At Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital, the Ministry of Home Affairs organised a National Conference on Cyber Safety and National Security (Cyber Apradh Se Azadi, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav). Union Minister Amit Shah was the Chief Guest. The seminar was part of the country's efforts to raise public awareness about cybercrime prevention.
  • The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, held functions on Cyber Hygiene, Cyber Crime Prevention, Cyber Safety, and National Security at 75 locations across the country under the banner "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav". The Union Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Development of the North Eastern Region, G. Kishan Reddy, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Kumar Mishra, and senior officials from the Ministries of Home Affairs, Culture, and States and Union Territories, as well as representatives from various organisations, were all be present at the conference.
