Taiwan's Legislature Passes New Bill Reducing President's Authority

Taiwan lawmakers passed legislation that could curb the authority of President Lai Ching-te, as thousands of protesters gathered outside Parliament to oppose the changes.
The controversial measure became law following a day of raucous debates and scuffles between Lai's ruling Democratic Progressive Party and opposition groups.
The legislative changes backed by the Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party expand lawmakers' ability to summon the president, companies and even the general public for questioning. It also gives them access to confidential documents.

Lithuania's President Gitanas Naus�-da Secures Landslide Re-election Victory

With preliminary results indicating Naus�-da's commanding lead with 74.5% of the votes, his re-election underscores broad support for his moderate conservative stance and unwavering advocacy for Ukraine.
Throughout his tenure, President Naus�-da remained a stalwart advocate for Ukraine, a stance echoed across Lithuania's political spectrum. Amid regional tensions and authoritarian crackdowns in neighbouring Belarus and Russia, Naus�-da's administration has provided refuge to those fleeing oppression, emphasising the importance of safeguarding Lithuania's independence and freedom.

Haiti: Former PM Garry Conille Appointed to Lead Transitional Government

To stabilise Haiti amid ongoing turmoil, the Transitional Presidential Council appointed former Prime Minister Garry Conille to lead the government during the transition period.
The Transitional Council is now mandated to hold elections by February 7, 2026, as per Haiti's Constitution. The council's decision to install Conille as interim Prime Minister came after a 6-1 vote.

Saudi Arabia Names Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as Ambassador to Syria

Saudi Arabia's appointment of Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as its ambassador to Syria signifies a significant shift in bilateral relations, marking the first such appointment in over a decade. This move came amidst a period of thawing relations between the two nations following years of estrangement sparked by the Syrian civil war.
The rift between Saudi Arabia and Syria emerged in 2011 amid the Syrian civil war, with Saudi Arabia backing rebel groups opposed to the Assad regime. Diplomatic ties were severed in 2012, leading to the closure of Saudi Arabia's embassy in Damascus.
The process of reconciliation began in May 2023 when Syria was readmitted to the Arab League, setting the stage for renewed engagement between Saudi Arabia and Syria. Following Syria's readmission, Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Damascus, signaling a desire for normalized relations.

Spain Pledges 1 Billion in Military Aid to Ukraine, Signs Bilateral Defence Deal

Spain pledged to provide military aid to Ukraine worth 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in 2024 under a security deal signed between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid.
It will allow Ukraine to boost its capabilities including its essential air defence systems to protect its civilians, cities and infrastructure which are still suffering indiscriminate attacks as seen this weekend in Kharkiv.
Sanchez stated that Spain had already vowed to provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles, however, what Zelensky needed from Ukraine's allies was the systems to launch these missiles.

South Korea, China, Japan Leaders Meet for First Summit in Nearly Five Years

South Korean, Chinese and Japanese leaders met in Seoul on Monday (May 27) for their first trilateral summit in nearly five years, after nuclear-armed North Korea announced plans to put another satellite into orbit.
There are low expectations of any major breakthroughs at the meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, but the leaders have expressed hopes it could help revitalise three-way diplomacy.

G7 Commits to Net Zero Emissions by 2050

The leaders of the G7 have recently kept their word to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Along the same lines, the government of Albanese has put forward a plan to create a Net Zero Economy Authority in order to encourage more investment in green technologies. Following the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, which tried to keep global warming below 1.5°C as required by the Paris Agreement, there has been a rise in net zero commitments.
Net zero means balancing the amount of greenhouse gases released with the same amount stored or offset so that the temperature has no effect at all. This idea came about when people realised that cutting down on emissions alone is not enough to stop climate change.

Rare Indian Banknotes from 1918 Shipwreck to be Auctioned in London

A pair of rare 10-rupee banknotes that were recovered as they floated away from a shipwreck on their way from Bombay to London in 1918 are to be auctioned next Wednesday.
Noonans Mayfair auction house in London will offer the notes as part of their World Banknotes sale and are estimated to fetch between GBP 2,000 and 2,600. The two 10-rupee banknotes were recovered from the wreck of the SS Shirala, which was sunk by a German U-boat on July 2, 1918, and bear the date of 25 May 1918 on them.
