'Mahatma Gandhi Green Triangle' Unveiled In Madagascar

  • Mahatma Gandhi Green Triangle' was unveiled in Madagascar to mark Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Ambassador of India to Madagascar, Abhay Kumar celebrated the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav by inaugurating a Green Triangle, along with Mayor of Antananarivo Naina Andriantsitohaina. The word green in the plaque signifies their commitment to sustainable development and saving the environment. The naming of this park as Mahatma Gandhi Green Triangle is an apt tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
  • While addressing the ceremony, the Ambassador of India said that the Government of India has launched an initiative: Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India. The event was attended by members of local government, diplomatic corps, heads of international organisations, and members of the Indian Diaspora in Madagascar.

Bangladesh Top in South Asia in Terms of Women on Board of Listed Companies

  • Bangladesh topped the list in South Asia in terms of women on board of listed companies, said a study conducted by International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). According to the latest figures, there was an increase in the percentage of women who are independent directors on listed companies from five per cent in 2020 to six per cent, despite the impact of COVID-19, which has disproportionately affected women, said a press release issued by the IFC.
  • The findings were revealed at an event marking International Women's Day. The IFC, DSE, UN Women, and United Nations Global Compact organised the programme. The IFC has partnered with the DSE, UN Women, and United Nations Global Compact for the seventh consecutive year to "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality".

Eiffel Tower Grows 20 Feet Taller

  • The Eiffel Tower grew by six metres when vertigo-defying engineers fitted a new radio antenna on top of the Paris monument with the aid of a helicopter. The tallest building in Paris, known affectionately as the 'Iron Lady', measures 330 metres in height after the new addition. The new antenna would be used to transmit digital radio for the capital region.
  • It was inaugurated on March 31, 1889.

Russia Withdraws from Council of Europe

  • Russia, facing global condemnation for its invasion of Ukraine, is withdrawing from the Council of Europe (CoE), the country's ministry of foreign affairs announced. "We are launching the procedure to exit the CoE, and have given notification of our departure to Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric".
  • The Council of Europe was founded in the wake of the Second World War to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the continent. Established in 1949, it operates on an annual budget of around 500 million euros. The CoE is headquartered at the Palace of Europe, in Strasbourg, France.

  • Just a year ago, Naftali Bennett was struggling for his political survival as Israel headed toward its fourth consecutive election.
  • Today, the Israeli Prime Minister is at the forefront of global efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
  • Just as Bennett took advantage of unique circumstances to become the most unlikely of Prime Ministers, he has managed to leverage Israel's good relations with both Ukraine and Russia and his personal rapport with their leaders to turn himself into an unexpected mediator.
  • Although he has not yet delivered any major diplomatic breakthroughs, he is one of the few world leaders to speak regularly to both sides, providing a rare glimmer of hope for ending the 3-week-old war.

ICJ Orders Russia to Cease Hostilities in Ukraine

  • The United Nations' highest court ordered Russia to stop hostilities in Ukraine, granting measures requested by Kyiv although many are sceptical that Russia will comply.
  • Two weeks ago, Ukraine asked the International Court of Justice - also known as the World Court - to intervene, arguing Russia violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by falsely accusing Ukraine of committing genocide and using that as a pretext for the ongoing invasion.
  • Countries who refuse to abide by court orders can be referred to the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds veto power.
  • The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG), or Genocide Convention, is an international treaty that criminalizes genocide and obligates state parties to enforce its prohibition. It was the first legal instrument to codify genocide as a crime, and the first human rights treaty unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, on 9 December 1948, during the third session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Convention entered into force on 12 January 1951 and has 152 state parties as of 2021.

Vladimir Putin Slaps Sanctions on Biden, Blinken

  • Russia put US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other top officials on a "stop list" that bars them from entering the country.
  • Their names, together with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA chief William Burns, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and others, were included on a list of 13 individuals banned from Russia in response to sanctions imposed by Washington on Russian officials. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also named.
