India Participates at the 6th East Asia Summit Education Minister's Meeting inVietnam

India participated at the 6th East Asia Summit Education Minister's Meeting held in Hanoi, Vietnam. Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) Ministry of Education Ms. Neeta Prasad virtually addressed the gathering and informed about the key initiatives of National Education Policy 2020 and India's collaborative efforts in education and research with partner countries.
Addressing the meeting, Ms. Neeta Prasad said that NEP - 2020 encourages a holistic, flexible and multidisciplinary approach to education as envisioned by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said, it is based on foundational pillars of access, equality, quality, affordability and accountability, and is aligned with SDG 2030 goals.
Ms. Prasad underlined that NEP-2020 focuses on the internationalization of education and building collaborations with other countries. She added that India greatly values educational cooperation with partner countries. Ms. Prasad emphasised India's commitment to working with EAS member countries.

India Slips to 107th Place in Global Hunger Index 2022

India ranked 107 out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2022 with its child wasting rate at 19.3 per cent, being the highest in the world.
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool for comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national levels.
With a score of 29.1, the level of hunger in India was labelled "serious".
In Asia, Afghanistan with a rank of 109 was the only country behind India.
Neighbouring countries - Pakistan (99), Bangladesh (84), Nepal (81) and Sri Lanka (64) have all fared better than India.
In 2021, India ranked 101 out of 116 countries while in 2020 the country was placed at 94th position.
South Asia, the region with the world's highest hunger level, has the highest child stunting rate and by far the highest child wasting rate in the world.

UK PM Liz Truss Appoints Jeremy Hunt to Replace Sacked Chancellor Kwarteng

Embattled British Prime Minister Liz Truss appointed former Cabinet minister and party leadership contender Jeremy Hunt as her new Chancellor, after she sacked close friend Kwasi Kwarteng in an effort to stem the economic turmoil unleashed by his mini-budget.
The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP has been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Hunt was himself in the race for the top job after Boris Johnson resigned in July, but threw his weight behind former Chancellor Rishi Sunak after he did not get enough Conservative Party members backing him in the leadership election. His appointment is seen as Truss' attempt at closing the widening divide within the Tories, with many of Sunak loyalists in open rebellion against her policies.

India to host 90th General Assembly of INTERPOL from 18 to 21 Oct

India is hosting the 90th General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol from 18th to 21st of October in New Delhi.
The General Assembly is Interpol's supreme governing body, comprising representatives from each of 195 member countries. It meets once a year.
India is one of the oldest members of Interpol and joined the organization in 1949. All member countries of Interpol have agreed to ensure and promote the widest possible assistance between all criminal police authorities in the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes.
The role of Interpol is to enable police around the world to work together to make the world a safer place.

Abdul Latif Rashid Iraq's New President

Iraqi lawmakers elected Abdul Latif Rashid as the new President of Iraq, marking a crucial step toward forming a new government for the country.
As per reports, Rashid received 162 votes in the second round of voting, defeating Barham Salih who gained 99 votes, while eight votes were considered invalid.
In the first round of voting, none of the 39 presidential candidates garnered two-thirds of the votes of the total 329 parliament members, but Rashid got 156 votes and Salih came in second with 99 votes.
According to the Iraqi Constitution, the President-elect needs to gather at least two-thirds of the votes of the 329 parliament members. Failing that, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will compete with each other in a second round, and the one receiving the majority of votes will be declared the President of Iraq.
The newly-elected Rashid was later sworn in as the President of Iraq, the fifth President of the country since 2003.

U.N. Demands Russia to Reverse Ukraine Annexations

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn Russia's "attempted illegal annexation" of four Ukrainian regions and demand that Moscow immediately reverse its actions.
The vote in the 193-member world body was 143-5 with 35 abstentions, a sign of strong global opposition to the seven-month war and Moscow's attempt to grab its neighbour's territory.
It was the strongest support from the General Assembly for Ukraine and against Russia of the four resolutions it has approved since Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Aparajita Sarangi Elected Asia Pacific Group's Inter-Parliamentary Union Panel Member

Lok Sabha MP from Odisha Aparajita Sarangi was elected as a member of the executive committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from Asia Pacific Group (APG) countries.
Sarangi bagged 12 out of the total 18 available votes in the election to the post. The election was held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Sarangi thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nominating her for the post.
Sarangi would represent India on the 15-member executive committee of the union.

Vladimir Putin Suggests Turning Turkey into Gas Hub for Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down on his proposal to turn Turkey into a gas hub for Europe after deliveries to Germany through the Baltic Sea's Nord Stream pipeline were halted.
Putin floated the idea of exporting more gas through the Turk Stream gas pipeline running beneath the Black Sea to Turkey as he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a regional summit in Kazakhstan.
It's the second unlikely energy proposal that Putin has pitched in as many days, with European leaders calling Russia's cuts in natural gas a political bid to divide them over their support for Ukraine.

The US and Mexico Make Deal to Ease Venezuela Migration

The US and Mexico agreed to a plan that allows some Venezuelan migrants to enter the US - but those who arrive illegally will be sent back to Mexico.
It is hoped the deal would ease pressure at the US-Mexico border, where a steady flow of Venezuelans continues to arrive as they flee the crisis-hit nation.
Starting immediately, flights would be arranged for 24,000 migrants to arrive in the United States.
More than six million people have left Venezuela in the past five years.
The exodus is one of the largest migrations in the world, fuelled by violence, food, fuel and medicine shortages, and repression by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
It has seen people desperate to improve their lives walking thousands of miles along dangerous routes to try to reach the US-Mexico border, where they then try to enter illegally or claim asylum.

Venezuela, South Korea, Afghanistan Lose Vote for UN Rights Body

Venezuela, South Korea and Afghanistan lost contested races for seats on the top UN human rights body by the General Assembly, which faced criticism for electing countries like Vietnam and Sudan, which have been accused of having abysmal human rights records.
The 193-member assembly voted by secret ballot to fill 14 seats on the 47-member Human Rights Council. Seats are allocated to regions to ensure geographical representation, a rule that has regularly led to many regions putting forward uncontested slates as Africa, Eastern Europe and Western nations did this year.
In this year's election, the most hotly watched race was in the Latin America and Caribbean regional group, where Chile, Costa Rica and Venezuela were vying for two seats. The result saw Chile get 144 votes, Costa Rica 134 and Venezuela 88.
The other closely watched race was in the Asia-Pacific region, where Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, South Korea and Vietnam contested four seats. Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives and Vietnam were declared the winners.

India up Six Places for Reducing Inequality, Ranks 123 Globally: CRII

India moved up six places to rank 123 out of 161 countries for reducing inequality but continues to be among the lowest performers in health spending, according to the latest Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII).
The 2022 CRII looked at government policies and actions in 161 countries to fight inequality during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Norway leads the CRII followed by Germany and Australia.
