Dip in Emissions from Firecrackers

  • The level of emissions from fireworks fell by around 40 per cent during Diwali festivities this time as compared to 2016.
  • The SAFAR (a central government air quality monitoring agency) study concluded that, as a whole, the Diwali period (October 18-22) was the cleanest since 2014. Level of particulates did shoot up a day after Diwali, but the dispersion was quicker and air quality attained the pre-Diwali level within three days.

Peatland Plants Adapting Well to Climate Change

  • Peatland plants account for just three per cent of the Earth’s surface but play a major role in offsetting carbon dioxide emissions.
  • A team of scientists has discovered that the plants that make up peat bogs adapt exceptionally well to climate change.
  • As per experts, even though certain species in a peat bog’s plant ‘community’ might disappear because of the effect of rising temperatures and increasing levels of atmospheric sulphur and nitrogen, their place will be taken by other species with different environmental preferences but a similar biological ‘function’.

Ocean Acidification

  • According to a new research, ocean acidification is progressing rapidly around the world and its combination with the other threats to marine life is proving deadly. Many organisms that could withstand a certain amount of acidification are at risk of losing this adaptive ability owing to pollution from plastics, and the extra stress from global warming.

Change in Shallow Reef Ecosystems

  • A new study based on the first global survey of marine life predicts that as the oceans warm fish -- which appear to be superior predators in warm water -- will extend their ranges away from the equator and cause a decline in the diversity of invertebrates such as crabs, lobsters, sea urchins and whelks.
  • The effects of climate change on marine life vary greatly between geographic regions.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas

  • According to a study, India can offset close to 520 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year through reforestation alone.
  • As per the study, released by The Nature Conservancy, merely by conservation of nature, and reforestation, about 37 percent of global greenhouse gas emission could be reduced by 2030.
  • India ranks fifth in greenhouse gas emissions.
