Shubman Gill Records Highest Score by an Indian Captain

Skipper Shubman Gill's classic maiden double hundred carried India to a formidable 587 all out in their first innings against England on the second day of the second Test . Gill (269 off 387 balls) led India's batting charge as there were two other notable run-makers in Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89).
Gill also became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England. The skipper also posted the highest individual score by an Indian batter on English soil, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's 221 scored at the Oval in 1979.

President of India Unveils the Trophies of Durand Cup Tournament

President of India, Droupadi Murmu unveiled and flagged off the Trophies of the Durand Cup Tournament 2025 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.
The President said that sports promote discipline, determination and team spirit. Sports have the unique power to connect people, regions and countries.
She appreciated the role of the Armed Forces in keeping alive and promoting the spirit of the Durand Cup.

Inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival to be Held at Srinagar's Iconic Dal Lake in August

The first-ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival will be held at Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake from August 21-23. This was announced by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya.
As part of its growing Khelo India calendar, the inaugural edition of the Water Games in Jammu and Kashmir follows the first Khelo India Beach Games, held in Diu in May. The water sports festival will feature five sports: kayaking and canoeing, rowing, water skiing, a shikara race, and dragon boat racing.

Pakistan Hockey Team Gets the Indian Government's Clearance to Travel for the Men's Asia Cup

Pakistan hockey teams have got the Indian government's clearance to travel for the men's Asia Cup to be held from August 27 to September 7, 2025 and the Junior World Cup in November-December 2025. The men's Asia Cup will be held in Rajgir, Bihar, while the Junior World Cup will be held in Chennai and Madurai.
The 12th edition of the Asia Cup will witness the participation of 8 teams.
Stopping any nation from participating in international tournaments due to border conflicts violates the Olympic charter, and it is not a good representation of India.

Sudhanshu Mittal Re-elected as President of Kho Kho Federation of India

Sudhanshu Mittal was re-elected as President while Upkar Singh Virk was elected as the General Secretary, as the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) officially announced its new Governing Body following the successful conduct of elections at the KKFI headquarters in the national capital.
The elections were overseen by Dr. Kamini Lau, District Judge (Retd.), who was the Returning Officer. Govind Sharma was elected as the Treasurer of the new regime.

The 15th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2025 Starts in Ranchi

The 15th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2025 began on July 3 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The tournament will run until July 14 and will follow the newly-introduced division-based format--first implemented earlier this year during the Senior Men and Women's National Championships.
This year's (2025) edition features 28 teams divided into three divisions--Division A, Division B, and Division C--introducing an added competitive edge with promotion and relegation at stake.

Union Cabinet Clears New National Sports Policy to Boost India's Sporting Ecosystem

The Union Cabinet approved the National Sports Policy on July 1, 2025. The newly approved policy aims to integrate sports into daily life, fuel economic growth, and build a robust, athlete-centric ecosystem. Developed through extensive stakeholder consultation, the policy emphasises excellence, inclusivity, infrastructure accessibility, and community engagement across the country.
The new policy supersedes the existing National Sports Policy, 2001, and lays out a visionary and strategic roadmap to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse and a strong contender for excellence at international sporting events, including the 2036 Olympic Games.
The NSP 2025 is the outcome of extensive consultations involving Central Ministries, NITI Aayog, State Governments, National Sports Federations (NSFs), athletes, domain experts, and public stakeholders.
This policy is anchored on 5 pillars: Excellence on the Global Stage, Sports for Economic Development, Sports for Social Development, Sports as a People's Movement, Integration with Education (NEP 2020).

Railways Clinch Team Title at Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Telangana

Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) emerged as the top-performing unit at the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Telanagana, securing the overall team title with a total of nine medals, including three gold, three silver, and three bronze.
The final day was marked by standout individual performances from World and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas (Haryana), Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain (TOPS), and World Champion Saweety Boora (SAI NCOE), who each secured titles in their respective weight categories.

Hitesh, Sachin Siwach Lead India's Winning Start at World Boxing Cup Kazakhstan 2025

India began its campaign at the World Boxing Cup Kazakhstan 2025 on a promising note with Hitesh Gulia and Sachin Siwach with dominant, unanimous wins in their opening preliminary bouts at the Beeline Arena.
Hitesh, a gold medallist from the Brazil leg, outclassed Olympian Kan Chia-Wei of Chinese Taipei 5:0 in the light middleweight division. Sachin, a bronze winner in Brazil, was equally convincing in his 5:0 win over Canada's Al-Ahmadieh Keoma-Ali in the lightweight category at the Beeline Arena.
In women's competition, Minakshi began her campaign with a clean 5:0 win over Australia's Madeleine Bowen in the light flyweight division, while Muskan edged England's Kerry Davis in a closely contested 3:2 decision in the middleweight category.
The Kazakhstan leg will run until July 7, with over 400 boxers from 31 countries, including Olympians, contesting across 10 weight categories in both men's and women's divisions. India has fielded a 20-member team.

Smriti Mandhana Becomes India's First All-Format Centurion in Women's Cricket

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana made history, as she became the first-ever women's cricketer from the country to slam centuries in all formats of international cricket.
Mandhana reached this feat during her side's first T20I of five matches against England at Nottingham. During the game, the left-handed opener smashed 112 in just 62 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 180.65.
Overall, across the world, only five players have achieved this massive accomplishment of being an all-format centurion in women's cricket, with England's Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt and Australia's Beth Mooney being others besides Mandhana.

Ayush Shetty Wins US Open

Ayush Shetty clinched his maiden title on the BWF World Tour defeating Canada's Brian Yang 21-18, 21-13 in the US Open final at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
However, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma went down 21-11, 16-21, 21-10 to top seed and home favourite Beiwen Zhang in the women's final.
Ayush, currently ranked 34th in the world, became the first Indian shuttler to win a title this season. He also ended the nation's wait for a men's singles title away from home since Lakshya Sen's triumph at the Canada Open in 2023.

Praggnanandhaa Wins UzChess Cup

Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa clinched the UzChess Cup Masters 2025 title in Tashkent, marking his third major classical tournament victory this year. The win propelled him to a live rating of 2778.3, making him World No. 4 and India's top-ranked player, ahead of fellow Grandmasters D. Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi.
