India-Spain Declare 2026 as 'Dual Year' for Culture, Tourism, and AI

  • Efforts will be made to boost tourism by promoting reciprocal visits, establishing direct flight connections, and highlighting each other's tourist attractions. This includes joint marketing campaigns and tourism fairs to attract visitors.
  • Recognising the transformative potential of AI, both nations intend to collaborate on AI research, development, and implementation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and industry. This will involve joint workshops, seminars, and the establishment of AI research centres.

NPCI and Magnati Partner to Boost UPI Use in UAE

  • NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL), the international arm of India's National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has partnered with UAE-based fintech firm Magnati to enable Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions for Indian travelers in the UAE. This collaboration aims to integrate UPI into the UAE's payment ecosystem, allowing Indian visitors to use their preferred payment method seamlessly.

Hindenburg Research Shuts Down

ICJ President Nawaf Salam is Lebanon's New Prime Minister

  • Nawaf Salam, the president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, was named as Lebanon's new Prime Minister.
  • Two-thirds of the 128 members of parliament nominated the 71-year-old judge for the post - reserved for a Sunni Muslim under a sectarian power sharing system - during consultations with newly elected President Joseph Aoun. Caretaker PM Najib Mikati got 9 votes.
  • His appointment is another blow to Hezbollah, which had sought to reappoint Mikati but ended up nominating no candidate.
  • Salman became a member of the ICJ - the UN's top court - in 2018, and was elected president for a three-year term last February. He took over as the ICJ heard a case brought by South Africa that accused Israeli forces of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel dismissed the allegation as baseless.

Japan Tightens Sanctions on Russia over Ukraine War

  • In a decisive move to reinforce international pressure on Russia over its continued military actions in Ukraine, Japan announced a new series of sanctions targeting Russian entities and individuals, as well as organisations in other countries accused of aiding Russia in evading existing sanctions.
  • The Japanese government froze the assets of 11 individuals, 29 organizations, and three banks within Russia. Additionally, a North Korean trading company executive and a Georgian bank, both allegedly involved in circumventing sanctions, have been subjected to asset freezes.
  • This latest round of sanctions underscores Japan's commitment to the collective efforts of the Group of Seven (G7) nations in responding to Russia's actions in Ukraine. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasised that these measures represent Japan's contribution to international endeavors aimed at achieving global peace and resolving the challenges arising from the Russian invasion.

Croatian President Re-elected

  • Voters in Croatia re-elected Zoran Milanovic to a second term, after he won almost three-quarters of votes cast in the country's presidential election.
  • It was a dismal result for his opponent Dragan Primorac, who had the backing of the governing centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.
  • Primorac picked up 25 per cent of the vote – the worst-ever result for Croatia's most powerful political force.
  • The outcome was met with a muted response from Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

S. Jaishankar to Attend Donald Trump's Swearing-In Ceremony

  • On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-In Ceremony, on January 20, of President-Elect Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America.
  • During his visit to the US, Jaishankar will also meet representatives of the incoming Trump administration and other dignitaries.
  • Trump will be sworn in a ceremony administered by the US Supreme Court Chief Justice in front of the Capitol building.

India Joins UN's Big Data for Official Statistics Committee

  • India joined the United Nations Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD), marking a significant step in the country's growing influence in global statistical frameworks. This membership demonstrates India's commitment to leveraging Big Data and technology for evidence-based policymaking. The committee focuses on exploring how Big Data and data science can be utilised to improve official statistics and track sustainable development goals (SDGs).
  • This development aligns with India's efforts to modernise its statistical processes by integrating non-traditional data sources like satellite imagery, IoT (Internet of Things), and machine learning for accurate and real-time insights to support governance.
