IIT Madras and ISRO Develop SHAKTI-based Semiconductor Chip under Make in India

  • India is swiftly achieving excellence in the technologies of future. With the successful development of indigenous semiconductor chips in aerospace applications, India is now standing at the forefront. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) joined hands in the development of the chip.
  • The chip, named IRIS (Indigenous RISC-V Controller for Space Applications), is based on the SHAKTI microprocessor and is part of India's push for self-reliance in semiconductor technology.
  • The SHAKTI microprocessor project is led by Professor V. Kamakoti at the Prathap Subrahmanyam Centre for Digital Intelligence and Secure Hardware Architecture (PSCDISHA), Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras.

Largest Structure in Universe, 13,000 Times the Length of Milky Way Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered what they are calling the largest-known structure in the universe. Named 'Quipu' after an Incan measuring system, the superstructure spans an astonishing 1.3 billion light-years across which is over 13,000 times the length of the Milky Way.
  • The current contender for the biggest structure in the universe is the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall which is located 10 billion light-years from Earth and spans 10 billion light-years across but its existence remains disputed.

ISRO Unveils FEAST 2025 Software at IIT Hyderabad

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has introduced the latest version of its structural analysis software, Finite Element Analysis of Structures (FEAST) 2025, at the 8th National Finite Element Developers'/FEAST Users' Meet (NAFED08) held at IIT Hyderabad. The event, organised in collaboration with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), brought together over 250 experts from academia, industry, and research institutions to discuss advancements in finite element-based structural analysis.
  • FEAST plays a key role in ISRO's high-profile space missions. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan highlighted in his address that the software has been used in structural design analysis for projects such as Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Mission, Bharatiya Antariksh Station, and Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV).
