Korean Fusion Reactor 'Artificial Sun' Sets New Record
Scientists in South Korea set a new world record using the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device, an 'artificial Sun' nuclear fusion reactor. During tests conducted they generated plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius for a duration of 48 seconds.
This temperature is seven times that of the sun's core, which is 15 million degrees Celsius.
Nuclear fusion seeks to replicate the reaction that makes the sun and other stars shine, by fusing two atoms to unleash huge amounts of energy. Fusion has the potential to provide limitless energy without planet-warming carbon pollution.

125 Years of Kodaikanal Solar Observatory
Perched atop the picturesque Palani Hills in Tamil Nadu, the iconic Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO) commemorated a remarkable milestone – its 125th anniversary of studying the celestial body that sustains life on Earth, the Sun. On April 1, 2024, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, organised a grand celebration to honour the legacy of this historic observatory and felicitate the scientists who dedicated their lives to advancing our understanding of our star.
Established on April 1, 1899, by the British, the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory has been a cradle of groundbreaking research in solar astrophysics for over a century. Throughout its illustrious history, the observatory has been the birthplace of numerous pathbreaking discoveries that have profoundly impacted our perception of the Sun and its intricate workings.

Astronomical Union Names Asteroid 'Jayantmurthy' after Indian Scientist
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) named an asteroid after India's Professor Jayant Murthy, a distinguished scientist known for his work on the interstellar medium, ultraviolet astronomy, and space missions.
The asteroid, previously catalogued as 2005 EX296, was officially designated as (215884) Jayantmurthy. This honour was announced by the IAU's Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature, the authority responsible for naming small objects in the Solar System.
Prof Murthy, who retired from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in 2021 and has since served as an Honorary Professor, was the acting Director of the institute from July 2018 to October 2019.
The asteroid (215884) Jayantmurthy was discovered by MW Buie at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA, in 2005.

Gaia Telescope Discovers Two Ancient Streams of Stars Shiva & Shakti
The European Space Agency's Gaia space telescope made a groundbreaking discovery, uncovering two ancient streams of stars named Shiva and Shakti. Led by Khyati Malhan of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Germany, this revelation significantly enhances our understanding of the Milky Way's origins.
Each cluster comprises about 10 million suns, with stars aged 12 to 13 billion years, displaying remarkably similar orbits and structures.
Situated towards the galaxy's heart, these streams were formed as separate fragments that merged into one galaxy early in its history, shedding light on the Milky Way's early formation.
Launched in December 2013, Gaia, operated by the European Space Agency, has been surveying the skies for over a decade, collecting extensive data to create a detailed 3D map of the Milky Way.
