Increasing Earth's Green Cover

  •  According to a Boston University report prepared from data received from NASA satellites, India and China have led the way in increasing Earth's green cover, the two countries are ahead of others in increasing the green cover.
  • As per the study, the Earth's green cover is more at present than what it was 20 years back. A bulk of the credit goes to India and China where tree-planting exercises, as well as intensive agriculture, has helped the cause.
  • The two Asian countries are followed by European Union, Canada, Russia, Australia, the United States and Mexico which are above the global average of in changes in lead areas between 2000 and 2017.

One of UK's Last Coal Power Stations to Close

  •  One of the UK's last seven coal power stations will close this year after half a century of generating electricity, as the polluting fuel continues its rapid decline in the energy mix.
  • More than 150 jobs were likely to be cut due to the closure of the Cottam plant in north Nottinghamshire on 30 September.
  • Cottam has been hit by the costs of working to European environmental standards and the failure to secure a contract for payments supply backup power after September.
  • The UK government has pledged to end coal power generation in the UK by 2025 to meet its climate change commitments.

World Heading for Warmest Decade

  •  According to scientists, the world is in the middle of what is likely to be the warmest 10 years since records began in 1850.
  • The Met Office is forecasting that temperatures for each of the next five years are likely to be 1oC or more above pre-industrial levels.
  • In the next five years there's also a chance we'll see a year in which the average global temperature rise could be greater than 1.5oC.
  • That's seen as a critical threshold for climate change.
  • If the data matches the forecast, then the decade from 2014-2023 will be the warmest in more than 150 years of record keeping.

Ganga Flow May Rise Then Fall Abruptly

  •  Climate change will begin altering water levels in the Ganga and the Brahmaputra in the next three decades, and after 2050, the Rivers could record an abrupt decrease in flow, according to a study on the Hindu Kush and Himalayan (HKH) region that predicts disruptions which could jeopardise agriculture and access to drinking water.
  • The findings are part of the report from Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), which includes 210 authors who studied the ecology of the Hindu Kush and Himalayan region.
  • The report released predicts that a third of glaciers in the HKH region will thaw if average global temperatures rise by 1.5°C.
  • For the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus, the report adds that water flow will gradually rise till 2050 before they start to plummet.
  • This, the assessment adds, will consequently diminish the water available for drinking, irrigating farms, and producing electricity for roughly 250 million people living downstream.

Dinosaur Found in Patagonia

  •  A herbivorous dinosaur that fended off predators with a row of spines running along its back and lived 140 million years ago has been found in Argentine Patagonia.
  • The discovery of the new species of dicraeosauridae, christened Bajadasaurus pronuspinax, was revealed in Scientific Reports.
  • A reproduction of its spiny neck was exhibited in the Cultural Science Center in Buenos Aires.
  • Bajadasaurus was a quadruped and part of the wider Sauropod family that lived from the late Triassic period (around 230 million years ago) until the end of the late Cretaceous (70 million years ago).

Two-thirds of Himalayan Ice Cap May Melt

  •  According to a major new study, scientists have warned that two-thirds of Himalayan glaciers, the world's "Third Pole", could melt by 2100 if global emissions are not reduced.
  • According to the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment, even if the most ambitious Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5° C is achieved, one-third of the glaciers would go.
  • The glaciers feed 10 of the world's most important river systems, including the Ganges, Indus, Yellow, Mekong and Irrawaddy, and directly or indirectly supply billions of people with food, energy, clean air and income.
