Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz Beats Novak Djokovic in Straight Sets to Defend Title

  • Spain's Carlos Alcaraz beat Serbian Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in straight sets at SW19 and defended his Wimbledon men's singles title. Third-seed Alcaraz had won his maiden Wimbledon title in 2023 after beating Djokovic in the final.
  • With the win, Alcaraz became only the fourth player in the Open Era to win four grand slams before turning 21. The other three are Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.
  • He had previously won the US Open 2022 before winning the Championships a year later. He also won the French Open 2024 earlier this year.
  • The Wimbledon Championships, commonly called Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, with retractable roofs over the two main courts since 2019.

Euro 2024: Spain Beatd England to Win Record fourth European Title

  • Spain beat England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 Final in Berlin, Germany and won its record fourth European championship title. Spain is now the first team to have four Euro titles, breaking the tie with Germany which also has three titles.
  • Spain had previously won the continental championship in 1964, 2008 and 2012. England, on the other, hand lost their second Euro final on the trot after losing to Italy in 2020 on penalties.

Argentina Wins Record 16th Copa America

  • Lautaro Martinez powered an Argentina side sans captain Lionel Messi to the Copa America 2024 title with his extra-time winner over Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
  • In a charged final where the match ended goalless in regulation time, Martinez came on in the 97th minute replacing striker Julian Alvarez. He powered home the winning goal from a quick counter-attack in the 112th minute. Martinez the Inter Milan forward also secured the Golden Boot with his fifth goal of the tournament.

James Anderson Ends Test Career with 704 Wickets

  • Greatest fast bowler James Anderson's Test career ended with England's win over West Indies by an inning and 114 runs in the first Test at the Lord's in London. Anderson bows out as the third-highest wicket-taker with 704 wickets, the most for a pacer in the format's history. However, the star of this match was debutant Gus Atkinson, who picked 12 wickets, including a seven-wicket haul in the first innings and a five-for in the second.

Saudi Arabia to Host Inaugural Olympics Esports Games in 2025, Confirms IOC

  • Saudi Arabia will host the inaugural Olympics Esports Games in 2025, the International Olympic Committee announced. The IOC said that the partnership with the Saudi National Olympic Committee would be for 12 years.
  • The decision will be ratified at the IOC Session to be held on the eve of the Olympic Games in Paris, after which work will begin on selecting a host city for the inaugural edition.
