Trump Declared English as the Official Language of the United States

  • US President Donald Trump made an official announcement designating English as the national language of America to promote unity among the immigrant population. Through an executive order issued, Trump expressed that it was long past time for US to take English as its official language.
  • A memo from Trump reversed a policy implemented by Bill Clinton during his presidency, which provided support for non-English speakers through government agencies. Under the new order, agencies can establish their own guidelines for delivering multilingual assistance.

Christian Stocker Sworn in as Austrian Chancellor

  • Conservative Christian Stocker was sworn in as Austria's chancellor at the head of a three-party coalition government, ending five months of political deadlock that followed a far-right party's election win.
  • The swearing-in came days after a common programme was agreed by his Austrian People's Party (OVP), the centre-left Social Democrats and the liberal Neos.
  • The new administration faces significant challenges, including rising unemployment, a recession and a strained budget. Its coalition agreement includes plans for stricter asylum rules in the European Union nation of nine million people.

  • A new international fund 'The Cali Fund' was created to help protect biodiversity.
  • The Cali Fund will receive money from businesses that rely on Digital Sequence Information (DSI). DSI includes genetic data from plants, animals, and microorganisms. Industries like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, and biotechnology use DSI to develop products.
