UNDP, NITI Aayog Host Virtual Event for Mission LiFE

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the NITI Aayog hosted a hackathon with young people from across the world to contribute ideas and innovations to promote sustainable living and climate positive behaviour as part of the Government of India's Mission LiFE.
  • The Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) campaign aims to bring individual action to the forefront of climate action and these nudges are as small as encouraging individuals to consume less plastic, waste-less food, and prefer public transport, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said.
  • Mission LiFE was launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Gujarat in 2022.

World's Largest Ice Rink Stays Shut for First Time Due to Mild Canada Winter

  • Canada's renowned Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's largest natural ice skating rink, will not open this season for the first time due to a lack of ice, its operator said, blaming the closure on climate change.
  • The 7.8 km (4.9 mile) Rideau Canal Skateway, first opened over 50 years ago, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada's capital city Ottawa that is a top attraction for skating enthusiasts seeking outdoor thrills during Canada's usually biting cold winters.
  • The National Capital Commission (NCC), which maintains and operates the Skateway has previously said that it can only open when the ice is at least 12 inches (30 cm) thick, for which there must be 10 to 14 consecutive days of temperatures between -20 Celsius and -10 Celsius.

India Calls for Greater Cooperation with France in Clean Energy Field

  • India called for greater cooperation with France in the field of clean energy and highlighted Delhi's plans for green transitioning to EVs and hydrogen energy.
  • The Indian renewable sector ranks fourth on the list of the world's most attractive renewable energy sectors and solar energy is the most abundant source of renewable power in the country.
  • Ministry of Science and Technology, Secretary, S. Chandrasekhar said that the government in 2022 had set a target of installing 100 GW of solar energy.
  • He said that using the Thar Desert as a site for solar power generation, the country is estimated to generate up to 2,100 GW of solar energy.

Winds Lash Madagascar's Coast as Cyclone Freddy Makes Landfall

  • Tropical cyclone Freddy battered Madagascar's east coast, with heavy rain and powerful winds tearing roofs off houses and triggering a storm surge.
  • Cyclone Freddy made landfall, weeks after another tropical storm killed 33 and left thousands without shelter.
  • The Indian Ocean island nation is particularly vulnerable to cyclones. It is hit by an average of 1.5 cyclones every year, the highest rate in Africa, according to the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Nine Indian States among 50 most Vulnerable Regions Due to Climate Change

  • Nine Indian states were among the top 50 regions in the world with the highest risk of damage due to climate change. These are - Punjab, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala and Gujarat.
  • According to the 2023 Gross Domestic Climate Risk report released by Cross Dependency Initiative (XDI), Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Assam had the highest Aggregated Damage Ratio (ADR).
  • Asia dominated the list with 114 among the top 200 regions falling here. China had the highest number of regions, followed by India and the United States of America (USA).
  • Notably, nine out of the top 10 and 14 out of the top 15 most vulnerable cities were from China.
  • Bihar, India's most vulnerable state was at 22nd rank globally. Uttar Pradesh followed it at 25th and Assam at 28th.
